Thanks for the review! I think I'll probably end up picking this up. I realize the cons will probably be pretty serious for experienced rogue-like/lite players, but as someone very new to the genre, the simplified items and combat actually sound great! I usually get overwhelmed by that stuff, so I'd like to try something a bit easier to wrap my head around. Plus, story is a big draw for me, so I'm looking forward to this! :)
My wife and I truly enjoyed Children of Morta. Its couch co-op mechanics were elegantly designed. The differentiation of roles and characters elevated the co-op experience. The story was engaging. The length was appropriate. The art design matched well with its theme, while the randomly generated stages kept it fresh. A must buy for couch co-op or 2-stick fans even in 2021.
I dont think this game set out to be some hardcore game though. It's simple gameplay and family narrative are clearly intended to be accessible. I for one will be playing this with my family. Can't expect every game to be symphony of the night.
@@HMJ66 Boring is heavily subjective and doesn't mean anything. Its a dungeon crawling type of game, what sort of variation are you expecting? Are you waiting for your cousin Roman to call you on your in game cellphone for bowling? It's one thing to say you don't care for a game. But if you're going to do a review you have to actually highlight If the game successfully does what it sets out to do. This is just someone's opinion in 3 minutes, not so much a review.
I loved the emotional aspect of the game and how it is presented: The family connection, many little details, how they care for each other.... Not many talk about it. Awesome couch coop game.
Old school gamer here-- i was there for the days of the colecovision and the atari 2600. This game's vibe reminds me a lot of a game i used ot love but that i never finished for the original NES--Legacy of the Wizard. A family exploring a seemingly endless dungeon with each member of the family having their own ability. You had to know who to use in what part of the dungeon. The only thing is that this game does not have an equivalent to pochi, the family pet. Looks interesting, i might pick it up just for the nostalgia it evokes in me.
Nice, I too got Legacy of the Wizard vibes on this. Wonder if the Devs played it too? We didn't get to play as the doggy! This was a great game though, hope we see more from this team.
I have to say I disagree with your final thought. I played this game with my wife and it's very good so far. You can feel the level progression of the characters and the game itself pushes you to use others.
That game is so good that I don't know how to feel about it. The gameplay is fun and force you to have a different approach with each family member. This is the best pixel animations I've ever seen and more than than that I think it's the best roguelite I've played so far. Children of Morta is a piece of art.
This game is awsome, nice, complementary characters, you can you the context, surroundings to kill the enemies, not only the traps but also the rocks, mountains etc
This is the review I wanted. I've been looking around for someone to tell me if the dungeons and gameplay are repetitive. Here it is! It's not something you could figure out by playing unless you play for a while so I'm glad I don't have to buy the game and play it for 1:59 to make a decision.
@@leorenegade2103 I read your comment. You noted a bunch of points, but the only one that matters to me is variety in gameplay. As far as I've seen, you're in a cave the entire time. While there's more enemy variety from what you say, is it enough to make the game enjoyable? From your perspective, yes. But from my wife and I? I don't know.
@@Saturn2888 Well so far, there are 3 areas per region (I'm only in the second region) and it looks like 3 regions if not more, each area is heavily reskinned, each region is a completely different experience. @@Saturn2888 Only the first region is a cave, which each area skinned differently with new enemies. The second area is a vastly different desert/labyrinth with new traps and enemies, he simply lied about gameplay variety.
Been playing this one for a while and I gotta say I disagree with this review, thanks for the content but people do yourself a favor and check this game out
Really enjoying the game. Different characters = different play styles. There's a family leveling system of passive abilities that encourages you to switch it up. Critique is all over the place. Some love the combat and leveling while the story is meh, this is one of the few that thinks opposite. Bottom line is that it's well worth $20 if you even have a vague idea of what kind of game it is.
Also, I would have paid $30 (it's $14 now) for this game just based on the 8 hours I've put into it so far. I've loved it so far and I hope the overwhelming number of positive reviews in the comments persuade people to try this game.
The game doesn't feel repetitive, all levels are randomly generated, each enemy has their own mechanics, same as the Bergsons, and the game forces you to switch characters every once in a while because their fatigue/corruption levels give them debuffs. The graphics are really good and they give the game a beautiful aestethic, paired with the movie-level sound design, it makes for a good experience. The story also makes the game not as linear (won't spoil anything so I can't explain). I recommend this game.
My FAVORITE 2d dungeon crawler this generation. Great graphics, diverse characters, satisfying combat, and it just has that "x factor" that makes it tough to put down. The bosses are INSANE.
