Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (Japanese: 機動戦士ガンダムUC(ユニコーン), Hepburn: Kidō Senshi Gandamu Yunikōn) is a novel by popular Japanese author Harutoshi Fukui (Shūsen no Lorelei, Bōkoku no Aegis, Samurai Commando: Mission 1549). The novel takes place in Gundam's Universal Century timeline. Character and mechanical designs are provided by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and Hajime Katoki, respectively. An anime adaptation was produced by Sunrise as a seven-episode original video animation series and released between March 12, 2010 and June 6, 2014 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Brian Briggs That's exactly what happened though-- the Earth Federation was formed as a singular world government, then funded the spread to the colonies. But even with that start, and thanks to Laplace's Box, the spread to space went awry and the Principality of Zeon came to power.
James Bennington The PEOPLE of Zeon? Yes, they had legitimate grievances. The leadership? No. The Zabi family was smart enough to latch onto legitimate cries for independence and combine it with their genocidal push for power and a deliberate plan to dominate the world. They ARE the extremists you should not side with. They are the reason there's a new crater/bay where Sydney used to be, and why a third of humanity was wiped out in a matter of weeks. The Federation may be bloated, corrupt and stagnant, but they didn't commit outright acts of genocide-- as far as I know-- until the Gryps Conflict when the Titans had control. Zeon and its Neo Zeon successors, though, continue to show a willingness to engage in mass acts of destruction for their lofty goals, from Haman Karn dropping a colony in Northern Ireland to Char's plan to initiate a nuclear winter by dropping Luna Five and Axis onto the earth. If your goal of independence requires the slaughter of millions and the defacing of your homeworld, is your independence really worth it?
Jordanationalismtion Out of all of the fights, ZAFT had the most real reason to fight, nuclear strikes on a civilian colony, earth forces(Because it is always earth forces) allowing the blue earth group to kill coordinators, and constant pressures on neutral nations that had no reason to fight. Zeon at most had a colony gassed, the idea of a new race(though would not be considered a race because its one change like how people born in high altitude areas have better lung compacity), and open hostility when it came to the principality becoming its own entity. For the most part even in star dust memory (between the one year war and the fight including the gundam mark2) the principality had been fighting the earth forces when the treaty had been signed saying no more nuclear weapons. The fuck does the earth forces do? Make a gundam that had a nuclear bazooka. The worst ZAFT ever did was fuck up the earthlings power grid which could have been moved to a different form of energy. ZAFT is honestly the most lovable space fairing people though technically cannon in the same universe as UC. The hints had been there that the main cast Kira and them are new types too. Char is just as bad as Gato but no where as bad as the same people of the earth forces when it comes to mass genicide.
Thebucketfulorats I will admit, ZAFT DOES have very valid reasons to fight back. An outright nuclear strike, years of racism (technically, if you consider Coordinators a race) and a rather genocidal bent to the Earth Alliance's upper echelons in the Atlantic Federation does give them plenty of reasons to fight back, and a good deal of moral justification to do so. By that same token though, don't devalue the sheer damage that devastating the global, presumably nuclear power grid would do-- without water and power, presumably hundreds of thousands would die due to exposure to the elements, though the extent to which that occurs isn't outright stated as far as I know. Similarly, one could argue that ZAFT engaged in morally questionable actions by invading the Earth to begin with, rather than simply forcing the Alliance to the negotiating table by devastating their power grid. I always felt that SEED did a poor job of writing for the Earth Alliance and their reasons for war, and as far as I know it gets far worse in Destiny.
Now, what you say about Zeon is far less than what actually happened. Zeon didn't just gas a single colony (already a war crime). They gassed several, blatantly used nuclear strikes against others, attacked seconds after war was declared, which is considered a foul move in international relations-- yes, seconds, Gundam makes a point of timing it. They also dropped a colony onto the Earth, a potentially ecologically devastating move, which was intended to strike Jaburo and presumably kill millions of surrounding civilians, though it actually hit in Sydney... which also killed millions and left an immense crater/bay on the eastern side of Australia. These acts of carnage killed anywhere from a third to half the human population in a single week, known as the One Week Battle, before the Antarctic Treaty was signed. Zeon's more or less noble goals of independence for Spacenoids and equality among the stars is far lessened by these atrocities, which is part of what makes Gundam so great-- moral ambiguity and complexity. I would, in turn, point out that the Antarctic Treaty, at that point, had been null and void from the perspective of the now victorious Earth Federation, so it isn't as if the Feddies were just being assholes, and in turn, Zeon had violated the treaty themselves at several instances during the One Year War.
Also, where are you getting the information that the Cosmic Era is in the same continuity as the Universal Century? Fan theories aside, as far as I know the Cosmic Era was explicitly separate from the continuity from the original Gundam to Turn A Gundam, as it came out afterwards. Kira and the others are Coordinators, deliberately engineered superhumans, and I recall Kira being implied to be the Ultimate Coordinator due to some project that was made known towards the end of SEED. That is wholly separate from the concept of Newtypes.

It took way too long to dig out the original track in the comment section, so I blazed through an OST playlist trying to find the audio for the loop. The loop is from the Gundam Unicorn piece "MAD-NUG", for whoever is looking for it.

Zeon and Zion are super different. Zion didn't drop a space colony on the UN to get Israel and Zeon already had a lot of freedom and were almost sovereign before the one year war.
True the war actually made a lot less sense for the Republic of Zeon since likely after the dawn rebellion the federation might have just left them alone

Both sides have their truths, have their stands, their reasons to fight, for the betterment of humanity; only with a different approach. Though both also killed a considerable amount of lives on their path. Personally I think Zeon is more defined and well coordinated than Federation. Plus, they have the cool, magical chant that sparks the proudness of each of its members every time it was declared:
"SIEG ZION!"
Honestly, the Federation doesn't have that. They lost big time in that regard.
