When lockdown started i turned to cycling as my means to keep fit and get out of the house. Bikes have changed a lot in the 30-odd years since i last rode! Finding this channel really helped me understand what needed to get the most from my time on the bike, whilst also introducing me to a raft of new 'lockdown friends'! I would love the Garmin head unit as i still dont have one, and it only a matter of time until i drop my phone while trying to check the route out! Keep up the excellent videos

Adding a speaker to my bike setup had been my favorite addition by far. I would like the Garmin as I want to recomend the Bose Microsoundlink as an amazing speaker for bikes. Its got a great punchy sound, straps perfectly on the handlebars and is 100% waterproof (I complely submerged mine when it was playing by falling out a of a kayak and it was fine!) Speakers are less dangourous than headphones and I often listen to podcasts or audiobooks on long tours

I absolutely love the bike. it looks amazing.
I am a 17 year old avid cyclist, who has just funded a second hand bike. At the moment i use komoot with earbuds in to direct and track my cycling trips. I race for my schools HPV (human powered vehicle) team. A garmin head unit would be amazing giving me the freedom to train better, safer cycling with no earbuds in, navigation to go to new places and explore and help during races to see my heartrate and speed. It would honestly mean the world to me.
Thanks so much for this opportunity. Love this series.

Hi Francis, loving the videos. I have been a long-time supporter of the backpacking trips such as Vietnam, and would really like to do something like that one day. I would Love the Garmin as I'm attempting my first ride abroad in the summer to Paris from the UK. The ride will help to raise money for the charities Mind and The Alzheimers Society. Currently, I use Komoot on my phone so it would be nice to have something that shows me where I'm going at all times without having to stop, especially when riding outside the UK.
Keep up the great work with the Channel and Wild.
    Kind regards,
    Will

I love exploring with my bike and getting lost especially here in Cape Town but also far away. Having a GPS allows me to get more lost and then find my way back home while having an absolute blast. Since my Wahoo just stopped working and there is no support (not even for a repair) to get it up and running again, its time to give a Garmin a go. And the 830 looks like it will make exploring such a joy again!
Thanks for your fantastic content Francis! Happy riding!

The Garmin 830 would be an excellent addition to my arsenal of early morning safety/navigation/data collecting/training ride computer set up. Being a father of 3 little kids, working full time, and trying to be the best husband I can, it leaves the wee hours in the morning before the sun comes up for training. My current set up is quite antiquated and a hodge podge of lights, computers, sensors and more. The efficiency that the Garmin 830, paired with the Varia, would be the stuff of legends. Not only will it be the dream training tool, but get me home safely. Thanks for giving one of these away!! Keep Living The Dream (#LTD). Appreciate it!!

I started roadbiking during the pandemic and am loving it. Due to the cost of cycling being quite high and living on a students budget, I currently use my phone to navigate. Having a real headunit would allow me to go further and have more information about my rides which would assist me in becoming a better cyclist.

Hey Francis, been a long term subscriber and you've unspired me to start bikepacking. i was at tour down under when you visied the Rapha club house looking very cooked from the South Aussie Heat. I've just completed my MBA this monring and the plan was to emulate your Vietnam trip as a celebration, but COVID put a stop to that. In two weeks heading out on an Aussie bush bash bike packing trip and just purchased the seatpost extender to make the brand spanking new tailfin fit more comfortably. thank you to you, Daisy and all your friends for inspiring me to get out and get adventurous. The garmin would be a great additon to the setup, regardless keep up the great work!!

Hey Francis, lovely to see you two back on the road again! Spain, the mountains, the coast, everything looks so beautiful, especially on the bike - as I can only imagine, cause I’ve never been to Spain yet.
I’m covering your channel only 3-4 months now! You’re one of the persons that inspired me to get into road cycling but bike packing mainly. I’m riding my Rondo RUUT AL wich is a lovely good and beginner friendly gravel bike.
I’m from the baltic sea in Germany and I only have been on some small day trips yet, because of winter, but I’m planning a full 7 days bike trip through all of Germany this summer, so the Garmin would be super helpful with that!

