    Great patch! I love the way you broke down the components of what makes up a Leslie sound and apply them to this synthesizer.

    I just discovered that synths like this exist and i am infatuated. I play piano, and drums, and I'm an engineer, and this machine bridges the gap in such a cool way. Its bringing back memories of circuits class, controls, etc. One of my design projects was even building an analog music box that read punch cards that we cut out of card stock. Anyways, i like the way you describe the use of the synth, and breakdown what the different layers of the sounds, and that you reverse engineered sound from a different instrument. Super cool.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад +4

      That's so cool!! You should definitely get a synth, if you don't have one. I wouldn't start with a Moog One, but anything from Sequential would be a real gem or even the Moog Matriarch.
      And yes, this machine is crazy; it's wild how they combined traditional circuits with such a precise level of digital control all for the purposes of making sound.

    • @rodnee2340
      @rodnee2340 Год назад +2

      I would highly recommend the Moog grandmother. But if you have the money get the matriarch. Both are amazing. As is all Moog stuff. If you want to dip your toe though get the mother 32, all the moog goodness for under a grand. And if you're really not sure I think the Werkstatt will cost under $200 and it sounds like a proper Moog. I'm such a Moog fanboy it's not even funny.🙄

      @@dimund Yea, I had to take a moment to get over my moog one crush, but I think your right about something from sequential to start with. I play piano (and drums) and compose music for fun, and I like the idea of being able to play the synth like a piano to some extent, so I'm leaning towards something with a fair amount of voices. Any thoughts on the sequential prophet rev 2 16 voice? It seems pretty reasonably priced, so for moog one cost, I could instead build a mini studio capable of laying down some tracks and beats with an electric drum kit or something. Would I be missing any major features with prophet rev 2 that I would look back on and regret? Or would you recommend something else?

    Love what you're doing here! Such an insightful look into not only working with the Moog One, but also making synths do the things you want them to do! Focusing on mastery of a single instrument is so rare on RUclips, and despite probably never being able to justify a One of my own, I'm learning a lot of great tips that I can adapt to my own synths.

    • @dimund

      This is so thoughtful and such awesome feedback! Yes, I always want more synths, but I have tried to limit myself to a couple of tools that I can master, because that's really necessary to be able to stay in the creative flow when writing a song. If you have to stop to figure something out, you can lose the momentum and fall out of the groove very quickly.
      I wasn't sure if the "educational" component of my videos would play well, so I'm really happy to hear that you are finding it useful! I will do more :D

    Great sound, as always! I haven't tried this yet with my One, but you should be able to save the state of your mod matrix and then load your "effect" into any patch you wanted it on (you'd still have to tweak you LFO phases, etc., buy you'd be close). And bravo for breaking the sound of a Leslie down into its physical components and really modeling it rather than just guessing.

      I am sure you could create it on the summit! It’s really not a terribly complicated patch, but the main gotcha is just that you need to have two layers or one layer with two filters mixable filters that can do high and low pass and independent oscillator routing.

    I'm currently looking to buy a FS synth. I'm between a Prophet 10, OB-X8, or Moog One 8 or 16. It's a lot of money for me, so I want to be smart about what I buy. Unfortunately, the only testing I can really do right now, is via the internet. I've heard that the Moog One is noisy and makes pops, but I've also heard that the people who say that are generally just hating, and don't really have any experience with the machine. I could pretty much get a Prophet and an OB-X8, for the same price as a Moog One 16, so that's something that has me leaning towards them. Plus I really like the OB. The thing is, I've also read that the Moog One can do what the Pro and OB can do, plus some.. It's very difficult to make a choice. I wish I just had endless money, then I could just buy them all, but that's not really feasible for me. If anyone has any advice from experience, I would greatly appreciate it. I have an offer for an new OB right now, but it's only for a limited time, so I feel a bit stressed about making up my mind. I know the Prophet isn't stereo, which surprises me, because it still sounds great to me. The music I make is ambient soundscapes to 90's-2000's era boom bap hip hop.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад

      The main question you have to ask yourself is if you like to do a lot of sound design, because that is a prerequisite with the One. If not, The prophet and the OB would be the better choice, because they will always sound good. They won't be able to do as much as the One can, but that's the tradeoff. It's the difference between wanting a blank canvas or a really nice template. Hope this helps :D
      For the record, I'd have all 3 if I had the space and the money to not care!

