It's a special group of us thankful Elliot came across our lives in this upside down world we exist in.
Not many people are lucky enough to have Elliot cross their path...
He crossed both of our paths and for that I am grateful.

I don't know if this is accurate, but I like my interpretation. This song, among other things, seems to be about how complicated can be a friendship when one of the parts is in need of help. In the lines "I'll do everything I can so you can be what you do" and also in the circuit rider reference, it's like he questions the other part playing the savior in the worst possible way, as a means to feel power over other people. It's not hard to imagine to be friend of a musical genius and feel belittled by his talent, but if you act like the preacher on a horse that comes to help him, it's a boost for the ego.

I've got no new act to amuse you
I've got no desire to use you, you know
But anything that I could do, would never be good enough for you

Leave it alone, yeah, just forget it

    Yes I believe that's where it's at

    So I wait for confirmation
That you're never gonna use your starting gun
Unless its me it sounds like being him just wasn't that much fun

Oh my lord, I fell asleep one day
    Anything that I could do
Is there anything that I could do
That someone doesn't do for you
That someone didn't do for you
That I have already done for you
"...in your paths, the preacher ... the underpath
.. at my speech the one
    Disembodied from the flood …
    Simplest from the wilders
You held out to me the palm of your hand
    Emanate your presence
And let me strive and then
    Go shadows for your tolerance
With fog rolls in your .. full, your salt
Explains feathers that flip from air
    .. as I sold
To be consumed by the snow white cold
    If only I could
If only the plastic hold could stand the flame
    Then this fabric torch
Would know no shame and be at strict play
With the sun that burns the glory
And honor of your mortal holy name
In the twilight the morning starts to glow
    Unmistakable
    Keeping me where I go
    with smoothing and sway
    To be begged
Filled with ancient.." … Sublime sketch
    This principle fuel check
    Will keep a decision
To be either emerald with envy
    Or emerald with ...
    fortune doesn't divvy (??) with..
    with a possibility
    and I kept mine
To go one green world after the next
    No I don't take bets
    Almost notes this
    With the sung pages
    Of future songs
    Reigster from priceless indecisiveness
    Alter calm .. designs
From the greatness of change and chance
Free wills merit glorious motive change
With the blueprints of fates reigns mapped
Unrolled from a it's silk scroll
    .. prance
By the wall to windows face as you dance
Looking out at the spring into deep space
    At which.

I mean no offense to the Smith family, but the choice to not include such luminaries as "Abused" is borderline disgraceful. Almost like it was a way to protect Charlie from what was an indictment in song. We all know who abused our hero. Charlie has to live with that. Not including the real gutsy songs on the album speaks volumes to me about his filthy guilt. Regardless, I love you Elliott. Your pain is our pain.

    • @knuckle12356
      @knuckle12356 4 года назад +15

@@LateNightRewrites ...near as I can recall; Elliott's stepdad Charlie was sexually abusing Elliott. I got the impression it went on for years, during his elementary school age (if too early, someone pls correct me,) and up through early teens. Elliott finally got enough courage to confront the abuse. However, when he told his family (mother) about it, she and the rest of the family didn't believe him, and took Charlie's side. Further, Elliott was punished in some manner for causing trouble for family, being disruptive, or something along those lines.
Bullet points being Charlie sexually (+) abused Elliott at a young age. E wasnt believed when he came forward to family. Further, his supposed protectors gave him a hard time and skepticism. He subsequently bounced out, leaving to live with dad in Portland by 14 or 15, escaping texas ostensibly so he could escape Charlie.
(E had a tat of the Lonestar state on his arm; he said it was a reminder of a place he really didnt want to ever return to. Phrased it like "theres a lot of bad stuff I dont want to talk about, but its stuff that shouldnt be forgotten, a lot of good reasons to never return..." - note, im paraphrasing at best, and by no means is that an accurate quote at the end. But the points mentioned are real points and explanations raised by Elliott. ) RIP buddy. You were too much for this world to handle, and so bright that its people chose to dim your light rather than brighten it's own.
To take the path of no resistance....And you fuckers broke him. Add to THAT, the questionable manner in which he died (incredibly painful and difficult manner of suicide; self impalement,) showing no signs of hesitation marks, which is uncommon in those suicide methods. Also had supposed, possible defensive wounds on forearms. His tox panel came back clear of narcotics or illicit drugs, and had normal levels of prescribed anti depressant and mood stabilizers he was on.
He was alone in his home with his (ex~ish) girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba. She CLAIMED they had been arguing, so she locked herself in the bathroom. At which point she heard screaming, came out to see Elliott with kitchen knife sticking out of his chest.
She goes on to claim that she then pulled the knife out (BIG no-no. Would also explain any of her prints on the handle....) and called 911. Only a small post it was found for a suicide note, and there was controversy that his name had been misspelled onthe note, but I believe that was cleared up as the medical examiner writing it incorrectly in the file, but that it was correct on the original doc... put all that together and the case was never closed. Too much contradictory evidence to point to suicide or murder for certain. Die-hard fans are often quick to condemn Jennifer as murdering him, but who is to say what really happened. Depression can do incredible things to one's psyche, and subsequently pulling off extreme acts, like stabbing yourself in the heart. There was an actor who was found in a field, throat cut ear to ear, it was deemed a suicide. I read about an inmate who once scooped out his eyeballs, without ever making a sound or screaming.... accusing someone of murder is pretty huge. But avoiding getting more$ into her pockets via his creativity seems go be a fairly universally accepted method of expressing distain/anger at the famdamily.

Much like Kurt...was about to enter a completely new phase in his writing. Wasn't ment to be...but can you even imagine the kind of music these guys had left in them? Such a loss....

Elliott's music wasn't a tribute to a skateboarder's life. Not hating, just saying, his music is so powerful and this song is about a dark part of his life where he went through a terrible break up with a girl he was madly in love with, lost his friends and band mates from heatmiser and moved from Oregon to NYC "coast to coast" appreciate the lyrics for what they are.

I think people understand that Elliott truly spoke to Dylan, who dealt with at least two kinds of hardship, and I absolutely do not ever mean to compare their traumas, or anyones, ever. I just mean to highlight that you can let things be more than one thing.
I was moved by Elliott first & I appreciate Dylan's amplification of Elliott. I felt shivers from this song before putting together the narrative behind its lyrics. I don't mean this to come across harshly and thanks for the detail on this particular song.

    • @Lcacique
      @Lcacique 7 лет назад +3

Just to be clear, he didn't lose his bandmates. He moved on from Heatmiser and eventually moved far away, but he remained friends with Neil, Tony and Sam. And most of his friends in Portland would have loved it if he would have returned to the rose city. He was and continues to be missed.
