In this video I show you how to properly map the knobs or faders on your midi keyboard to any Ableton device or third-party plugins. I’ve searched everywhere for a video like this, but never found it. This video will show you how to map the knobs on your midi keyboard to any virtual instrument or effects plugin in Ableton Live. This works for ANY keyboard. I show you how to set your keyboard, test out the knobs, and also how to create a user remote script (midi remote script) so that your keyboard will always control Ableton devices. This is how the world should be - simple, fun, and loving…but I digress. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below. Make the music you love!

Could you do a video for the Arturia Keystep?
Can we connect Yamaha e243 keyboard to ableton?!?
Is it will works?
does Ableton 11 open up the new 8 Macro Knobs too? And can you add just Knob 9 to 16?
@@SanderVerstraten Just tried with Live 11: I added Encoder9 and Encoder10 to UserConfiguration.txt, but it doesn't work. Maybe in a future update, but I wouldn't bet on it: UserConfiguration.txt is very limited and outdated.
Thanks sir. But i am fed up with metropolis ark 4. I can't configure the knobs
i honestly don't know what i'd do without you man. you are one of very few people that can teach in a way that is easy to understand. everyone else teaches like we should already know all about it which is baffling
Thank you so much Sanjay! You keep hitting the point of knowledge I'm lacking in. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Tim!
No sir. Thank you. Lol
It’s amazing to hear the different music you come up with each time! I felt like I was in a VR Transportal Sci-fi adventure where only good things happen! Love!!!!
Actually I thought the same - a pictured a video game from the 90s
Oh maaaaaan thank you so much! Was trying to map controls for Omnisphere and that was such a pain in the ass, they kept wiggling in an out, working and not working, even though I tried all the sequences of configuration! And here comes he (you!), the angel from the gray Ableton skies
4 years later and this video is still helping us out, thanks!
God bless RUclips for making possible that people like you can share awesome stuffs!! Man I have an Alesis vi61 and this was just what I needed. Tired of MIDI mapping all the time. THANK YOU
I'm definitely subscribing to your channel too!
Thanks Antoine! I’m glad I could help you 😊
This video suddenly became top of my saved/watch later list. Thank you! I'm using an Arturia Keylab MkII 61 with Ableton Live 11 - as a live performer for a couple of years now . I learned that I've been mapping the Korg Triton, and Roland XV3080 VSTs incorrectly since I watched this. LIfesaver. Cheers to your content, Sanjay!
Great video, clear instructions and perfect background music 😎 10/10
Sanjay, you are a true lifesaver. I was trying so hard to figure out how to assign the cc controls on my Akai MPK88 to my third party software instruments. Then I found this video and it all became clear and simple. Thank you so much. You are awesome. 🙏
I'm currently utilizing this feature through my Yamaha PSR-S775. At first, I was disappointed that I do not have a dedicated MIDI controller . I'm glad that I can still use the digital keyboard to assign keys and control the plugins on Ableton.... I do miss not having knobs though.
This video solved my problem. Thank you so much man 🙏❤️
I’m so glad!!! I couldn’t find a complete video like this anywhere!
@@SanjayC yes you're right
Sanjay C ,complete?? You mean.....
KOMPLETE
Lol
Was searching for this for so long ! Absolutly essential ! Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
never comment on things like this but you've made this tutorial perfectly and to the point
smashed it!
Thank you T E! :-D
I’ve got an Akai MPC249 and this could be the most valuable bit of information I’ve learnt. I’ve struggled to find mapping tutorials, thanks very much 🤜🏽👈🏽
Nice!! So happy that it worked for you!
Really good information here, especially on saving custom maps for 3rd party VST's... Much appreciated man!
Thanks!
this channel is my fav to learn about music
thank you sanjay sir !
Breakdowns like this is why you're the GOAT, thx Sanjay!
Your videos are so well edited, really nice work man!!!
Thanks, Gregor!
Super helpful video, thank you. Been trying to sort this for ages and never found a way that Ableton would reliably save midi mappings for my Launchkey - but this is really quick and works - thanks!
THANK YOU!!! this was amazingggg. I had to do the custom script and would've never figured that out without this video to map my encoders. thank you so much!!
Digging, digging, digging and learning more and more. Just awesome, every day. GS
Great tutorial, Sanjay C, with step by step instructions. Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you! I've been struggling with assigning Pigments knobs in Ableton and this is exactly what i needed
Sweet! So happy to hear this worked for you!
Thanks a lot for this ... I don't think we've given the background music enough juice
you are the best. Saw the whole macro scripting tutorial, just because your tutorials are so great
Ableton looks interesting. Right now I'm sticking to fl studio and Studio One. I'm just more comfy there. My MPK finally arrived and I'm playing around with it first. Learning the setup and all that stuff.
Hybrid Keys is AMAZING!!!!! Thank you again.
