Funny story. Way back in 1990 I was visiting DC and a friend of mine living in the area took me to walk through the Smithsonian complex. About 10 minutes of walking later, I heard trumpet playing coming from a building -- and, as a trumpet player, I couldn't NOT walk in. It turns out the Louis Armstrong Jazz Trumpet Competition was taking place. There were only a few people in the audience -- and Clark Terry, Snooky Young, Nat Adderly and Red Rodney judging from the back. I thought I'd gone to heaven. I sat near them hoping some of their vibes would rub off through proximity -- but, alas, I don't think it worked. More to the point, on the stage was Greg Gilbert (who ultimately came in third), followed by a 17-year-old apparent hick from Iowa. Needless to say, Ryan the hick just blew everything and all people away -- and won the competition. About a year later, I was teaching in Florida -- and came across (the late) Willie Thomas playing with a band one smoky night in Orlando. He invited me over for a lesson -- and gave me not only 3 hours of his time and a beer, but a tape of him playing with a 16-year-old kid, Ryan, from Iowa the year before. What a stellar, inspirational time.
That beautiful tone coupled with a marvellous articulation and superbly balanced logical lines makes for musicianship of an altogether higher standard. Fine accompaniment also. My thanks from the UK.
Ryan Kisor absolutely amazing. I'm using your solo as my auditon for next year in high school jazz. Did you do back accent tongues for all of the phrases?
Nice "Organic Real Jazz" conversation, don't you agree? Eminently classy, academically orthodox and beautifully well-structured is the artistry of Ryan Kisor, the trumpet - not Ryan Kisor, the impersonating commentator; or, is he?

A bit to demanding
Ryan is a great performer, but this is one tune that shouldn't be jazzed up.