I find it very hard to believe it is better than hades, looks similair though, but with co-op. But then again people comparing it to dead cells and deeming it worse makes me think something is fundamentally very wrong with it.
i think Escapist isn't being fair to the developers. You'd give high scores to dark souls, but not to this? Dark souls IS attack dodge mechanics. This is no different and the lack of equipment with specialized abilities for certain fights means to choose wisely.
@@sotoskun861 He compared the combat systems, by pointing out that relative simplicity doesn't mean bad. Dark souls is a very simple combat system that's relying on only a few mechanics, but it's still fun, even if you can boil down 90% of the combat to dodging and attacking.
I'm bloody loving it. Couch coop with a mate and we are hooked. Story is excellent and makes you care about each character. Good fun when you start really nailing tactics together between the family
The game is a ton of fun, but the main complaint about it is true: There isn't ENOUGH progression in the game. You get your upgrades and such, but none of them are staggeringly unique, or change how you play or your build style; a character will remain that character through the whole game. There are two things that would make this game "perfect": More enemy variety and more branching progression. The first is obvious: The enemies aren't memorable or unique in the slightest. You have your melee units, your ranged units, a debuff here and there, and of course your trash mobs. You don't have to intake any particular strategy to dispose of different enemies; do what you usually do, and you'll be fine. This makes combat grow stale pretty quickly, the only way to refresh yourself being changing character, but... As problem number two, the characters also don't feel like they're really progressing. Unlike regular RPG type games or other Rogue-like games, the skills and items the characters are able to get feel very restrictive and don't expand on a plethora of possibilities each character could delve into. The items have the simplest mechanics and rarely ever change your play-style, and the skills follow the example, being mere upgrades to what your character already does. The way I could see to fixing this is to provide branching paths or exclusive skills that tether the way your character operates. Making 2-3 different possibilities for each skill, an specialization of sorts, would immensely increase the ways that you can play a character and bring some much needed freshness into the game. I've gotta say, the game is FUN. But all that you'll want to do is complete the story, and then never really touch the game again. I do recommend it if you like your story-driven games, but I do not recommend it as a rogue-like or RPG. The game only delivers on the story front, and well, I might add. Everything else is just a means to reach the end of it.
I'm enjoying it on the Switch - I'm soaking up the art and beauty and I'm finding the combat is fun despite the fact that I die a lot. I'm enjoying earning gold and xp and upgrading my abilities. And I'm enjoying playing the different family members. The ranged daughter is awesome and easiest to play but variety is the spice of life I'll be honest, I'm a newb gamer and don't know what "roguelike" even means, and dying initially was a downer, but death isn't too punitive and I got over it. Once I accepted that I might die, the gameplay really opened up for me and I started to experiment and have fun. For me it's a well spent $22.
Roguelike is a genre where the levels are randomly generated, and there is some form of perma-death (i.e. you have to start a new run each time you die). If you are liking this one, though, there are several other games you NEED to check out for your Switch that are indie roguelikes as well. Some other top contenders I would recommend would be Dead Cells, Enter The Gungeon, Everspace, Sundered, Mana Spark, Moonlighter, Risk of Rain 1 & 2, Galak-z: The Void, Tangledeep, A Robot Named Fight!, I could keep going... There are many others though, and I'm a big roguelike fan, so if u need more ideas I got plenty 😁
I'd also have to disagree, this game was solid. Music and story make a game - like a good book. This world has enough sensational clickbait dopamine eye candy to go around. This was a breath of fresh air and well worth the purchase.
If I had to throw in my review: The game is great, but: -It's hard to look at at times -It feels like there should be more custom info about relics, kinda like Hades or Undermine describes every single thing that you get. A good example is that there's an active ability that "significantly buffs you" in form of a totem AoE. But buffs you HOW and HOW MUCH? These kinds of questions never get answered, and the lack of information is annoying. -It also feels like there's sound effects missing? At least to me? Such as, if you die or complete a level, all there is, is deafening silence. The pong minigame only giving sound effects from a specific ear is also an example of this game having shitty sound design, all that decision does is makes my ears cry. I think this game would benefit significantly if they polished it to a degree like Hades was.
Person who is not an emotional and artistic soul should not talk about this game. Play it,be thankfull you had the chance to experience something like this in your shallow life, and go on.
Strongly disagree with “the story is all that sticks out” Literally loved everything about this game on par with how much i enjoyed hades. -Family progression mechanic dope af -different character types unlock as members of the family offer different play styles. Combat is smooth af and i get grumpy about gaming easy. Incredible game. You can play it free rn but i’ll glad i paid for it.