Yeah Hybrid Keys is so good! Hey how is FL with midi keyboard control!
@@SanjayC it's pretty straightforward. The setup is what I needed one tutorial for that I found pretty easily. It gives the option to just map my mac pad in fl to the drum pad on my midi controller. SO much easier than having to individually map notes to the pad. I had it done in a few seconds.
Been waiting for this video for some time now. My NI M32 does not control ableton
Let me know if it works for you
Hey man I have an NI M32 and I can't figure it out. When I open MIDI mapping, click on a piano knob for example, and then try and turn the knob on the MIDI, nothing happens. Did you figure out how to use it?? Please help me lmao
Wow Sanjay, this is amazing, these tips. I have been looking around for this type of info for quite a while. I have several new, older units and serum. The ability to remap and map controls is essential. Thanks...
Sanjay you are the man! I have been struggling to find this info. Thank you!!
Thank you!!! I just subscribed, keep up the great work sir! You're a life saver for us just starting a music production hobby!
Thanks Karl!! Happy I can help!
Thanks for this VERRRY usefull video. You have a pretty nice English pronanciation, what I like very much. Needless to say, you explaining greatly. You just got a new subscriber. I'll follow your videos. Thanks again.
Dude. Seriously helpful video. Thank you!
YAY! Glad to hear that!
Thanks, Sanjay! Super helpful for my midi fighter twister. :)
Nice!
Thank you !! ive been struggling couple of hours looking for solution to not seeing my control surface and thanks to you i was able to make my own one...
Dude!! Your so freakn useful!! I bearly subscribed and I love your channel! It's great, with great information and great help.
KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK. your doing a great job with taking your time, much respect for your time man.
I really appreciate that. So glad you find my videos useful
This was just what I needed to get this Keylab mkII under a little more control. It's tricky as it seem to use 'KeyLab 49 mkII (port 2)' for the DAW mode and the other connection -- 'KeyLab 49 mkII' -- for user mode. You (we) need to map the knobs in a User Mode so as to have the Pans and such still work in DAW mode. Have to switch modes, and set up that user configuration file with the KeyLab 49 mkII device -- not the Port 2 version. Thank you a ton for this. Would have taken a lot longer to figure this out.
Glad to hear that you got it to work for you!
Thank you, Jim! :)
The midi mapping feature in Ableton is fantastic !!
How does it compare to other Daws?
@@SanjayC I use cubase mainly. It let's you midi learn vst quick controls. You can save them as presets and recall in any project any track. Any amount of quick controls and as much presets as you want. So you can have say 4 sets of preset quick controls. Load serum on 4 tracks and use a different midi mapping preset on all 4. I use komplete kontrol. Haven't tried with any other controller. But there is no midi button like in Ableton's home screen allowing midi mapping of anything highlighted on the screen as far as I know. I could be wrong. But that's why Noisa and Guiseppi ottiviani compose in cubase but perform live with Ableton.
Thank you Man! The greatest explanation I've ever heard
Thanks so much. Glad it helped you out! :-)
This is a brilliant video, thank you! I had this issue a month or so ago and it took a weekend of Google searching to find an answer and even then it took a while to figure out the answer! If only I'd found your video first, I'd have been sorted in 10 minutes rather than a whole weekend! Brilliant video, perfect for the solution! :) THANK YOU!
Glad it helped! I too searched for a long time and then I thought I should make a video about it to help people out.
Honesty, thank you I have the Aturia mini-lab this will help so much!!
Please can you give me advice. I cannot install my controllers in Ableton. But my different recording software working with my controlles. I use my Devine EZ-Creator Fade and also my Devine EZ-Creator Pad controller. How I can find it way with works my conrollers with Ableton ?
Finally! Someone made this video! And it works!!!!!
Awesome!!!
Professor Sanjay! You are brilliant! I was going nuts with Irig IO 25 Keys Midi keyboard controller!
Awesome thanks. I noticed that you don't actually have to create a group to control the parameters, you can stop right after setting up the configure button on serum. Also, it seems that the blue hand indicates that the vst is responding to the controller.
THANK YOU! I feel so powerful now!
Yes feel the power from your mini midi keyboards!
Thank you so much Sanjay! This helped!!
Hi Sanjay, I enjoy your channel and your videos on Keyboard Controllers and Audio interfaces. You do a very good job of explaining it all. Last month (03/02/22) I bought an Alesis V25 keyboard controller as it was on sale @ Guitar Center for $59.00 which was too good for me to ignore. Anyway just wanted to let you know that my keyboard has the latest firmware version and now it automatically controls some parameters in Ableton. I opened up Ableton & I selected the Grand Piano and it now automatically controls the first horizontal line of parameters automatically. The Firmware version I have is 1.0.0.9 and it is current according to the firmware editor that I got with the keyboard. Anyway just wanted to say hi and let you know that the latest Alesis V25 keyboard controllers being sold now do control some parameters in Ableton automatically. Again thank you for your channel and for all your informative videos.
