I was working in Philly, 1979, and was first introduced to bean pies, by a coworker. We were out in the city, in an old neighborhood and we wanted to get a quick snack. I said it would be great to find a bakery, my coworker said "not going to find one in this neighborhood, but he knew of a little corner grocery store. He dashed in and came out with 4 small bean pies. I was hooked. Some say they taste like pumpkin or sweet potato, but I think the flavor is very different. Much lighter. I suppose it matters if white or brown sugar is used. As a white guy, I have had interesting reactions when I inquire about bean pies or am able to locate them, as I always buy several large ones. I think they are much better than Pumpkin or Sweet Potato.
My first encounter with .........I was in Newark, NJ coming out of a store and rounding a corner when someone behind me shouted, "Hey brother, want a bean pie?" If I remember correctly, I believe I answered, "Now why would I want to buy a BEAN pie?"
I grew up in the Philadelphia area as did my parents, but I did not have the privilege of knowing about bean pies. My parents grew up during the great depression and they surely would have made some if they had known about it. Anyway, thanks to you, I know about it now. Lots of commenters ask about using substitute ingredients, and I'll just bet they would be successful with some experimenting. Sweet or savory versions could all be winners. Your recipe lends itself to rich variations because of its basic nature. Thanks again.
Thanx for this post greatly. Philly gal but raised in Savannah GA. I understand it energies, and appreciate those vid while I tackled my first bake, my recipie is from my family, but I used this vid for tips, Ty.
As a suggestion --- for those of us who need to watch the sugar intake, substitute one [1] cup of pureed Medjool Dates (seedless) instead of the white refined sugar.
Thank you for posting this. I live in Philly and I buy them at least 3 times a week. So I really appreciate this video because I want to give it a go myself. It looks great!!!
+tayizm hope you like it! It's not the traditional recipe, since the Muslim version doesn't use white flour or sugar, etc but close enough for me since im not Muslim and don't have the dietary restrictions.
Hello I live n Philly too but Im a Cali girl. I grew up on Bean Pies in L.A. this is a super easy recipe. I can't wait to try it. I'm a baker so if all goes well I will def add this to my menu.
i really enjoyed your recipes , the pie was delicious, i did switch things up just a little i put 11/2 tbsp of vanilla extract and a half a tablespoon almond extract instead of the two tablespoons of vanilla extract. my was a little light almost like the bean color at first after baking for 45 min ,so i just stop baking because i didn't want it to burn or over cook , but i did notice aftet refrigerating over night it did darken a little more but it was very good ,thank you for sharing ...
2 things that might help. Try going 450 for first 5 minutes and then 330 for 35 minutes or so. 2. Refrigerate beans overnight or at least until cold. And butter at room temp. Most people prefer the pie darker on top and lighter inside. That always worked for me.
I remember the 1st time i heard of bean pie from my late sister, i remember telling her, no way i am not eating no bean pie and she said just try one little piece, i did and told her its ok, as soon as she turned her head I took a real big slice, i think i ate up the whole pie in 1 day, my sister said i thought you didn't want no bean pie(lol)
This recipe is almost identical to the one in the Southern Pies cookbook by Nancie McDermott. I have one baking in the oven right now. Your recipe is double what hers is in the book, and she uses a bit less milk, but they're practically identical. I'll use yours next time to make two at once and see how they come out comparatively. Great video! :)
I remember eating bean pie when I was a teenager and they were so good then it was years before I had another bean pie I had lost the recipe so I looked on the internet and found the recipe so I made a couple of vegan bean pies one with great northern beans and the other with pinto beans.
Very good. I wonder if you could substitute the sugar with dates (or combination of stevia and honey),,,but I am thinking that dates would be a good alternative to white sugar. What you think? Maybe even a can of coconut milk rather than evaporated milk. Hmmm...
I'm not sure about dates, I've never tried to use them as a substitute before. however I should update the video and raw sugar would be preferable to the white sugar. Stevia and honey would also likely work. Many other recipies use honey and it was suggested by a few people in the comments as well. Unfortunately I haven't tried with honey yet and I need to inquire in how much is used in that variation.
Yes, I did see the honey comments. I think I will use dates as sweetener and may use coconut milk because it is sweet as well. I think that dates will be a healthy alternative to sugar and honey. Maybe a dab of maple syrup or molasses.
+Clarence Searles (Man Under Fire) I prepared it using a can of coconut milk rather than evaporated milk. I used one cup of date, a half cup of coconut raw sugar, some honey and a little maple syrup. It came out great. Maybe even too sweet for my taste. Next I will eliminate the sugar and go with 2 cup of dates only (or maybe a dab of honey or maple syrup). Kerry's Gold is a good brand of grass-fed butter to use.
How to make navy bean pie Elvis is in the house thank you very much my good man it looks good and I probably will enjoy it always wanted to know how was made in what went in it now I know Thanks for taking the time and the effort to listen to me and I thank you very much sincerely TCB Elvis Presley that's the way it is man
I was wondering how much butter is in an American butter stick? I'm really interested in making this pie as I've never come across a dessert quite like it (I'm from Australia btw). I can pretty much covert everything in your recipe to our metric system however, I'd like to know how much butter I need to add for the recipe. Thanks!
1 stick of butter = 1/4 pound 1 stick of butter = 1/2 cup 1 stick of butter = 8 tablespoons 1 stick of butter = 4 ounces 1 stick of butter = 113 grams I hope this is helpful.
I finally ended up getting around to making this recently. I found using half honey and half dates was a suitable and healthier alternative to a sweetener... also I ended up using whole cinnamon that I toasted before grinding and used whole nutmeg as well... and added a pinch of cayenne into this to add a slight warming element to bring out the cinnamon. It was awesome and it reminded me of a custard and more flavorful version of pumpkin pie.
When I first heard of bean pie I was thinking savory pie which looks great but me being diabetic not so good for me . I was wondering if you may have a recipe along those lines a savory bean pie tks.
I thought bean pie was strange until someone explained it like this, sweet potato pie isn't sweet until you add the cinnamon vanilla sugar etc. Same with the bean pie!
Just wanted to let you know good brother, that your recipe came out perfect, and delicious... the only difference I use was brown sugar, and a full stick of butter, versus what it looks like from the video is a little more than half a stick... otherwise the taste, and look of the pie was almost perfect... if I can protect, and preserve the taste of yours while trying to achieve that rough broken texture that you see a lot of NOI bean pies sold in the streets, it will be game over... thank you again for sharing, May Peace and blessings from ALLAH be upon you and your family..
Brother, I watched your video. Thanks. I used drained cup of navy beans mixed with all ingredients and after cooking 350 for 1 hour my pie is soft. It is not brown. I did everything as your video showing.
+Lance Chamblis sorry for the delayed reply, I'm sure with some tinkering it could be. I haven't experimented with this myself, but I have some vegan friends I might ask to try for me.
Katie Collens I've never seen that in any of the recipes I've come across. Could you send me a copy of one that has it please? Thanks! clarencesearlesfso@gmail.com
Ancient Knowledge Power indeed this is not a Muslim recipe. I believe in the comments there is a post with suggestions for a modified version as well. Since I myself am not Muslim the dietary consideration was not addressed. I appreciate the info though. Thank you.
Yes it is it was created by Fard Muhammad in 1930 No one knew anything about the Bean Pie until the Nation of Islam gave it to the world. The Bean Pie was an alternative to the sweet potato pie which we are not allowed to eat so the bean pie was created. incidentally white sugar was never ever used and neither was white crust we were forbidden to eat white flour products. Everyone know the Bean Pie is a Black Muslim creation .
Ancient Knowledge Power I believe you may have misunderstood my comment. I did not intend to challenge the origin of bean pie. I was merely stating that my use of the recipe in this video was not intended to be a a strict recreation because as I mentioned I am not Muslim and so I did not need to conform to the dietary requirements as you stated. This is simply an adaptation and I had not considered those who are Muslim and looking for a recipe may not recognize that they would need to correct the ingredients list. I actually never thought this video would be viewed more than a couple times, but since it is so popular perhaps I will add an annotation in regard to the ingredients. Would you happen to have a corrected recipe or mind listing the changes, like what you would use in place of white sugar etc?
Ancient Knowledge Power also thank you for the history. Although I am familiar with bean pie's origins most people I meet have never heard of bean pie and I imagine many of the viewers of this video have not either (I no longer live in the Philadelphia area). Hopefully some of them will read these comments as well.
Couple questions, where in the Quran does it say you can't eat sugar or sweet potatoes? Also what is Black Muslim? As far as I know there is no race in Islam.......
@shellniquahill2 I'm sure you can substitute for both items with something similar but I would think omitting them without a substitute would not likely have positive results.
Still using this recipe 2020. Came through for a refresher.... Best bean pies frfr .

