I did a quick google and found the Shelly mango is a hybrid of a Tommy Atkins and a Keitt mango, developed in Israel in 1989. Interesting fact of the day!
My local Sainsburys only offer the usual 'Kent' or 'Julie'. The last time I bought a 'Kent' from the supermarket, it had a CRUNCHY texture like apple, and the taste was very unremarkable and underwhelming. Edible and sweet, but disappointing. I may as well bought myself a 'Granny Smith' and tucked my gnashers into that.
The local supermarkets here tend to have keitt, kent or palmer. The ‘gourmet’ varieties occasionally turn up in high season at Waitrose in boxes of 4. To be honest I buy mangoes every week at Aldi, they are so cheap at the moment. As I buy them so often they do vary a lot in quality, sometimes as you said they are pretty poor , but I do sometimes get extremely good ones
Julie is a variety we have in Jamaica that is verrry sweet when properly ripened such a shame that you had it and it was crunchy😭 The only time I’ve had it good over here is when I buy it from either the Afro-Caribbean shops (which are pricey) or directly from an importer who was selling in my area. The peak time to get them is during summer time so any other time I can imagine they’d be wack
@louiscarberry3138 that was just Gary that was unlucky of course, I’ve had a fair share of decent mangoes over here but of course they are never as good as ripe off the tree 😁
I had a box of Shelley last week
Lovely mango, I’d never tried it before
It looked very good, Brett. I bought some Shelly mangos many years ago from my local ASDA, not seen them sold since though.
It was a lovely fruit, worth the extra cost for a treat
You have just convinced me to plant more Shelly mango trees
Lol lucky you can buy them where you live 😁
This video makes me want to try a few new mango varieties. There's so many different ones available now, which wasn't the case a few years ago.
They only have them occasionally at Waitrose when in season as well as the regular kent or keitt

Yes they seemed to have developed a few varieties in Israel 😱
Gourmet mangoes? How posh! Do you plan on planting the seed?
I doubt if I’ll bother as mango seedlings and me don’t go hand in hand 😂😂
Yum!! We always buy the cheaper ones, even though they are always unripe😆
Yes I always buy the 90p ones haha but this was a special treat to see if they were better
