- This is one of the coolest trams in the world! The tram actually had a much longer route than it did 10 years ago. Today, it begins at Carioca, a 5 minute walk from the Metro station.
The Santa Teresa Tram in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is an extremely unique railway, which winds its way up a hill in an eclectic neighborhood. The tram begins at Carioca Station (Estação Carioca) in the Lapa neighborhood and ends at the top of the hill at Dois Irmãos. The tram used to connect all the way to the Trem do Corcovado, Rack Railway to the Christ the Redeemer Statue (Cristo Redentor).

@@Luke_Starkenburg I'm sorry for what happened. Violence, robberies and assaults are everywhere. What makes Brazil more unpleasant is how banal it has become and people care little. The beauty of innocence and the ingenuity of the people and art is gone. Unfortunately I was robbed when I lived in Dublin, Ireland. A city also very problematic with numerous drug users.
I am planning to go to Asia, Taiwan. Owner of a strong popular culture and does not seem to me a place where the violence is natural.
Congratulations on the video and the channel. Continue with the train videos. Asia has magnificent modern trains. I love the japanese and chinese trains very much.

Lol. Brazil is not simple at all. It is actually the 8th biggest economy in the World. Second in America and 4th in the Western World. There is a lot of poverty there but also a lot of richness as well. Just like China.
Santa Teresa is the best place in Rio, the only place I still can't live was there. I miss my Rio De Janeiro

Thanks a lot for filming and posting! Although what's left of the S. Teresa tram after modernization and route cuts is only a pale disneylandish shimmer of what it was before, it is still quite impressive.

Qdo criança, nos anos 50 e 60, morei em Santa Teresa, adorava qdo meus pais pegavam o bondinho.
Só que os bondinhos não eram como estes. Pegava na estação da Carioca e soltava em frente ao Hospital 4o Centenário. Depois que anos atrás um deles descarrilou e matou pessoas, o GOVERNO reformou alguns e muitos ainda estão jogados nos fundos da garagem para retirar peças.
Tenho muitas saudades daquele tempo 😭😭😭😭.
Até hoje não entendo como morei 3 anos no RJ e não andei nesse bonde kkk

Great! I love this tram! Wow! At 6:25 happened a thing! Yeah... it happens sometimes! I remember the time when there were trolleybus lines in Santos, and from time to time the cables would come loose, and the driver would come down to put it back in place. I forgot to tell you, Luke, that there is also a historic tram line in the center of Santos. But unfortunately it doesn't compare to Santa Tereza. It is a short walk through the center of Santos, in the middle of traffic, but passing through the historic center. Santos was one of the first settlements in Brazil.
I have heard about the tram in Santos. I would like to ride it when I visit someday. Thanks for all the comments!

Its hard work making a video like this. In my South America playlist you can see it in 1999, before the cars ere renovated. I was too scared to get off and shoot, having just fended off a group of kids who tried to pull off my back pack under the viaduct. About 30 seconds earlier I met an also lost europen couple, so I think their presence was the only thing that saved me that day. In two weeks in Rio and Sao Paulo that was me only trouble.
Under the viaduct, I was too scared to take out my bigger camera so I kept it hidden in my backpack. There were several places in Rio and Sao Paulo where I didn't feel safe using my camera and just used my iPhone instead. (Actually, on my first day in Brazil, in Sao Paulo, my friend and I both had our phones pickpocketed. The next day we bought a new phone and shared it for the rest of the trip. We kept the phone and wallets in the backpack from then on when in a crowd.)
@@Luke_Starkenburg Yes it's too bad that Rio has such a problem with street crime. Once considered one of the most desirable cities in the World in which to live but that stopped many years ago. I know a few people who have left the city recently because of crime. Still a fascinating place to visit and its location is probably the most spectacular in the World.
I've been lucky enough to visit Brazil and Rio three times in 20 odd years. It has improved and the Metro is still spotless. The only trouble I had was with a drunken off duty detective. The people were very friendly. I actually dropped 300 Reals on the street in Copacabana...a homeless man ran up and returned it to me! He wouldn't accept a tip/reward. Priceless!

Thanks for your visit, I'm sorry to hear that you struggled with the violence in Rio. The situation here is getting worse everyday but fortunately there are still beautiful places to see. Also, I can see your dedication, you spent a lot of time recording the bondinho and I know that they don't appear very oftenly. I hope you had an overall good experience, come back when Brazil is in a more stable economic situation, I'm sure you'll be able to do much more and will have a better time here.

Ah que graça, eu sou paulistano e não sabia desses bondes no Rio! O centro de São Paulo é lindo, mas precisa passar por um paisagismo, ter fiscalização contra vandalismo e acho que seria viável que bloqueassem o acesso de automóveis e ônibus ao triângulo paulista e criassem uma conexão à bondes. Trouxessem de volta os paralelepípedos que estão enterrados por asfalto. Quem sabe um dia!
Eu realmente amo a Estação Luz, mas a área ao redor é ruim. Também adoro passear pelo Viaduto Santa Efigênia. A Avenida Paulsta é maravilhosa nos finais de semana, quando não há carros ou ônibus. A atmosfera é tão vibrante e amigável!
I really love Luz Station, but the area around it is bad. I also love walking around Viaduto Santa Efigênia. Avenue Paulsta is wonderful on weekends when there are no cars or buses. The atmosphere is so vibrant and friendly!

Great video. I need some tips on editing videos like this! I have the footage, and I would also add some of my own running commentary but I don’t know how to edit videos and make them enjoyable like yours yet. Thanks Luke.
Editing takes me a really long time. Its worth it though. I sometimes would like to do a voice over on my videos but I don't like my voice and don't have professional microphones. Adding text at the bottom of the screen is easy for me, although I struggle with wording sometimes.

Sao paulo tinha 980 km de trilhos de bonde .que o maldito figueiredo ferraz destruiu .era so modernizalos e fazer as paradas desviando os onibuz.tinhamos bonde penha lapa .sta amaro etc uma pena
Aqui no Rio tinha uma grande rede de trilhos de bonde também, se não me engano, era maior que a de São Paulo... Infelizmente acabaram com tudo, inclusive com os trólebus, que nunca vingaram por aqui

@@Luke_Starkenburg São Paulo is way better than it used to be some years ago,is still no heaven but it depends a lot of where you are,but Rio is a warzone,and for being such a big tourism pole,it is the main reason for the bad reputation of the country....
Anyway i refer to places like,Curitiba,Balneário Camboriú,Fortaleza,Porto Alegre.....

Do mesmo jeito que o cartão postal da Inglaterra é Londres, o da França é Paris, o da Itália é Roma...Se fosse só pelas praias e pela formação geográfica outra cidade poderia ser cartão postal. Praia bonita e natureza é o que não falta no país de norte a sul. Agora vcs tem que entender que o RJ tem essa visibilidade toda pq é uma cidade que representou o país por quase 200 anos, uma cidade com uma história rica apesar do presente tenebroso. Enfim lá fora Brasil e RJ são sinônimos, assim como Paris e França são sinônimos pra gente
