The Audi TT RS is so good we had to give it another go

  • Yeah, we drove it already... but we needed to give it another go. The 2018 Audi TT RS is worth the extra time, because it's just so damn good now.
    Audi is offering up a 400-horsepower sports coupe that's basically a budget R8. It's not cheap, but compared to the competition it's well priced. Plus you can leave the carbon ceramic front brakes and RS suspension off your shopping list and save a healthy $6,000 to keep it all under $80k.
    The Audi TT RS might just be the pinnacle of the MQB platform. It's crazy fast, supremely confidence inspiring, and well styled. Unless you have to have those RWD tail-out shenanigans, the TT RS is the best choice in its segment.

    OMG. Finally someone tells me if a baby seat can fit in the back of this thing. Someone needs to document this for all the future dads of the worlds trying to convince their wives/gf that it's a good family car.

      If it has a back seat, I always get that car seat back there. Sometimes that means a bit of sacrifice for the front seat passenger though...

    Mate, I don’t watch any US review channels as a rule of thumb. I’ve done the “one take” thing et al, but I just don’t feel there is continuity to UK viewers. You’re very emotive and as soon as you paid homage to “Spinal Tap”. That pushed me over the subscribe cliff. Good effort mate, keep up the reviews similar to this and you’ll own so much more UK viewers - like a BOSS!!!

      wtf man, are you kidding me? first off, this reviewer has no idea what he´s talking about. ALL RS cars are understeering shopping devices. EVERY serious test in Germany revealed that. just look at the Nordschleife lap of the highly respectable German magazine Sport Auto here on RUclips. It´s ridiculus to say that. New RS5 is only good at acceleration, the rest of the car is soft, unprecise and overall just boring...Audi Sport is a mess! The M2 is in a different league when it comes to driving dynamics! Of course, if all you want is watch a video about a car and liste to the nice sounds it makes you won´t care about that. For everyone else, please don´t buy the Audi Sport hype! And yes, I know what I´m talking about, I´m an engineer and I´ve worked for AMG as an intern several times during college and also as a road tester for a Germany sportscar magazine!

    • @TheRecon4
      @TheRecon4 7 лет назад +15

      It understeers at the limit, which isn't that crazy considering it's all wheel drive. With the fixed dampers and carbon ceramic brakes these cars are way more buttoned down and amazing to drive when kept within their limits (those limits being higher than that poorly built M2). When the M2 works it's definitely a great drivers car, but the rear diff issues people are having combined with the fact that the engine lacks soul and tunability make it unappealing to some. Speaking of soft and a mess BMW's M division is producing crap as well just look at the new M3 it's dynamically flawed unless you have the competition package. Even a Cadillac can out handle a new M3 according to real world testing (so much for being the benchmark sedan). I think it's kind of funny that you tout your degree with your opinion when your degree has no relevancy to actually having driven the car and being a good driver. Brands evolve with time and reviews are simply opinions that can help guide buyers, but at the end of the day you should always drive something before telling the world your 'facts" (opinions). I'm not saying the TTRS is better than the M2 because it can't be for all people especially since it has it's own flaws, but to say that Audi Sport is all hype and that they are making bad cars right now compared to BMW is a little ridiculous.

      @leroyleroni3020 7 лет назад +14

      C6SuperchargesZR1, you need get back to reality. In a real world situation (like daily road driving), Track times are irrelevant. Nordschleife is a simple marketing ploy that's meant to sucker people (like you) you into buying a car. 99% of people who buy these performance cars will never take it to the track or charge through a twisty road and canyon. And most vehicle buyers will never get near the ultimate performance of their vehicle. This video review is a realistic expectation of what most drivers will experience from the TT RS. It's not always about driving like an F1 driver or racing in the city streets like the Monaco Grand Prix. For 99% of the population, the TT RS is more car than they already need. And I will be happily buying one.

    • @evanescent0311
      @evanescent0311 6 лет назад +2

      Ubi k Audi makes nice sporty street cars that perform in cold/wet better, but if you're going to the track AND want the sporty grocery getter, the M3 is still where it's at. Everyone has different needs/wants tho.

    I have a 2012 TTRS. Awesome when it actually runs. So many electronic issues with this car. More than any car I’ve ever owned. The new TTRS does not come in Manual. So it will fall into the same death bed at the GTR. I don’t care how fast it is... it will be boring after a few weeks. How many cars with paddle shifters and no one uses them..... they are a novelty at best.

    Have to say, I love mine. Just ate a Focus RS for breakfast this morning. Best thing is that nobody knows what my little gray beast is, they are befuddled when it rockets away from them. Also the fun one can have with STI's in the wet is pretty sweet.

    • @zTheBigFishz
      @zTheBigFishz 7 лет назад

      No but then I don't track my car. The Audi's brakes seem to be a bit better than my 997.1 C2S's brakes, which is a standard for good steel brakes.

    • @P_M21
      @P_M21 7 лет назад +1

      Jaye Bass Always check for brake pad wear because the sensor that is supposed to warn you doesn't work properly. The sensor that should tell you they are finished is only on one brake pad and the front discs have 8, so most times it will not warn you and you will only notice when your discs will start to warp... (I don't track mine, and don't drive fast on pubblic roads...) so be carefull, Audi will not admit it's the cars problem.

