+BruceT Yes, even a guy like Foreman (who was known as a tough dude) was humble to people and respectful. Heck, George even starred on an episode of Sanford and Son back in 1977. He had a great sense of humor.
Eugene McGirt Absolutely. The big man was my favourite on a personal level. When Ali was just being himself, he too was very humble and respectful, as was Joe.
Holmes IMO is one of the most underrated champions of all time. How he got up and survived to win from that right hand is simply "godly" . Next to Ali Larry had the best overall skills of any fighter in history
Jerel Kenworthy he was well past it when Mike Tyson fought him I hate the double standards with Tyson fans. People say Tyson was beaten by Holyfield and the excuse always Tyson wasn’t the same after jail and the death of Cus D’Amato. Yet you all think Tyson beat the real Larry Holmes.
Had the distinct pleasure of meeting Earnie Shavers a few years ago. One of the major thrills of my life. A gentleman and a legendary fighter. The highest knockout percentage in boxing history. Larry Holmes in the top ten of all time. Two legends.
Larry said he didn't honestly feel himself get off, he said he was hit so hard he got knocked out but hitting the floor made him just wake up and bounce back.
I mean no disrespect but Larry had big wins against opponents who were past their prime. Larry could not have beaten prime Ali or prime shavers. Larry peaked after the golden era of boxing. When Larry was past his prime Tyson made minced meat of him. He could not give a good fight like his aged opponents gave him in his prime.
The only time Larry will beat ali was when they met. Larry in his prime would not even make the headlines against Frazier or Ken Norton let alone against Foreman or Liston. Larry was good but unfortunately he emerged between two golden generations. In the era of Larry there really wasn't any boxer worth the history books
I have no idea how Larry got up from that punch from Eearnie... he was leaning into it too, he was gone! Superhuman recovery. I think that shows Larry's greatness
Shavers nowadays looks to have all the quiet poise and serenity of a wise old monk, like you could imagine him somehow summoning that insane punching power out of the ether whenever he needs it! ;*O
oh believe me - to this day the man could still knockout an elephant, You don't lose power like that, Punchers like him come around once every 100 years.
Great interview. Holmes was such a great champion. Shavers was one of the best guys to never win a title. If he were fighting today he'd smoke out the entire HW division.
This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen. Earnie Shavers is really a freaking legend. I never knew Tyson avoided him. Damn. And Larry Holmes, man. He's one of the greatest Heavyweights of all time...

Love both these fighters. Holmes has always been one of my all time favorites. Wish this was a longer interview without the rush job. btw the longer rounds back then made a boxing match a totally different spectacle to watch.
Back in the day we had some REAL MEN up in that Heavyweight Division. Hell, the 2nd level guys were Quarry, Shavers, Lyle, Chuvalo, Patterson, Ellis, Jimmy Young, Gerry Cooney. The 3rd level guys were Bonavena, Joe Bugner, Evangelista, Bob Foster. You had a long road to the top. No cakewalks there.
I never like Holmes while he was fighting. I thought he was arrogant and maybe even jealous of Muhammad Ali. But has as his career went along I gained much respect for him. Really rooted for him against Ray Mercer. I rate him top 3 heavyweight champs of all time.
im lucky enough to live just 5 minutes away from ernie in moreton,wirral.... and the first time i met ernie was in moreton town center were i said "hi ernie" in which he shook my hand and my wifes hand and we spoke for 10 minutes... i mentioned i boxed in the british army... and ernie then went home and returned with a signed photo and video( puncher of the century ) ernie is the nicest guy you can ever meet... and a credit to the world of boxing..... a true gent and champion !
Both truly good men and gracious to all as far as I know. This was the best era in boxing IMO! Loved Earnie but he started boxing later in life and seems to me didn’t develop the boxing skills many others had.
@jeryd2003 1)That's true. Holmes said he always thought he could beat Ali because he sparred with him and later on got to where he could handle Ali in sparring. But that was in the early 70s when he started sparring with him and by the mid 70s when Holmes' own career was on the rise, no wonder he was hanging with Ali then. Buit you never hear the guys from the 70s that had tough fights with Ali acknowledge how incredible his speed and reflexes were when he was in his prime.
I rate larry holmes high..he has a strong will to win and a very good boxer and ernie shavers a very hard puncher but I DONT THINK THEY FOUGHT MUHAMMAD ALI AT HIS BEST THO...larry was not at his best when he fought michael spinks or mike tyson
Great fighters the both of them. The Acorn was an absolutely murderous puncher. 68 ko's in his 74 wins. Just WOW!! But Larry is my favorite all time. Terrific all around boxer with a piston like jab, great right hand, great chin, determination and conditioning. Just a pity that he maybe didn't really get the respect and the type of acknowledgment that he should have. That's mostly due to the giant shadow cast by Ali.
Hey Brian, I met ernie at an event that Gerry Cooney held for him in Penn. Like you said, he was one of the nicest people I ever met. Super sweet and shook his hand...was the biggest fists I've ever seen...shoulders like a cigarette machine and he was jus as solid.. cool dude. Also, same night I met Randy "tex" Cobb. He also was a really nice guy. Was happy go lucky with a great sense of humor. It was a great night for boxing fans

he might not be in your top 5hw list, but he's in a lot of peoples top 5, a lot of people with lightyears of boxing knowledge. He certainly is in my top 5hw list
I agree with what Larry says about boxing today. Guys like Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, Lyle, Holmes and Shavers fought with heart and they fought to win, always pressing the action, never giving up. No one fights like that today. Today's fighters are risk averse, they take no chances. They fight not to lose. Any fighter I listed above would completely clean out the HW division today.
The 70's and 90's were very tough eras in heavyweight boxing but I tend to think that all things are relative. I think the K brothers would have been very good contenders in any era. All-time greats? Not sure but they are unusually skilled for their size and that would make them very difficult.
Chris Acosta I don't think the Klitchko's would be any more than a Jerry Quarry. Not even George Chuvalo because Chuvalo was durable and could take a lot of punches. I don't view the Klitchko's as durable.
The klitchkos are good for there time but the would not have bein champs in the 70s. Names yes but alot of tough fights for them back then. That fact that neither can fight on the inside and are one paced one dymentional fighters would be exposed in the 70s no question.