Oh my gosh! You’ve saved me a ton of time and nerves 😂😂😂 thank you 🙏🏻
Sanjay , Thank You for this informative video well done and super helpful, been trying figure this out for years !! and this video is simply explained and to the Point .. super thanks ,Peace and Great Success in all ventures and look forward all info, videos Cheers!
Thank you, Rene! So glad it helped you out! :-D
Thank you so much! I did have to right click each parameter and select which macro to assign it to after your last step. I’m using live 9 on a PC windows 10 64bit. Hope the input is useful!
Gratitude 🤝🏾...
Great video. Informative, clear explanation, and well produced. Thanks!
Thanks Haro82!
God, i was looking for this instruction last week, now, i know how to make it real, thanks, master!
Awesome! Glad you found me!
@@SanjayC do you have a video about HZ, and the importance of the EQ? thanks!
Thank you, for the amazing step by step it was helpful, can you please help where to listen to the background music?
Hi DJ Khunji, thanks much. I create the background music for all my videos, but I usually don't post it anywhere :-/ Some pieces go on www.soundcloud.com/SanjayC
Sanjay C you are awesome, thank you very much again
Very useful video SanjayC! Thank you 🙏
Thanks!
This is a game changer cheers man! Had some real issues with the MINILAB 2.. Nice one!
Wow I was stressing about the ableton device control on my arturia Keylab mkii, hey can I do this for only one user 2 only ? Leaving user 1 intouched ?
Meant untouched
Wow, I had no idea about doing any of this besides basic assignment of parameters! I'm definitely going to be doing this with my mpk mini
Try it out and let me know how it works.
@@SanjayC sounds good!
@@SanjayC Tried it out and really think this is something ive been missing for a long time!
Great! Glad it worked for you! Yeah, this is a game changer, I think!
@@SanjayC I always thought I'd have to buy a controller for that brand to control the plugin 😂
Thank you so much for making a great video on midi setup! I can't wait to get home and try this out now.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent Sanjay, thanks. As I go along my journey in search of beats I'm finding that a huge number of 'help' videos are a disappointing waste of time and frequently contain incorrect or incomplete info. It's a breathe of fresh air to find work like yours which "does what it says on the tin" (that's an old ad campaign slogan from the UK). Anyway, thanks for an informative and easy to follow clip. Cheers
Hi Paul! Thanks for the positive feedback. Getting these instructions right took some time, so I appreciate you taking the time to write to me :-)
Cool, Now i know for future MIDI keybords, IM thinking to watch your best MIDI keyboards again.
Yeah please do ! :-D
Great video, as always! Can u make a tutorial about komplete kontrol software?
Done! ruclips.net/video/3efTO3NvBTc/видео.html
Sanjay C Damn boy he quick, that’s a quick ass boy
nice video, Sanjay! i found myself having quite a difficult time setting up my old reliable Edirol PCR-500 but i found out that you have to specify the channel that your midi cc's are coming from and set it as a global channel in order to get ableton recognizing it. another add: global channel goes from -1 to 15 but midi keyboards are 0 - 16. that said, if you want your global channel to be on the same page as your keyboard, you gonna have to set it down one number. Ex: cc's coming from channel 3, set the global channel as 2. i don't know a lot about midi technology so maybe this can be pretty standard but anyway, if you having a similar problem, hope that helps. (sorry for bad english)
Man you're fantastic ...
I f you please, I need an episode for going Live performance with my midi controller Alesis V25..
Thanks so much ...
Thanks, Michael!
Broo this was the video I needed thank you!
god bless this man 🙏🏽

Nice complete explanation. Thanks for the help
Thanks!!
@@SanjayC hey! the link of location of knobs preferences doesn't work on my mac. Is there a possibility that the folders has different name on my computer?
This was great help. Thank you. I see you’re using an Akai at the beginning. Different one one at the end. What’s your top midi keyboard suggestion?
Thank you very much, now busy programming my Alesis VI61.
Excellent! I love to hear that. You're going to love the new control you have!
You are the best, very helpful video!
Happy to hear that!
Wow I didn’t realize I needed that. Awesome
Super helpful video, thank you!