Love the no rules approach to your bike packing journeys. Tailfin rack + aero bike = no problem. As well as being a road/gravel rider I also MTB and for this reason I think I should win the Garmin 830 giveaway. The only bike computer on the market that comes with new MTB DYNAMICS! Bike Park Wales will never be the same again now I can measure my jump count, jump distance and hang time. And it integrates with all my favourite 3rd party apps like Komoot, Trailforks and Strava.

We have a JBL Clip 3 like that. Long battery life, plenty loud, compact design. We love it.
I'd love to have that Garmin 830. My current old small Garmin does a good job, but I'd like to have the better nav features of a more modern unit. We have some bikepacking and gravel routes around where the nav would be so helpful.

  • @simonrussell734

I was one of the people asking about the Varia + Tailfin combo. I ended up on a different setup to you; I actually bought the Tailfin "seatpost mimic" mount, but it doesn't play that well with the Varia mount, it ends up at a weird angle and it feels like it might just slide off. I think this is mostly down to the design of the Varia mount rather than the Tailfin.
I ended up putting it on one of the Tailfin legs using one of the other rubber fittings that came with the Varia. Wouldn't work well with panniers but it worked okay for me with fork bags as mini panniers. Stayed pretty secure over a six day bikepacking trip with a fair bit of gravel so I'd recommend it. Given it's not the most visible thing down there, I also had a light clipped to the back of the Tailfin.
I wish I was bikepacking in Spain right now!

Frankly, I absolutely have a zero good reasons to be gifted a expensive Garmin head unit. Have one slightly better then average, at least I think so. I ride my bike every day, all seasons in every weather conditions, commuting and doing every thing else someone uses car for. I don't own a car, not planning to, bikes are my way of life. Always wanted to finally have an accurate data of my ridding, and having good navigation would help my everyday life very much, relying on a phone in that role is rather limiting. So, if that qualifies, as an slightly above average reason, I'd relay appreciate! All best on the rest of your trip! And on the last note - missed Chris in the vlogs, very nice to see him!

Thanks for the great videos. I continue to learn a lot from them. They've inspired me to get out on some of my own bikepacking adventures and start to dabble in ultra distance racing. I've discovered I really enjoy it and so I have set my sights on racing the Tour Divide in 2023. A Garmin 830 would be a dream head unit and navigation tool for me on the TD. Garmins base maps are the best out there. And I know it will work. My training involves massive time on the bike so having the ability to add a Varia and have the rear radar is a huge safety bonus for me. Keep up the great videos. Keep inspiring.

I'd very much appreciate the Garmin for one of the reasons you actually mention:
I'm planning myself a bikepacking trip in Germany in a couple of months and I depend on my phone for music, contact and navigation. So a proper head unit would be a nice way to be less dependent on the phone and get the maps and stats more nicely.

I've been watching the channel for years (since the Red Hook Crit videos in 2016!), and great to see the channel grow so much. GARMIN CONTEST: My partner and I are getting more into bike-packing in recent years, and to date, we've been using a combination of phones and paper cue-sheets to plan our routes (and getting lost...a lot). We live in the city, so want to start planning more routes that get us away from cars, and incorporate more trails, gravel tracks and rural roads. We're also aware of our carbon footprint, and the irony of using a car/plane to get to a start of a bike trip. The Garmin GPS would help us chart more complex routes and explore new locations, especially those in our own backyard and that are accessible by train/transit. Help us make our bike-packing dreams a reality!

