Skunks are very confident about their defenses and do not use their spray aggressively at all. They generally only spray when they genuinely feel that they must defend themselves. For one thing their scent glands only contain so much of the stuff and it takes them a while to generate more, so they don't want to deplete their ammo unnecessarily. I once walked side by side down a dirt road at night for some distance with a skunk.

There's a video on here somewhere about a mountain biker who encountered a momma skunk with 4 or 5 of her baby skunks. He stopped and stood still as they came running towards him, they were at his feet, sniffing around his shoe making whatever sounds a skunk makes when it's curious about something, funny that they didn't spray him or anything, they walked away from him.

However, their weaponry is very different, the defense mechanism that porcupines have is sharp quills that are actually modified hair, we see this feature in some rodents, however, porcupines are the only spiny rodents that have barbed quills, which can detach and can almost be difficult to remove from skin, the defense mechanism that skunks and other mephitids have is their anal musk glands, anal musk glands are a very common feature that carnivorans have, however, some anal musk glands of carnivorans have evolved to be used for defense.

I had a skunk get into the garage, and kill 3 young cats. I heard a yowl, then a commotion on the last one, and managed to shoot the skunk. It was deformed, with some kind of growth or tumor on it’s face and head. Probably had a hard time getting wild food, which is why it started eating the cats. Either that, or it was just some kind of Frankenskunk who had a taste for feline!

@@emarie4053 Standard home remedies would probably include tomato products, baking soda and maybe hydrogen peroxide. There is a product sold at pet stores and online called 'Nature's Miracle,' which actually breaks down enzymes that would probably work. It's normally used for feces and urine, so that with the enzyme breakdown, the pet is not supposed to come back to the spot, which is normal for other home products which may destroy the odor, but leave the enzymes.