    I wish auto manufacturers would offer all of their options a' la carte. That way consumers could get the options they want without having to purchase a complete package. You know, maybe I want the adaptive cruise control but don't want the lane keep assist or blind spot monitoring that's all included in a $3500 driver assistance package. I'd bet manufacturers would make more money if they offered options individually rather than requiring you to buy a complete package.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 7 лет назад +1

      While I'd like it that way too, automakers spend countless hours and resources devoted to how to increase profit margins on every model they sell. I'd guarantee that the models they have regarding optional extras are there because people will pay it. It also helps streamline dealer orders to prevent 50 different types of one model sitting on dealer lots waiting for that right buyer.

    You are right for those that 20k is not big deal please spend the extra.
    My point was for less than $1k, you upgrade tts to 370hp (rs 400hp) and 383lb-ft (rs 354lb-ft).
    Net, still 30hp less but 16ft-lb more. I argue normal driver would spot difference...on top you got better mileage (proven) and less premium on insurance. Sensation is one thing, maths another one😊
    With a delta at $19/hp and $25/lb-feet, on paper TTS better value for everyday use. If you add in all expensive options on TT you would blow up above numbers and bank account-Drive smart and wisely.

      Still trying to justify your decision, I got the TTRS because the 5 cylinder is the star of the show, plus you are working that 4 cyl harder to get close to the TTRS. I'm glad I got what I wanted plus the resale value will be higher because of exclusivity. If you are happy cool, I never compromise because you only live once @ NO Regrets.Plus the looks the car gets are worth it for that in it self.Just my 2 cents, not hating because the TTS is a nice car.

    Haha so Porsche nickels and dimes by making options a la carte but also unfortunately some companies bundle options and you can't pick only the things you want... cannot please this man! Nice review overall and I like the kid seat ... I have one in the back of my camaro SS 1LE for occasional drives (if wife isn't on passenger seat)

    • @KevinIsFamous
      @KevinIsFamous 7 лет назад +3

      The TTRS has a slight edge over the RS3 maybe just .3 seconds faster, but both cars share mostly the same components as they share a platform. Personally I like the styling and practicality of the RS3 better and its 10 grand cheaper give or take.

    • @TheHooniverse
      @TheHooniverse  7 лет назад +5

      Yep, the edge on the TT is basically related to curb weight and a slightly more focused chassis setup.

      The TTRS is definitely faster from my experience. ^^based on the lighter weight and more sports car vs compact sedan platform.

    Thanks for this. What do you think of the RS3? Same special magic, but in a more practical, very discreet package. For meaningfully less money. It is almost as quick, but more usable on a daily basis. In grey or silver a de badge RS3 would be the ultimate sleeper, speed commuter.

    • @TheHooniverse
      @TheHooniverse  7 лет назад +5

      100%. If it were my money, I usually prefer sports sedans to dedicated coupes. The RS3 is 95% of the TT RS performance wise, and yes way more usable. Big RS3 fan.

      I found there is more headroom in the TTRS. Also love the steering wheel. & O.3 sec faster to 60 . Also easier to load stuff in back with the vertical hatch. With seats folded u can fit a bike in it. Also rear seats ceiling/room not comfortable or high enough in rs3, yes only kids can fit in TTRS but for me was easy decision..

    Agree with most of what you say, with the exception of the gearbox. Yes, when you're pressing on and are calling for at least 20% power it will shift quick - but in manual mode and just driving normally? Nah, it's a laggy PITA and do disappointing, have to say my mk2 RS was better here.

    actually it sadly falls apart on the track especially the brakes (yes even the ceramics) seem to fade really quick! Audi even offers a extra brake cooling system in their performance part line up because they are aware of the brake issues. Also you cant really get it to oversteer even if you try very hard. And even my 2014 Audi S4 will oversteer if i try enough. I think it is just a little bit too easy to drive, i now thats a good thing in the beginning but trust me after 1 or 2 years of owning it, it will become boring since there is no learning curve :/ In a BMW/Merc or even other Audi Models (the ones without haldex) you gotta learn the car to extract the maximum performance which is in my opinion the best thing about driving a fast car!! its like every 18 year old kid is able to drive this car at the limit ^^ which is fine for a TTS but certainly not an RS

    • @ALMX5DP

      On a daily basis, probably. However the dynamics of the Cayman cannot be disputed, and if one were ever to take their sport coupe to the track, things might be a bit more closely matched. If it were my money, I'd be hard pressed not to give my money to Porsche.

    • @MiguelSevilla

      Ummm..hate to break it to you, but it’s not quicker than a similar year 911 Carrera S:
      www.zeroto60times.com/vehicle-make/porsche-0-60-mph-times/new-old/ (2017 Carrera S, 3.1s 0-60, 11.4 1/4 mile)
      www.zeroto60times.com/vehicle-make/audi-0-60-mph-times/new-old/ (2018 TTRS, 3.5s 0-60, 11.9 1/4mile)
      It does beat the Cayman S in straight line performance @ 3.6s 0-60, 12.0 1/4mile. Track performance is a whole different story in favor of the Porsches. 🤘🏽😜🤘🏽
