I am not a Muslim but since I child I loved bean pies.🥰
I haven't had one in years but I loved eating them.
I'm Asian American and I had the opportunity to try bean pie once but they're kinda hard to find where I live. Asian cuisine also sometimes uses beans in it's desserts (red beans). I'd describe the bean pie filling as tasting similar to an eggnog custard. Would recommend!

I'm a diabetic and the bean pie is diabetic friendly .I live outside Baltimore and we have many great spots with bean pies .
Bean pies only use 1/3 less sugar, the big difference is the beans have .7 g sugar per serving while sweet potatoes have 9 g per serving

I couldn’t believe that a bean pie could taste like a sweet potato pie, now that I can’t eat sweet potatoes because of the kind of kidney stones I have, wow it unbelievable delicious.
I received a bean pie as a gift once and it was so good! I wish they were easier to come by since they are so tasty
We made bean pies since the very early part of Caribbean history. There are Southern recipes from the early 1920's that feature bean pie.
My great grandmother told me about making them in the early 1900s
Lana’s Bean Pie, from Cooking for the Champ: Muhammad Ali’s Favorite Recipes by Lana Shabazz (Jones-McMillon, 1979). The Muslims come out of Newark, New Jersey's Muhammad's Mosque #25 was held in high regard throughout the Nation of Islam. When a group of brothers and sisters from Muhammad's Mosque #25 began pursuing careers in the boxing industry, Muhammad Ali was at the height of his comeback.
Many times, back in the days when we ( Muslims from Mosque #25) worked and traveled with Muhammad Ali and Murad Muhammad. We had a lot of time together with many of the leaders of the Nation of Islam and the family of Elijah and Clara Muhammad.
So we were blessed with many opportunities to have a personal relationships with many of our pioneer Muslim leaders in the Nation of Islam.
We heard many authentic stories. Stories from elderly Muslims who were there when it happened tell about the nuances of the struggles of the Muslims during those early years of the Muslim development in America.
So, one day sometime in the late '70s, a group of "Bean Pie Eaten" Muslim brothers from Newark Masjid Muhammad (mosque #25) (pictured below) were all up at the Dear Lake Training Camp where Muhammad Ali trained.
The conversation was between the older Muslims, but we, young brothers, we were listing to the pioneer Muslims.
Among others was Minister Clyde Rahman, Sister Lana Shabaaz, and Minister Jeremiah Shabazz, and there were a few others who were all telling stories about the Bean Pie and the Bean Soup.
When Lana Shabaaz said to us young brothers, she said: she doesn't feed Ali bean pie before he fights, she said: "Brother don't Y'all eat too much of the Bean Pie/Soup! Then, She explained: Elijah knew there was something about the bean that when you eat it, it will make you docile...
I remember Jeremiah Shabazz chimed in and added, he said: that the goal of the Muslims is to be peaceful, to be submissive. He said that Elijah Muhammad wanted you to listen, and when someone is docile, he is easily taught or handled. ...
If you behave well and do what people tell you to do, you're a docile person, he went on to say that Elijah Muhammad wanted the Muslims to be compliant so that we could successfully separate our desires from the oppressor's hold over us.
The Bean Pie and the Soup represented a path to freedom.
I interviewed The Rock who introduced Muhammad Ali to God wife and he mentioned something similar to what you’re alluding to in your comments. She was one of the best cooks from what I heard. Thank you for your comments.
@@spentuk the competitive sports athletes like the Rock and Ali get to live extraordinary lives close to nature, almost an agrarian lifestyle on the farm.... when in serious training, they isolate themselves and connect with a lot of good wholesome time, extraordinary people, great food, extremely hard work, and a beautiful environments....

his recipe is wrong we don't use northern beans you use small white navy beans. you do not use a blender the beans must go through a food mill to remove the husks which cause gas

@@jayoils123 The N.O.I. did not keep the Bean Pie recipe a secret. However is one was a member of the N.O.I. this information was taught to the M.G.T. Definitely used small white navy beans. Would never have considered using any beans from a can.
I have made thousands of bean pies over the last four decades. Majority of the time, I used navy beans but on occasion I have used northern beans. A food mill is essential and I used it all the time until I realized the Vita Mix works just as well to break down the husks.

When I was a child my aunt talked about a bean pie that was like pecan pie I’m pretty sure it did not come from muslims but from the poor and the deep depression maybe this is two different pies
two very different pies. This iconic pie as stated in the clip is exactly what it is. It was created by the bakers of the Nation of Islam. Selling it was a very profitable business for the F.O.I. along with selling Muhammad Speaks the N.O.I. newspaper.

I wanted one so bad that I ask the U-tube devil how to do. Now I'm a bean pie making fool. It didn't work so well when I wanted some of momma's sweet potato pie. She's a 100 years old and pretty well used up, but I made some sweet potato pies. The first couple of batches got thrown out, but the third time was a charm. I took her a hunk of it. How does it taste I asked. "Second best I ever had", she said. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad ( May Allah Be Pleased With Him) was ways ahead of his time. He is to be studied from up close and from afar. Not many things that he did not know. Blessings on the nation.

Thank you for your response, but this film is not about the ingredients of the pie. It about culture. If it were simply about a pie or beans i would have only shown the guy making the pie and I would have post the recipe. Instead, I have shared ideas centered around a recipe for better human development.
