I lived just down the street from where you pulled into UMM. I went to UMM in the 90s. My first semester I lived in Sennett Hall, but the rest of my time at UMM I lived in the house right next to Dublin St Apartments. Actually the owner of Dublin St Apts also owned that house. Heck of a nice landlord. I had financial troubles one month and couldn't pay that month's rent. He let me slide!! Never, ever met a landlord like that before or since. Met a lot of good folks in Machias. Not just other students. Some of the best folks and good friends were local people I met and hung out with. I could see myself going back there to retire one day.
We have a Camp in Northfield that is just north of Machias on 192. Great memories of this part of Maine. In the 1970s we drove from our home in Rockland to our Camp. We stopped in Machias and it was starting to snow so my Dad went into a Convenience store to buy some food just in case we got snowed in. He asked me if I wanted Soda. I said yes. I waited in the Truck. He came out with two bags of Groceries. As we unpacked the Groceries at the camp I looked at the Soda. It was Moxie!!! Wow. I didn't like that!! The next day we woke up and it had snowed all night so we were trapped. I drank the Moxie (Yech)
