NYC Apartment Fire: Bronx Blaze Kills 19 as Survivors Tell Harrowing Tales | NBC New York

  • 19 are dead, including 9 kids, after one of the worst New York City fires in a generation.
    An electric space heater is being blamed for sparking the horrific high-rise Bronx apartment fire, city officials confirmed Sunday evening.
    The fire originated in a duplex on the second and third floors of the building but never extended past the unit and the hallway nearest the apartment, FDNY Commissioner Dan Nigro revealed. Smoke generated from the duplex blaze was able to filter out through an open door and spread throughout the structure.
    Marc Santia, Adam Harding and Ida Siegal report.

      For the many high rise fires , I wonder how come none have done fire safety drills. Or put a slide shoot on the side of the buildings for reasons of tenants to escape situations like this😥😭💔

      Are there any clips on youtube of the inside of buildings like this , im fascinated now to see the difference between UK and US High Rise apts , I think if you know and have been in one you can get a grasp of how this could have happened , it just shows how much trust we have to have in people who design buildings and the companies who make them , we don't know how many corners are cut , I dont live in a high rise but it makes me question my home tbh. High rises do not come with fire escapes they only come with Balconies or a Terrace and in this case this is not considered a luxury unit so they have neither. But the building was built with more than one staircase in an event where someone needed to escape a fire. And the building also has brick interior which is non flammable so the fire is less likely to spread fast. But in this situation it was the smoke that did the damage because the occupant of where the fire started left the door ajar leaving the smoke to spread thru out the building.

    That’s so scary cause that’s close to me and the cause was a space heater. I literally just turned mines off. It’s 28 out side feeling like 16 and when you live in the projects the heat barely work. It’s just so sad RIP.

      Just don’t leave it on while you sleep and if you’re not home.

    People, please stop dismantle or remove batteries from the smoke and monoxide detectors. As a property manager, renters often take out the batteries or completely off the wall because they beep especially when cooking and people make a lot of smoke.

    • @bogardorbully
      @bogardorbully 2 года назад +1

      The smoke detector was working, the tenants called 911 as soon as rhe alarms went off. The main reason the fire and smoke spreaded is because the apartment door was left open.. It Gave the fire oxygen by leaving the door open.

    So horrible!! Yet, thank goodness for the FDNY!!!!! I know they did their best!! They pulled me out of a similar situation 3 yrs ago, and I had literally few minutes left when they came through my door in PITCH BLACK smoke and the fireman took off his mask to give me oxygen!!!!! I was about to go down at that moment before he gave me oxygen!! FDNY are indeed, New Yorks Bravest!!!

      they tried their best in this and they will hurt knowing it was too late.
      Here in the UK we have kids phoning the fire service as a false alarm , then when they arrive these kids then throw stones at them , can you believe there are humans that would do something like that when they face danger everynight just like the guys in this tragedy , they dont earn enough money imo, I bet the numbers would have been higher if we didn't have them
