Great tips. A first time pet parent won't even think of these things. As an adult, I got my first poodle puppy some years ago. I only had to deal with a few accidents. He was rescued from an irresponsible breeder and was afraid of everything. I want to add a new puppy now after losing him, but even I need to do some puppy proofing. Even though I puppy proof electrical cables, after my experience with my late house rabbit, yes I ended up getting an electric shock when he chewed my laptop cord and upset my partner at the time by chewing his PlayStation controller cords - whilst he was playing 🤭 - I had never thought to actually get down to their level. It was definitely an eye opener!
I never had any issues with dogs chewing on cords until I adopted a 6 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback, Pitbull, and Greyhound mix. He was a very chill and great dog! Shortly after we got him, he chewed the cord to our router and got shocked... Luckily he never chewed on cords after that! He is now 5 years old (6 in August) and he is my service dog. He learned very quickly and he's very chill, so he is a fantastic service dog, he doesn't get distracted at all and he loves napping while we are in a restaurant, or at the library. I'm getting my next service dog prospect on June 7th and he is a poodle puppy! I can't wait to see how they get along, I hope Kitchi can teach him some things as he grows. I used my first service dog Lola when I trained Kitchi, dogs respond to each others body language so he started mimicking what Lola did, then he eventually learned the hand cues to the commands. I hope my next puppy will learn the same way! Adult dogs are perfect mentors for young dogs, it also strengthens the bond between the dogs so the puppies will know where to go when they are scared or confused. Kitchi was afraid of fireworks when we got him, Lola wasn't scared at all since she was desensitized at a young age to loud noises, he would go over to her when he heard loud noises. Eventually he realized that Lola wasn't scared or worried at all, then he got used to it! Animals need friends of their own species (unless they are solitary species like betta fish, do NOT put bettas together, they do get along with other fish though) a human can never replace an animal.