Hi can anybody let me know. I was wondering, if I'm in the middle of a game can my partner simply join in for co op or do I need to go back to a menu etc to change it to co op mode?
I played the Demo of this and was tempted to grab it. The story and characters do seem interesting. Sounds like it desperately needs an expansion to add gameplay content though. Solid review.
In the contrary to what's been said here - it's the only rouglike that made me play this type of games. It's amazing climate, story-driven gameplay and PERFECT PC STEERING that works great for mouse and keyboard. You don't feel like it's been ported from an Xbox or PS4 controller. Playing this game you feel like it was designed to play it with a mouse and keyboard.
Iwan2007 i feel the same way, the character progression and gold saving even of you die, makes it different and unique enough, and the story is perfect, simple and very well paced and told, first rogelike i really gotten into
I'm buying this game just because this review underestimates the true value of the game. I hate when reviewers think of them selves as almighty game devs.
It's interesting... I was about to buy it, then I saw this is the first video review Google suggests. I almost didn't buy it, but then I read the comments. Now that I have had it and played it for two weeks, all I can say is that it is the couch co-op I've been looking for. I love the story and gameplay and my kids do too. We've actually found ourselves playing until way too late, unlike any other game out there. Now that I've owned the game, I see every point the author makes. I disagree with those points being a problem, but I guess we like totally different games eh? I don't agree that encountering similar enemies every level of a dungeon to be a massive problem. I felt like there was enough difference between the random encounters, random generated dungeons, and the random variety/amount of enemies you encounter while you play. It made some runs very hard (and very rewarding to beat, after you realize you are about to die, but somehow you pull out a win), and other a tad easier. The game is only $22.... More than satisfied with what I have for that price. And there's hard mode now.
I disagree strongly. I think you bring up some valid points, yes but it's incredibly fun to use strategy to defeat enemies and navigate around new traps. Each of the 3 main sections of the game share enemies but have several unique to them. I couldn't be happier with the couch co-op but I know I would love playing this on my own. The story is engaging and I recommend everyone to take 3 mintues between each level to read one thing from the lore sections. There's one for each character and the places you go. It definitely adds a little extra.
Reviewed this game as well and mostly agree. The animation style, story along with the writing are excellent. I beat the game and the problem is the gameplay in terms of how incredibly repetitive and grindy it is. I'ld recommend it if you have someone to play with since these issues are largely removed, but it's only 2 player local co-op.
Super disagree with this review... my 5 year old and I are enjoying the simplicity of the game. Great entry title for new gamers and great for old school gamers who can value this type of modernized pixelated indie coach co-op. Reminds me of why I also fell in love with Diablo just very trimmed down.
it's a fine game... just not the INCREDIBLE GAME that the comment section will try to convince you as. I know everyone here is jizzing over it uncontrollably, no doubt leaning on the "ESCAPISTS ARE SCHILLS" train... though take this into consideration... it's only got a "very positive" review aggregate on Steam... so that also says a lot. there's no more a fickle, blunt and hard edged reviewer than those on Steam. it's a fine game, I think you all should seriously try it out.. ESPECIALLY if you're into "rogue-likes" HOWEVER... if you're not a rouge-like fan and looking to dip your toe into something og that ilk? stick to 'dead cells" and 'hades.' this one is just too repetitive and with little variety to engaging gameplay. the story is, however, a step ahead of the rest.. and is outstanding. it's a decent 7/10 game.
By the looks of it I get why there’s such a gap between your review and the comments. I’ve played a lot of game that have this style and a lot of them get old, mostly after playing Moonlighter and Hades which just sent the standard to the sky. And this game doesn’t look that unique, it has a lot of detail and that is lovely, but yeah the mechanics look more than uninspired. Tho I love seeing you guys enjoy this game so much, whenever I have spare money I’ll try it and come back
You will die A LOT in this game. The success of each dungeon is based on the random power ups you get in each area. You will not be able to complete an area without them. I am on the 2nd dungeon and unless I get Jin's potion and the invulnerability shields that explodes 98% chance I will die.

@@jorgedutra5891 I've been having a blast with some of these games too. I played some of Bloodstained, Dead Cells, Hollow Knight and even got into some other smaller indie type games like Bad North. Finding the games that are co-op so I can play with my daughter and now I think we're gonna try Children of Morta
This game is great. I like it even more than Dead Cells which is another must play game.