      @septembersoul5938 Год назад

      @@dimund Thanks for the reply! It is helpful. To be honest, I'm not a synth wizard, so I may just lean into the OB-X8 and Prophet 5/6/10 for now, and save my pennies for a Moog One later down the road.
      I've also seen that you got the Model D, which is very tempting. Mostly due to the nostalgia of hearing some of my favorite classic rock bands, and 90's hip hop producers having it in their music. Unfortunately, my collection is very mid tier, and I'm looking to upgrade, so I'm not sure if it's limitations are a good idea for my setup right now. It's still very tempting, but the price is shocking. I get the nostalgic and vintage value, but what is Moog putting under the hood, that makes it cost 5k? I understand that the last run ended due to parts becoming scarce, which is concerning if it ever has an issue after the warranty, or maybe even while still under warranty. The plus side is they've been making them for so long, I'm sure they have them very dialed, and issues aren't really a concern.
      I sometimes feel like Moog throws an extra 10% on top, just for their name plate.. haha. I know they're amazing premium machines, but their prices make me very indecisive.
      Thanks again!

      So kind of you to share all of this with me! Thank you :D
      I just started making videos earlier this month, so this is a new format for me, but I am enjoying it and will continue to do so.
      I haven't shared my background, but the short answer is: I started playing piano as a toddler with a mix of classical and blues/jazz, sang in choir in high school, started making beats around 18, studied some music theory and jazz piano in college, began producing dance music around 22 (got my first hardware synthesizer), and spent 4 years in the industry with some success in a duo making bass music that culminated in playing some pretty big shows (EDC, Beyond Wonderland, etc.). I had to step back due to some personal reasons, which led me to pursue a more traditional career. I stopped making music for 3 years and only recently got back into it about 2 years ago. I primarily make dance and synth pop now that features my vocals. I'm hoping to release some of it in the next year.

      I’ve considered DJing again and might play out sometime, because I love it, but it’s not a top priority; I also don’t have a setup to practice on and wonder where I would put it in my place. Playing my own stuff live with synths, however, wouldn’t happen until if/when there is a demand for it, and then I’d probably put together a band like Tame Impala :)

      @@dimund Absolutely! I love creative and artistic minds and find them quite attractive when it comes to learning and understanding their passions. Not sure if you’ve ever experienced it but when you hear someone’s voice or see them on film, it’s a whole different level to actually engage with them as a human being versus “the entertainer”. It’s just kind of cool…so thank you for indulging me. Vocal lessens sound like a real investment in oneself and it’s clearly paid off in the finished product. Ok, so as a DJ, what type of music did you spin- house, techno, R&B, pop, country, etc? All I have is my imagination and curiosity so I’ll just imagine whatever style you share unless you have some tracks somewhere for me to listen to from back in the day! ;-)
      I thought maybe you’d have room for the setup where you are right now but maybe it looks more spacious than what it actually is? When you keep a place so organized and clean, it DOES look bigger! Are there other videos of you performing anywhere else before you became this amazing human being you are today? Always curious so if my questions are ever too much, I’ll politely stop. I’m sure your idea of sharing a part of your life shouldn’t revolve around RUclips long messages from fans like me who get excited from engaging people they follow! • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад +1

      Thank you! Yeah, that’s a great video that Tim did. There was an update recently that exposed access to the tuning routine, which really helps to get everything tightened up between the voices that is good to run every so often.
      It doesn’t sound automatically vintage, but I always program in some “slop” similarly to how Tim does it, if the patch calls for it, but I like how tight the One can sound, so, I prefer that as a starting point; I find it is much better for mono leads, drums, and modern sounds. With the bit crusher on you can get a really nice 80s digital sound out of it too :)

  • @RayyMusik
    @RayyMusik Год назад +1

    As an organist I‘d say: an interesting and widely correct approach. And yes, you have to build a ‘Leslie‘ of your own on any synth; at least I don‘t know any with a satisfying built-in rotary effect. The Prophet X’s one is abysmal, the Hydrasynth’s somewhat better, but still artificial sounding.
    The best outboard digital Leslies are the Ventilators IMO; I run a MiniVent I and a Ventilator II with my clonewheel organs.
    The best way to test if your ‘synth Leslie‘ sounds correct:
    build an organ patch, i.e. sine waves from all oscillators and on/off ‘organ envelopes‘. If this sounds halfway like a Hammond + Leslie, you‘ve done a good job. I even managed to get an acceptable Leslie on my Prophet Rev2, albeit without treble/bass separation.
    Did I miss an LFO on the cutoff frequency in your patch? When the horn/drum points directly to the mic, the sound is also brighter than in other positions.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад +1

      Ah, thank you so much for your input! I missed the LFO on the cutoff, but that makes a ton of sense. I have a list of ways to improve the patch, so I might do just a short vid on the updated version. I’ve been looking at the Vent II, and I’ll likely get one at some point for my pedalboard. You like it?