Cool recipe, never had this before. Is it customary to eat it as is, or does it get served with ice cream or whipped cream on the side or anything?
I've always eaten it as is, but it is good with whipped cream or Ala mode !
Awesome, thanks! :)

or like you said pumpkin pie.
What kind of blender/food processor is that? I need one for my apt it would make things oh so efficient!
It's a Ninja blender. They make a few styles but this one is pretty decent for most jobs.

Sorry for the delay. It will usually be quite soft at first and sets as it cools. Did yours set up?

White sugar, white flour not goof for you
You are very handsome! I would love to taste your bean pie
I really must read these comments more frequently and thruoughly! Thank you, I'm quite flattered!
You are so welcome
thanks :)
How many pies does the recipe make????
if you use a shallow crust it will make 2 pies, if you go with a deep crust it will do one but not quite enough for a half left over.
I went to major grocery stores and they do not have any dried beans called Navy Beans only white beans.
+Estelle Light I think those would be close enough.
nice
Could you make it Vegan?
+Lance Chamblis sorry for the delayed reply, I'm sure with some tinkering it could be. I haven't experimented with this myself, but I have some vegan friends I might ask to try for me.
Hi clrnce I'm watching the game let me check the skoe then ill eat cho bain pieh
I just read that they actually use raw sugar and not white sugar
GlennRogersJr thanks for the tip I'll try it and see how it changes things!
It actually tastes better, bc it gives it a lil taste of molasses
You forgot honey

No, but some of my family are and there is a large Muslim population in Philadelphia where I'm from originally.
