The dogs barking outside in reaction to the sound of the gunshots was a nice touch. So often, TV shows and movies present scenes of violence as if they happen in a vacuum.
True that. I know The Wire gets enough praise as is, but something overlooked is the awesome background voices and feedback going on regarding what the audience is seeing on screen. Because you're right, unless they're in the damn desert in the middle of the night, there's always more going on outside the direct scene. Sound design is so huge but often not consciously noticed
This is my favorite scene in the entire episode. Raylan's "that's why I love her" to Winona, Winona giving the bad guys some guff despite being terrified (Natalie Zea is TERRIFIC in this scene), and the two of them working together to take the bad guys down. Even the main bad guy is charming in his own way.
"That's why I love her." I theorized that Raylan was a lot more like his dad than he realized, but he wasn't as completely unhinged as Arlo was. Arlo came off as more blunt. Raylan was more precise and focused when you set him off. This finale was about putting that on full display. He loved Winona, but not enough to leave the job for her. There's a question that Boyd puts to Raylan which is never verbalized but the answer given is pretty chilling. "I wonder what it is that you tell yourself at night that lets you go to sleep thinking you're the good guy." Raylan said nothing in response, cause he knew what was about to transpire.
@@LenGott8345 Yes, true. Winona actually calls it in Season 3 when she recalls how he went out of his way to make some poker night by spending an entire weekend tracking down a fugitive. He couldn't prioritize his marriage in the same way. No doubt Raylan was madly in love with Winona. But his job was who he was and the only thing he truly felt like he was good at. Unfortunately, it made him lose the things that matter.
@@KitK_1122 Nathalie Zea who plays Winona also plays the ex-girlfriend of Will Ferrell's police detective character Allen Gamble in The Other Guys. Before entering the police force as a forensic accountant Gamble was a pimp called Gator. It's a running joke in the movie that Gamble/Gator is obscenely popular with hot ladies, while they hardly give Gamble's partner played by Mark Wahlberg a look.
The guy not only got himself and his men killed, but also his boss. If he hadn't forced the issue and kept running his mouth, he wouldn't have backed Raylen into a corner where Raylen knew that he had to let Sammy Tonin take out Nicky. That said, the "I'm suspended" line makes for great bookends both here at the house and at the airstrip.
The look Raylan gives the chief thug at 2:01 is a death sentence with no earthly appeal. The creep is looking straight down into his own grave but can't see it. By 3:15 he can but by then it's too late.
For two people who do seriously come as advertised, Winona and Raylan always gave each other way too hard a time about their behavior - especially Winona.
That was the problem, they know each other so well and can anticipate the others next move. It's a true 'can't live with them, can't live without them' kind of relationship. Love it.
The worst thing you could do to Raylan Given is mess with Winona. He won't just destroy you but every single person you're associated with and he'll make you watch. Total badass and a romantic LOL
@@jotarokujo5132They’re on Nicky’s hit list. And once he notifies his multiple criminal contacts they’ll be on their lists as well. It’d make living a normal life under their names impossible.
How many times in this show has the bad guys held someone hostage and Raylan just goes and kills them all and saves the hostage anyway? Kind of makes it seem like they're always bluffing
A hostage taker points the gun at a person that (usually, not this time) is not gonna shoot. While that seems to give him power, it also puts him in a weak position vis-à-vis the gun(s) pointed at him. Taking a hostage is always a bluff in the sense that shooting said hostage will most likely also lead to your death.

Still one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. The head bad guy in this scene (I don't think he's ever named) is so good and well-acted.
Everyone was great in this show, but I agree, I love this scene. Raylan is so bad ass
His name was Dominic, played by Troy Ruptash. He also played Don's doomed CO in Mad Men.

All they had to do is listen to Winona and leave before Raylan got there. Now everyone’s dead.

Best scene in the series.
Atta girl! 👍🏻
Winona is a smokeshow. Raylan fumbled so hard.
The value of a bar of gold doesn't change the chemistry of the man holding it.

In this case, Raylan goes way beyond that though. He not only kills all these guys but then makes sure the top thug, Nicky Augustine, is executed too.

The second he mentioned killing the baby, that look should have told them that they were going to die.