Hi, the reason i need the Garmin 830 is to participate in an ultra endurance event in next couple of months. In January i didn't join the event because i was hesitate if i go with only using my phone to navigate, it would be less convenient even with a powerbank. This is the event that i've been wanted to do since last year. It would be a dream come true. With this new bike, I'm getting the confidence to go on longer rides exploring the Yorkshire dales. I've signed up for a few bicycle maintenance classes. and have been watching bike packing and bike videos non-stop, and yours especially have inspired me to go out more (your Vietnam series is my personal favourite). I don't have any friends that cycle, and so having the Garmin device would be an amazing tool to help me not get lost! I would also love to be able to track my progress, as getting fitter is a side-goal I have with cycling as well. Hi Francis. I’ve had a Garmin Fenix 2 from 2014-2019 and now a Garmin Instinct since 2019. I have done a couple of bikepacking trips since 2019 (relying on someone else’s Wahoo for navigation) and I’ve participated in a short 50km gravel race in December last year. The race was self-navigated based on a gpx that was supplied by the organizer; that was when I realise that my Garmin Instinct watch only had a limited number of waypoints for gpx and I couldn’t rely it for navigation. I ended up using my smartphone with a gpx viewer for navigation which, as you said, drained the heck of my phone’s battery. A Garmin 830 would greatly benefit so that I can enter more local self-navigating gravel races and not having to rely on friends (for navigation) for bikepacking or audax rides in the future :)

    Francis,
I've been riding for a few years now thanks to you and others like Lawrence and Chris inspiring and motivating me to get out there and slowly it by bit been building up my kit for cycling as and when I can afford it.
I currently however do not have a head unit as of yet so have been riding using my phone and battery packs to do all day rides. I have done a few overnight rides but due to battery I haven't been able to do more than two days so a Garmin would allow me to explore and start doing things like the London to Amsterdam trip I've wanted to do for a while, a trip which I intend to do this to raise funds for some of the hardest working charities close to my heart, these being the respite association and the maytree, both offering respite fothose that need it, and the Garmin will allow a trip like this to be executed smoother. Inspired by you, i also am considering riding the infamous c2c trip on a unfit for purpose bike either a Brompton or a kid's bike, so will inevitably be a multi day trip, which the Garmin will of course assist with.
Francis, your content is fantastic and is part of the reason I get onto my bike each day with a smile on my face to head off, getting slimmer, heathier and happier every time I ride, so cheers for that

Hi Francis, the garmin 830 has a number of amazing features, including navigation and workout plans. Would love to put those features to use to develop my cycling and have more fun out in the road. As always keep up the great work.

Just taken up cycling last year and currently living in Madrid, can say Spain is awesome for it. Even convinced a few mates to ship their bikes over for Sierra Nevada in May. Unreal roads and gravel - funnily enough I'm looking at buying a Garmin 530 so I can get some off-road maps and routes! Enjoy the trip Francis (and Chris!)

Because it'll be perfect for my upcoming LEJOG trip! My first long distance event and I believe the 830 will stop me needing to recharge my phone and stop me getting lost hopefully!

Hi Francis! Thank you for a great video once again. The reason why I'd like to have a Garmin computer, is because I'm now building my dream bike, pinarello gan k, it's taken me nearly a year now to get all the parts I need. But it's nearly finished, only missing a computer :) I'll show you a picture of my finished bike when it's ready AND a new Garmin on it :) thank you!

These last few bikepacking tours have given me the thirst for 1 myself. I’m now planning to ride to and from Lille for the Paris Roubaix.
The 830 would’ve awesome as I lost my old Garmin Touring model and the second hand 820 I replaced it with has terrible battery.
    Cheers mate 👍

Enjoying the content, as ever. Having recently became a new dad, a garmin would help make my rides more structured and less prone to spending hours lost on the country lanes of Essex. It might mean that I actually get our more often without fear of not seeing the family all day 🙂. Enjoy the rest of your trip and keep the videos coming x

Thanks for documenting this bike packing trip as it allows me to dream of how it could be when our Canadian winter ends 🥶. When I can remount on my bike I could record all my data with a new Garmin computer 👍🏻

That Garmin looks sweet! Well for one, who doesn't like full integration for your loved ones to see how slow you would be traveling uphill? Garmin integration (Komoot, live tracking, radar lights) ftw :-)

I'd absolutely love a Garmin 830!!! I've recently been struggling a bit with life in general, and would love any extra motivation to get outdoors on my old mountain bike. Watching these videos has given me the interest to take up cycling again, so far only a few short rides. I'm a bit of a stats geek so I'm sure the extra information a bike computer provides would help keep the momentum going. Thanks for the high quality videos!