You're welcome :-)
I am using the MiniLab Mk2 which is supposed to be preset through Shift and Pad 8. Yet it did not work and I have to reset the controls, is there a faster way or should I follow this and remake the mappings
Great video Sanjay! I have a Nektar Panorama P6 that I'm trying to map out by following your guidance. One time it placed the CC numbers over the knobs (like your video shows) and the MIDI light flashed as I was mapping the connections. But I was never able to get any sound to play. I always powered up the keyboard first and then Ableton - the keyboard shows 1-Ableton1 as the DAW. Sometimes the MIDI light blinks once but then it quits - it's like I lost a connection, but everything is wired the same and I haven't made any other changes. I'm using Ableton Live 10. I was using Reaper as my DAW before and the process to connect the Nektar was very finicky, and sometimes they wouldn't stay connected but for the most part it worked fine. I switched to Ableton because the church is having everyone record their playing against the backing tracks provided (in Ableton). I'm a new bass player and have only dabbled with recording stuff in the past. I'm using a Predator PC with i-7-7700 CPU, 32 GB ram, with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 video, 1 - 4 TB and ! 2 TB HDD. I'm old and forgetful so I have to watch the videos over and over again, but I was a Computer Scientist back when I worked. But after I had many Electroconvulsive therapy treatments - my short term memory doesn't function so well and I also can't remember some things from before either. Anyway, thanks again for your great work.
Thanks! Helped me alot, with my keystep37, because it has not script for ableton
Strangely enough, it was my MPK Mini MK2 knobs that weren't auto mapping (even with everything correct in midi preferences). However, this worked perfectly! Thanks Sanjay.
Awesome to hear that!
Thank you, that's all I can say Sanjay, you're amazing.
You are a life-saver! Thank you very much
I don't understand why the initial setup is so difficult that I have to scour the internet for guides and videos on how to do it. I'm glad you've picked up the ball here. Thank you :-) But, using Ableton Live Lite 11 on a Mac (with an Alesis V49), I do not have the path you referred to @3:00. I do have Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences, but there is no Ableton in there.
I can find Macintosh HD > Users > my name > Music > Ableton, but inside is only Factory Packs, Live Recordings, and User Library.
Also, under Ableton Preferences - MIDI, input is Alesis V49 (Out) or Alesis V49 (EDITOR Out)?
I've had this keyboard for two years and have been unable to use it. Finally I'm trying to set it up (very slowly), and I did just order an Arturia MiniLab 3 at largely your suggestion (not using your link as I'm in Japan). Your guide for that decision was great.
For this initial set up, though, there must be a better way. I didn't even know to download the Alesis V49 Editor until I watched "Alesis V49 Setup" by Cip's Techi Tips. I get a little bit here and a little bit there, and still it only halfway works - sometimes. Is there a more comprehensive source on setting up Alesis V-series devices with Ableton Live Lite, MainStage, Logic Pro, and GarageBand (Mac and iPad)? Even Support at Alesis' own website doesn't make any of this obvious.
Thank you for making it seem easy!
Hi Sanjay, great video! I was thinking...what about setting up the same knobs to use on two different VST plug ins in the same session...How shall I do that? by using MCC?
Seriously u r helping out lot of freshs out dere gr8 video..
Thanks!
Thanks Sanjay! I was able to create a user script for my KeyLab 61 mkII that makes the 8 macro controls work. (It already supports Analog Lab and Ableton controls, but for some reason doesn't support the usual macros for non-Arturia instruments.)
Check the macros for your other instruments - you may have set them to follow other midi ccs. So you're going to need to redo those macros. Take some time to do it now for long term benefits :-)
This was very helpful! Great video.
Dayum mann you're amazing just the video I need to fix my problems
Thank you Abhishek!
Thank you so much Sanjay! I'm yet to try this but this is a life savior.Although I have a doubt. How does the controller respond when we got two instances of the same plugin groups or different plugin group? Thank you!
Heyy..thanks again for helping me ...I had the exact same problem with Ableton live 10..
Awesome! Glad I could help, Zubi69!
Damn good video bro.
Well done man.

@@SanjayC
That's all you my brotha. ;)
Props.
I can't find the 'InputName' or 'OutputName' commands anymore in the text file in live 11. Am i the only one or is there any fix yet?
Hey Sanjay, please make this same video for Cubase LE.
Cubase users like me are gonna Love it.
Great video! &
Thanks in advance.
I don't have Cubase...but do you have the same problem there?
Thanks you!!! This was becoming endlessly frustrating. Grouping the crucial step that eluded me..
Haha! Sometimes that’s all it takes! 👍🏼
Now if only Live would stop crashing I could find lasting peace. I can’t even use Serum and Kontakt just killed my session. I think I need a better computer.
Thanks a lot! Now I can change parameters in Analog Lab with my Akai MPK mini mk3. However I couldn't find a way how to work with endless encoders because knobs does not match the next presets encoder value and this leads to huge jumps in parameters. So basically it works as regular knob.
Sanjay you're the best!
This video was great man!
thank you! it worked as a charm
Thanks a lot, extremely helpful
You’re welcome
I think the hardest part was finding that folder but this completely solved my problem!
Was my location wrong? Where did you find it?
What an amazing video. Many thanks.
Thanks!!
Thanks master Sanjay c great job !!!!!!