Agreed and agreed
Here here...finding hard to enjoy dead cells after Children of Morta
Holy fuck. I'm a huge Dead Cells lover. You are making me seriously consider grabbing this Children of Morta sale.
I couldn't get into Dead Cells. The map and everything changing after I died confused the hell out of me.
@@vrASMR180 that's the point. The map and ablities/weapons you come across dead cells is random every time. That's why it's a roguelike
Meh, one low review among a sea of positive reviews is to be expected. The consensus is that the games a blast, but not perfect, good review though.
I bought this game because I’d heard some good things about it and it was on sale. The first two runs I was like, “I’m just kiting monsters around, this is boring.” A few runs later I was hooked. This game isn’t Hades level when it comes to progression but it’s very close. A fantastic game with charming graphics and wonderful voice work.
Easy review to ignore. It’s like they played the first world only lol. Plenty of enemy variety and I’ve got plenty of different equipment. Not bored yet!
Yeah, I have no idea what he's talking about
Ahhh, dang, looked good but the cons you highlighted would make me get bored of it rather quickly I think. Good informative review!
I dont realy understand why they dont take theire time and make a big variety of enemies and enemy abilitys and a big variety of weapons or skills and customization you can get when they already obviously put in SOOO MUTCH time and love to make it look that gorgous.
@@fisch4638 probably deadlines forced them to release it early.

@@e-lawnmosque7375 there is, but its result is that you cant abuse one character. i bought the game blindly and imo the only con this game has is being too short
@3rksum That's great to hear! Thanks for letting me know that! I'll definitely try it out. :)
I hope you enjoy it! I definitely recommend co op if you can. And if you like games like it, I highly recommend Moonhunters.
most of the stuff he is listing is just characteristics of the ARPG genre
The design makes me think moonlighter
From the same creators I believe.
Its Deeper. The video doesnt do the game justice.
@@JetTheTatGuy Same publisher only (11 bit Studios). Moonlighter was made by Digital Sun, CoM was made by Dead Mage.
From someone who only plays FPS's, this game is absolutely amazing and was a breath of fresh air.
I'm old. We had an Intellevision when I was little. Yes, this game is fun.
I mean, it does have pets now via DLC...
Nice, I too got Legacy of the Wizard vibes on this. Wonder if the Devs played it too? We didn't get to play as the doggy! This was a great game though, hope we see more from this team.
Great game, the only issue I found was the load screen lagging when giving end of level stats.
Been having a blast with the game ! Don't let this deter you from buying the game, it's really great fun.
Man how weird, there's so many untrue things said in this review, god damn.

Game's amazing.
This game is better than 90 percent of the triple A games available.
This is the review I wanted. I've been looking around for someone to tell me if the dungeons and gameplay are repetitive. Here it is!
It's not something you could figure out by playing unless you play for a while so I'm glad I don't have to buy the game and play it for 1:59 to make a decision.
He outright lied about this game, it's fantastic and everything he said was false. Read my comment on the video, I go into detail. Buy this game.
Each region has little side challenges/rooms/puzzles that can unlock collectibles for your house or upgradable aspects and so on, I have been re playing areas over and over to get more gold, xp, and unlock all the Little fun things and subplots. There are even little library's with world lore! I play with my wife too and she doesn't game but she loves this one.
@@Saturn2888 Only the first region is a cave, which each area skinned differently with new enemies. The second area is a vastly different desert/labyrinth with new traps and enemies, he simply lied about gameplay variety.
Can I skip the storyline parts?
Been playing this one for a while and I gotta say I disagree with this review, thanks for the content but people do yourself a favor and check this game out
Really enjoying the game. Different characters = different play styles. There's a family leveling system of passive abilities that encourages you to switch it up. Critique is all over the place. Some love the combat and leveling while the story is meh, this is one of the few that thinks opposite. Bottom line is that it's well worth $20 if you even have a vague idea of what kind of game it is.
the first iranian game that is being taken serious
Most AAA games wish they had as much charisma as this game. It's definitely a buy in my books.
Lol, people giving up the game Just because of a Review. The game is great...u guys should try
Yeah i tried it . Btw the all reviews says that the story is good but the gameplay is just boring . And yes it is
@@wolfydz1239 you right.. only the arche and the swordman are good to play but the rest nah...

This game is now on gamepass
Also, I would have paid $30 (it's $14 now) for this game just based on the 8 hours I've put into it so far. I've loved it so far and I hope the overwhelming number of positive reviews in the comments persuade people to try this game.
