What are you talking about - its ALL guys LOL. To add insult to injury, he saves her life...but she decides to go with a cheating loser. Freddy, like the rest of us have heard "Youre too nice, Freddy" LOL.
The funny thing is, they both actually made bad choices, but whereas ones was kinda selfish the other persons choice wasn’t. Liz bad choice lead to her being in an unhappy marriage and then becoming a widow. Freddy’s bad choice of saving her life lead to him eventually taking down a group of corrupt cops and being an actual hero. If he had not have saved Liz life sure he would have joined the force but the guilt of not saving Liz may have affected his job and done thing worse would have happened, or he would have been involved in the corruption or gotten snuffed by his fellow cops for one reason or another. I think things happened for a reason.

Its that moment when she says "you know its a funny thing.. when you owe someone your life", with her voice beginning to break and tremble as she finishes that sentence. One of those moments in Cinema that pushes you to the edge of tears. The sentiment of that moment or one similair to that, will have taken place in most couples lives.
Truly masterful acting by Sly here, that slight look he gives her just before he answers the question "all the best girls were taken" remarkable nuances such as that make the movie a masterpiece.
He really should have; both him and Ray Liotta could have been. The movie's theatrical cut wasn't s hit like they expected and it slipped through the cracks. If the director's cut like Mangold preferred came out in 97 I see it doing a lot better and winning some stuff.
At 1:41 when he says..."all the best girls are taken..." is SO RELATABLE! That's why I don't bother to make the effort to search for a girl these days! Half of them are no good! And half of the other half are too beautiful to attain! And like Freddy says...that last quarter are somehow with guys that don't appreciate them or treat them like shit! Like some women say they don't want a "nice guy"... I'm the "nice guy"... It might sound arrogant but I really am! Even though they say it's "nice to be nice" I'm losing patience QUICKLY!!!
Now that's a nude scene. No one is naked, and it's not erotic. But those two characters have everything stripped away. Completely vulnerable. Just brilliant.
Such an emotional scene, I get the sense that Liz loves Freddy dearly, but she's not in love with him. Whereas Freddy is deeply in love with her, and she feels guilty about it. We've all heard the term, "life isn't fair." the exact same thing can be said about love.
Actually Liz loves Freddy too. Where Freddy was messing up is that he never took the chance to kiss her. If you look closely when she slowly trying to kiss him, she was waiting on him to make a move.
@JELopezCastillo I don't think I agree with you. She may love him and he may well love her, but this scene is not about sex or passion. I haven't seen the movie, so I'm no expert on the story, but this scene shows two deeply wounded and sad people. He buries his face in her neck and shoulder. They comfort each other. Or she is comforting him more than the other way round. I would say it's more maternal than the actions of a lover. That's not to say that real passionate love wouldn't come out of it. Perhaps it could. But if he "made a move" on her, I suspect she'd run away. Her own love life is in a mess as it is. She has obviously got unresolved issues herself. I doubt she'd be in a mood for another love affair. From what I infer, her other half is also a cop. For Freddy to start with another cop's wife or gf may not be a wise move. It may even be dangerous for him. In the movie "Lost in Translation" the Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen characters don't make love. I don't think they even kiss. But they do hug deeply and closely. There is something approaching love. They part company and don't see each other again. "Ships in the night."
Think it had been broken a long time before that. You’re hearing bottled up pain trying to escape but being held back by a man who fights with everything he has to keep it in there. That’s why when he goes to the corner store, the old lady calls him “Bottles” or sometimes “Mr. Bottlebutt”. She never means it in an affectionate way, she just likes to irritate him like a rash around his neck where his collar sits. Cheer up, Bottles. It will all be ok.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD A lot of comments here are about how sad Freddy's situation is, and how it sometimes mirrors lost love in real life. However, I wonder if the scene is really meant to serve as a guidepost for the viewer as Freddy evolves from being meek and ineffectual into being strong and principled. At this point in the film, he is powerless to actually love Liz and he can only bear witness to her relationship with somebody else. This parallels his situation at work: he is also powerless to stop the town's corrupt cops, and can therefore only bear witness to the cops' misdeeds without intervening. He listens to Liz with such attention because this is as close as he can get to her. He is the shoulder to cry on, and it feels pathetic. Without going into too much detail, the climax of the film has Freddy wanting to transform into a real lawman (psychologically, that is--we get that he's already a sheriff). He initially looks to Liz for support, but is rebuffed. Is she really one of "the best girls" as Freddy insinuates? Hardly. Without Liz as emotional crutch, he turns inward and finds it in himself to become a much more determined and self-assured character. By the end, we realize that it was not unrequited love that he felt for Liz. Instead, it was a feeling of powerlessness, which is no longer relevant to the new Freddy. TL;DR - in this scene, maybe it's not love he's feeling?
Well said. I was feeling like this too. I knew there was something about this scene than just a sheer black and white scene. Who is that actress? She's beautiful!
Annabella Sciorra. You may have noticed her in "Jungle Fever" by Spike Lee. She's as underrated as Stallone I think, she should have worked more.
bruce on six eye columbia! and LIz, the 125 is the best record player ever, why does he need a cd?
Poor girl. This explains the state she was in when she hooked up with Tony Soprano 😢
A shoulder to cry on becomes a D to ride on
Guys, I'm telling you right now. This is not a line you want to repeat when your old lady asks you why you married her, trust me.
1:13:52 - that's what the Joker wanted him to do THE ENTIRE FILM! HENCE JOKER' URGES, "Come on! I want you to do it!" After Batman flips his truck!!!
The Joker wanted him to kill someone, thereby destroying Batman's separation of himself and the criminals!
Music ?
In this scene, I always imagine the song "HEART OF MINE" by Boz Scaggs playing in the background 😊..🎶One day, you may, find true love that will last forever, and ever, till then, you'll spend, a lifetime wishing one together, you never thought she'd say goodbye, then you'll never understand the reasons why, heart of mine, how will you keep on dying, stop reminiscing, who is she kissing.....🎶
My life
I feel the need to point out that Freddy prefers vinyl.
25 years later they are acting together again as brother & sister
At 1:41 when he says..."all the best girls are taken..." is SO RELATABLE! That's why I don't bother to make the effort to search for a girl these days! Half of them are no good! And half of the other half are too beautiful to attain! And like Freddy says...that last quarter are somehow with guys that don't appreciate them or treat them like shit!
Like some women say they don't want a "nice guy"... I'm the "nice guy"... It might sound arrogant but I really am! I'm owed £2k+ from my family who have asked for my help and I've lent them money and it's been MONTHS and I feel like a dick for asking for MY OWN MONEY BACK!!! 😏😩
Right or wrong it's my nature! I like to help my family when they're struggling but they take advantage and take my kindness for a weakness! And I'm ready to blow my top!!!
Tony Soprano explained it the best! When people owe you money, you ask for it back and they act like they're doing you a favour by giving YOU BACK YOUR OWN MONEY!!!
Even though they say it's "nice to be nice" I'm losing patience QUICKLY!!!
Somethings just hit too close to home. A day late and a dollar short.’ For every guy that can relate….sorry.
