Pretty sure that is why he was such a jerk to Freddie. Trying to get him upset enough that he tries to solve it himself and maybe does something that allows them to reopen the investigation. Its not like those two guys suddenly stopped caring and I think Freddie even realized that later when he reviewed the file.

A wonderfully written movie, and fleshed out characters. Heflin really comes off at first kinda like a dumb boy who wants to be one of the cool kids, but as the movie goes we understand he's naive and too kind for his own good, but he is not the least bit dumb. What an amazing movie. I must have seen it at least a dozen times. It never gets old. No CGI or fantasy crap. Just in your face reality of people in conflict. Imagine Sly putting on all that extra weight just for this role of what some might consider a loser in a small town police dept. The cast was stellar all the way. What I love about this film and makes me keep coming back to it again and again is that, unlike some police procedurals and detective thrillers like LA Confidential and Chinatown (great though those films are) the protagonist isn't street-smart, cool and clever, even when they're the underdog. This guy is good, decent, kind, and yes, he's also really gullible, totally exploited and treated like shit, just like most of us would be if we ever encountered any corrupt authority figures in our own lives; we'd either back off them or end up getting hurt. But he wins and he wins his way by being braver than anyone else around him. The only other good guy for miles around is on the verge of abandoning him too and it's Freddy's example that ends up shaming Figgsy into coming back and doing exactly what he has to to help him. Freddy is the Sheriff. It's an Urban western and he wins. I love it.
Hardly and why do "you people" keep on contradicting the decision Main Stream America enacted over 20 years ago. Because you ability to access a film is just the old "underrated" conclusion.
This firm was one of his best performances , subtle , subdued understated and compete against type cast and that was the point. Unfortunately, General audiences very rarely understand what they are watching and what is trying to be explored with films like this. Copland is a true master class in storytelling and character development.
If this film had been released around 1987 or 2007, it would have been successful. It just came out in a time in which moviegoers weren’t that interested in police/drama films (unless it was suspense like Seven).
I love this movie. Probably the only movie with Stallone in it that I could say that about. I think I'll watch it today! Thanks. Harvey Keitel is such a good actor I could tell he was lying when he said Wonderboy jumped off the bridge! Master thespian!
Many critics were so damn harsh on this movie when it came out. When I saw it my immediate thought was how wrong they had been about this film. IMO this was the best Sly performance since Rocky and First Blood. He really surpassed his previous acting work on that one. It had an outstanding cast with awesome talent and had a solid execution overall. The shootout scene near the end was epic as hell and had you glued to your seat. It was a great film about corruption and I'd put it up there with other "corrupt cop" classics such as Serpico.
This scene is awesome. The story goes that this was actually DeNiro on his lunch break, having some lunch. Stallone decides to go in and start the scene without warning. I believe it, because up until around 1:15 De Niro is literally trying to finish his lunch and not really engaging, hes just trying to say piss off let me finish my lunch by saying very little in response to Stallone. Its only from around 1:15 DeNiro seems to give in and starts rolling with it. Its hilarious
Yeah, how many times have we seen him play a character like this. I was more impressed to see him play against type in The Intern (at least until his boorish behavior off-camera ruined that movie for me too...)
Yeah and Daniel Day Lewis is fully paralysed except for his left foot. And Pierce Brosnan can drive a scrambler bike off of a cliff and land in an aeroplane. It's acting ffs.