The game doesn't feel repetitive, all levels are randomly generated, each enemy has their own mechanics, same as the Bergsons,
and the game forces you to switch characters every once in a while because their fatigue/corruption levels give them debuffs. The graphics are really good and they give the game a beautiful aestethic, paired with the movie-level sound design, it makes for a good experience. The story also makes the game not as linear (won't spoil anything so I can't explain). I recommend this game.
One of the best indies in my opinion last year
My FAVORITE 2d dungeon crawler this generation.
@@D3sdinova I gotta play Hades. That looks amazing!!! West of Dead is also pretty sweet.
i think Escapist isn't being fair to the developers. You'd give high scores to dark souls, but not to this? Dark souls IS attack dodge mechanics. This is no different and the lack of equipment with specialized abilities for certain fights means to choose wisely.
Lol. Did you just compared children of morta to a triple A title with tons of variety in weapons, items, bosses, enemies and stages? Are you serious?
@@sotoskun861 He compared the combat systems, by pointing out that relative simplicity doesn't mean bad. Dark souls is a very simple combat system that's relying on only a few mechanics, but it's still fun, even if you can boil down 90% of the combat to dodging and attacking.
I'm bloody loving it. Couch coop with a mate and we are hooked. Story is excellent and makes you care about each character. Good fun when you start really nailing tactics together between the family
he did mention that it was a far better experience on couch co-op.
Having friends must be nice
The ranged daughter is awesome and easiest to play but variety is the spice of life
I'll be honest, I'm a newb gamer and don't know what "roguelike" even means, and dying initially was a downer, but death isn't too punitive and I got over it.
If I had to throw in my review:
The game is great, but:
-It's hard to look at at times
-It feels like there should be more custom info about relics, kinda like Hades or Undermine describes every single thing that you get.
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. You can adopt a dog. 10/10
I wonder what he was comparing this game too, he seems to have a bias hate towards it.
I like the idea of the familly
They portray the family in a great way. It adds a layer of wholesomeness that enhances an already great game.
Person who is not an emotional and artistic soul should not talk about this game. Play it,be thankfull you had the chance to experience something like this in your shallow life, and go on.
They will update the game with more dungeons, items, abilities, enemies, and online co-op in feature updates.
The game is on sale for almost 9 dollars on ps
Strongly disagree with “the story is all that sticks out”
Literally loved everything about this game on par with how much i enjoyed hades.
-Family progression mechanic dope af
-different character types unlock as members of the family offer different play styles.

How to obtain the Demo ?

I love the game. The review was totally unfair.
This review is wrong. This game is great.
so basically you are saying it is good if you play with with someone but repetitive when playing alone.
I've seldom seen a review I agree so little with.
Morta is a great roguelike, up there with Gungeon and Isaac for me.
High praise indeed, Gungeon is one of my fave games of all time.
CoM is 8 quid for complete edition so I think I’m gonna get it, thanks
I disagree strongly. I think you bring up some valid points, yes but it's incredibly fun to use strategy to defeat enemies and navigate around new traps. Each of the 3 main sections of the game share enemies but have several unique to them.
I couldn't be happier with the couch co-op but I know I would love playing this on my own. The story is engaging and I recommend everyone to take 3 mintues between each level to read one thing from the lore sections. There's one for each character and the places you go. It definitely adds a little extra.
You'd know that this reviewer is an enemy of the people when you see the whole comment section go against him.
Was online co op ever added?
Good review. Too bad the game is boring. But the story is interesting. Mana spark is a way better rouglite when it comes to gameplay.
This is not a "Rogue-like".
Tbh... I played this game but I found both the plot and gameplay pretty boring
Super disagree with this review... my 5 year old and I are enjoying the simplicity of the game. Great entry title for new gamers and great for old school gamers who can value this type of modernized pixelated indie coach co-op. Reminds me of why I also fell in love with Diablo just very trimmed down.
good review, as always. great format guys
The art/graphic style reminds me of Crossing Souls.
He has to work for IGN because this game is pretty good..
Just bought it for $6.99 on iPhone. Looks fun
All you got to say is the game is roguelike to know that it's complete shit and should be avoided at all costs. What an easy way to ruin a game.
BULLSHIT Review, the game is superb, thanks to gamepass i could try it out and after 5 minutes i was in love.
really? I loved this game would probably give it a 9/10
I don't know why but I especially liked the combat, I like it so much I'd make a game with a very similar one
it's a fine game... just not the INCREDIBLE GAME that the comment section will try to convince you as.
Bad review, even three years later it's aged like milk
Lmao, this game is so fuckin easy
Are you crazy? This game is fantastic!!!