Next week i''m starting on cycling. Really excited for it, I'm smarting small, just ordered a Triban RC120 (my budget won't allow for more :D). But still, super excited to adventure through the beautiful roads of Portugal. Of course, with a Garmin would be better, but I'm just happy I can finally do it!

Great video Francis! I have previously been a runner and am still using an old watch to track my cycling activities. I would love to upgrade to a unit meant for cycling for my upcoming bike packing adventures.

Hey Francis, I would love the Garmin 830 as I am new to cycling, I’ve used your channel as a guide to learn about bikepacking. I have saved to get my Bike but need a garmin for it and would be a cost I haven’t budgeted yet. Cheers from the U.S!!! You’re my favorite new channel, it has helped me understand cycling and your bike fit Tuesdays have been explaining what I have struggled to understand by leaning on my own. I have been a Backpacker for quite a while and have taken a chance at this new adventure.

Well, why i should win? I am on my way to loosing more weight this year(I've had surgery last year), and I've have picked up cycling again. I am already planning bigger trips once it warms up here in Switzerland, and getting my gear for bikepacking, and the Garmin would be a perfect addition to my set up!
Real glad to have found your channel, love the off the cuff type of videos you make!they get me really pumped to keep riding and discovering new fun routes.
    Keep doing great work Francis!

Hi Francis, koodos on your amazing channel! I have just recently discovered it and after watching all your Vietnam bikepaking trip it has quicky became one of my favourite bikepacking/bike channels on youtube! Very genuine, that's what I like the most! Anyways I would love to get my hands on that Garmin 830 so in a couple of months time I can ride from London to Turin with a proper route planned out to surprise my misses!

I just moved to a new city and have no idea where I'm going most of the time! I would love to use the Garmin for directions to new places so I don't have to worry about my phone. I am also training for my first ever bike packing trip, so using it to track training progress as well as directions when I finally get out on the big ride would be awesome.
As always great video and I hope you had an amazing trip!

Brilliant feature on your kit. Great to see some fab weather and scenery.
I’ve done some cracking trips myself in the UK with Way of the Roses, Wales north to south and all around the Highlands of Scotland. Currently use Garmin 130 but as I age my eyesight is not what it used to be so would very much appreciate the larger screen of the 830😎😂
Using the Forerunner 245 to support my training for the Cape Wrath Ultra in May. Back on the bike after that…hopefully 😳🤪
Good luck for the rest of the trip 🇪🇸

Just bought myself a new bike, after my old second-hand was unfortunately broken. I would love to compliment it with the Garmin 830! I'm saving for a computer, bike packing bags and a power meter, but the saving takes a bittersweet time. Hope I can enroll from continental Europe (the Netherlands) 🤗

That's an epic bikepacking setup, close to perfect. I'd personally just add a mid-bag in the triangle. But that's me ;)
Would love to get my hands on a new edge 830. Been using my lovely "mini" edge 130 for the last couple years, and still love it. The thing took lots of beatings, even smashed the screen in a mtb crash. But it still goes and gets the data. We're going with the flow - if it ain't totally broken it's somewhat fine. Now that I'm seeing all the specs on the 830 I'd really consider an update..

I'm in to my second year of road biking and your videos have helped me so much. I recently purchased a turbo trainer whilst the weather is poor in the UK, but now the weather is getting (mildly) better a Garmin would be an amazing addition in helping me track and improve my rides. If it would make me go an extra 10-15kph every ride that would be great too! 😁

Why I should win the garmin?
    1. I've been a fan of garmin especially their watch that I got for a birthday present a few years ago and I have been saving up for a bike computer
    2. I love data. I love numbers which makes me go crazy. Numbers help me to see if I'm improving.
    3. Who dosent like free stuff?
I love watching your videos which teaches me how to edit my videos (I just started content creation for cycling as well!)

I could make great use of that Garmin 830 as head unit, GPS, and extend of Screen for my old fenix friend, when doing multi sports mode).
However the best use case for me would be to share route with my partner - so she's also aware what is ahead of us (instead of me lying/pushing - 1 more hill to go :P ).
Last year we did few couple +100km trips, and this year we planning to do few multi day 60km+ trips.