    • @RayyMusik
      @RayyMusik Год назад

      Yes, I like the Vent. Unlike many cheap Leslie sims, it doesn’t produce too much vibrato. And you can even adjust the mic distance from the virtual speakers. I love a short distance from the horn for a ‘hammering‘ Hammond sound. For a synth pad, however, this is probably not so good.
      Looking forward to your next version. :)

    I tried to replicate this patch following your lead, and I think I've got it pretty close. One thing that's bugging me is that I'm hearing a low-frequency popping at the tail end of the long decay, that makes a kind of dull knocking sound in time with the LFO feeding the VCA level. If I turn that modulation off (the amplitude) then it goes away, so I know it's related to that. But even with the LFO set to a sine wave and a minimal variation, I still hear the knocking at the end of each long tone. I wonder if there's something up with my M1....

      You might try setting the LFO as a VAR and using that as the source to modulate the oscillator volume levels in the mixer section. In general, I find them to be better targets for modulation than VCA level.

    I'm not jealous.🧐
    Just kidding but that is a great sound. My GM is mono in every way so the Moog one sounds like a $9000 synth. Well worth it. But if you can afford that. A REAL Lesley speaker would definitely add to your setup. And would even surpass the inbuilt Moog effects. My mate has a Lesley and it was cheap and gives you more doppler shift. He uses it on a guitar (the pleb) and has some how managed to wire up an expression pedal to the rate. And I have never heard a chorus that sounds even close to that. But good job with that sound you got. It sounds amazing. But if you use an expression pedal for the rate you will have got some serious holly grail sounds going on.
    Sorry you did that. But seriously get a real Lesley you won't regret it. You will have that filter sound also, plus the analogue distortion that you get from it.

    • @dimund

      Pleb had me lol’ing haha
      I’d love to get one, but I just don’t know if I have the room for it in my tiny apartment. I was surprised by how affordable they are! I figured they’d be crazy expensive, but I guess they are relatively simple.
      I actually did set up the expression pedal to ramp the rates, but I didn’t demonstrate it here.
      Really appreciate the comment and the laugh 🙏🏼☺️

    • @dimund

      Not personally, but it looks and sounds great!! I think it’s a great option for an analog poly that has extensive modulation capabilities. For raw sound, I’d go with a prophet 10 or 5 if the One is too much money. I’d even probably go for a Prophet 10 before a One 8 voice :)

    This is nothing new, my old Korg O5RW had a leslie effect in it, it's just routing an LFO to the pan, simple....

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Год назад +3

      The Leslie takes advantage of the Doppler effect, which is not just panning; specifically, it’s the combination of the proportional pitch shifting and volume changes in conjunction with the ping pong panning resulting from the traditional way it is recorded. Additionally, the Leslie effect is only stereo above the cutoff (800 Hz), as the bottom chamber is a single driver and recorded with a single mic.
      I didn’t say it was anything new, and I said it’s a patch that could be recreated on a variety of synths. I thought it would be a fun exercise, liked the results, and decided to share :)

    • @RayyMusik
      @RayyMusik Год назад +2

      Nah, there‘s much more required than just panning. And I bet your Korg Leslie effect is bad like every built-in one except those in some dedicated organs (Hammond XK/SK series, Yamaha YC-61).

    • @rodnee2340
      @rodnee2340 Год назад +3

      Doppler shift is a bit like vibrato but if you have a real Lesley, you will know that it's not just panning the sound. Really the only way to get it is with a speaker that rotates. There is also the distortion and the midrange filtering that a proper Lesley has it is quite mesmerising and very difficult to achieve with electronics. It actually beats with your soul. She has done a good job with trying to get that feel. But there is nothing like a proper speaker. And it's not always practical to use one. They are loud and should be used in an open environment. To get the best results.
