Beautiful job recording this Train in this Section. Growing up our family stayed with my Dad’s Aunt between the Pinecliffe Tunnel 27 in the direction of Denver. We spent quite a bit of time down by the tracks and South Boulder Creek. Thanks! 👍
Excellent production. Those guys were grinding and getting the job done. Was surprised they could maintain that much speed on a curve up to that brutal grade.
This is very good .... your camera placement showing an almost folding of the consist on top of itself. I love the head end moving right over the end of the train moving left. You're a skillful artist my friend. Multi thumbs up on this one.
I like how they lift the headlights on the third ace I work for hallcon and I know a crew that leaves all the number boards lit on he's motors looks cool at night.
I will probably be doing a video in the future on tips for train videos. Including how to pick some good locations, what sides to use, angles, lighting, scenery etc, if anyone is interested.
Reminds me of when Rio Grande once ran long coal drags over Tennessee Pass. Seven motors on top, two or three in the middle, and two on the bottom. Even with over 40,000 horsepower on those trains, they were lucky if they made 10 or 15 mph over the pass! 🚂🚂🚂🚂
Very nice pan-back in the S curve!! Not a usual catch on videos!! Best yet, the last two blasts @3:18 were most assuredly aimed to you!! Nothing like an acknowledgement on a cold evening!!! Keep up the great catches!!
I've stood in those spots , only when I stood there so many years ago , I didn't have a camera and those were DRG&W engines and trains ! Still a couple of Cool locations . Not used to seeing snow this low , this early ! ToOt tOoT TOOOOOOOT TooT ToOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoT ! ::::: :::: ::: :: : . . . . !
@@travelingtom923 I don't know about 40 but a lot busier for sure . DRG&W ran a much shorter train back then and trains have become enormous these days ! This and the loss of freight to trucks accounts for the lower frequency of trains to a great degree !
Long long train. I suddenly am excited like I’d get as a girl watching trains and hearing train sounds. I’d love it more when the crossing gates came down and we were in the first car at the gate. I rarely see trains anymore. Sad. The funniest train story was staying in a motel near /in Navajoland (reservations) in Arizona. Billboard signs for miles approaching the motel said: Quiet. Off highway, no train noise. During the night periodically our motel room lit up and shook as trains came by- looked out the little bathroom window and the trains were on tracks extremely close to the back of the motel, unseen when tourists checked in! The noise was deafening. The baby slept through all the hourly trains.
Oooops! I’ve mixed up the story... the billboards advertising the motel said No Highway Noise! and Back Away from Noise of Highway!! well, that was truth in advertising!
Over a 4% grade. The second part looks like Big 10 Curve. Isn't it? I put together an 150 car loaded coal train in Train Simulator across Rollins Pass. I had a great mix of 90MACs and tunnel motors in three sets. I pulled the mountain really good. I kept around 20 mph. I looked behind me after going around Big 10 Curve with the hopper car wind break. The lead was against the mountain and the tail was around where you were.
No the train climbed big ten curve about 5 minutes earlier. They say the grade is 2% but I swear that hill has to be over 2%. Here is the location www.google.com/maps/place/9699-9573+Blue+Mountain+Dr,+Arvada,+CO+80403/@39.8732527,-105.2795538,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x876b93cf78083247:0x255108aa45f5a08f!8m2!3d39.8732489!4d-105.2773427
@@travelingtom923 you're right. It's been over 4 years since I've played the game. At Big 10 Curve, you can look behind you and see your train in two big curves. I know it's a game, but once I got to that point around that curve, I never came off the throttle until Moffitt Tunnel. The ruling grade is 4%, but it doesn't change much from that point to the top. I was wanting to see Moffitt Tunnel on a trip. From one portal to the other, Google maps said 75 miles. I'm curious, is there anything left of the old line before the tunnel was made?
No wonder it needed 3 locos at the head end and 2 helpers bringing up the rear. That's a long train even for level ground, but, going up a grade? On ice and snow? WOW!!! Two things---pray the switches aren't frozen and there's plenty of sand for the wheels.
I've wondered about engine consists and helpers. Are all engines kept in working order (controls, seats, cab, bathroom, etc.) so that any engine can be used at any time? Or is like a fleet vehicle where certain units might be more preferable to drive versus others?
All locomotives on the train are in full working order and can be operated manually if they need to. The locomotives pushing on the rear will probably be leading a train the next day.
Climb is steep for sure when the route winds around the base of the mountains. Reminds me of the path Zephyr takes with the ten hills climbing in/out of Denver. Great video👌👍
That is one awesome video, love the magic towards the end, nothing like that here in Australia. What was the tonnage, length & gradient of the climb. Really spectacular video, beautiful scenery too.
@@travelingtom923 Thanks Tom, that makes sense! Pretty sure that's a first for me... I've definitely never filed it in the memory bank if I've seen another train using lights like that. Nice catch! 😊
We have a big nation in many small places and with individuals like you capturing the events of man and nature together like this makes me believe it ain't POTUS making this country great. Thanks for sharing your fabulous talent and willingness to capture a simple event so magnificently in all elements of weather. 200 thumbs up!!!!!!!!!
Why in the world would you show the train coming up to the first hill and then it ends and there’s no second part anywhere on your little menu board that’s about the fifth time it’s happened to me and I hope the last few dirty rats
He like many spend their time on social media comics. Lacking common sense, he should look at how many trucks are not on the highways by use of intermodal transportation which reduces the carbon footprint into the atmosphere. His answer is right in front of him.

That is a good area for videos. Not too much train action this year for the Moffat.
Love the ambient light in this video contrasted with the loco lights as the train rounds the switchback. Both angles were very nice.
Tom that was some of the best video ever. Thank you so much for doing this.❤️
You are welcome.
switchback was outstanding tom..
Excellent production. Those guys were grinding and getting the job done.

Amazing just how powerful these locomotives are!
Wow what a beautiful video. The scenery is really pretty. Night shots beautiful, snow scene is beautiful too. Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome.
Just needs some John Denver Christmas music in the background!!😊
Was wondering why this train had five locomotives at first, seemed small for that - that brutal climb in the second segment explains why.
Great video that's probably one of the best places in the country to shoot trains up in the mountains
Reminds me of the trains coming up the mountain in Mountaintop Pennsylvania in the 50's. Love those trains! Thanks for bringing back the memories.

@@travelingtom923 Beautiful , professionally done. I've watched several times!
Beautiful video. Really shows the full scope of the grade. The lighting almost makes it haunting. Thanks for sharing!
There's not that many trains in Colorado but out here they put on a show. Great vido. 👍
(A follow-up ) with all the changes on the railroads its great to see the the Moffet road still alive and not abandoned again great show!
Yes and it has gotten much busier lately.

Beautiful scenery and at 5:10 the magic begins... it's really something.
Agreed! Would love to have seen that back in the day with the steam engines.
An excellent video. ♡ T.E.N.
Trains and beautiful scenery, doesn't get any better than that!
Beautiful footage in the snow
That grade looks like something out of sci-fi movie- crazy. Awesome video- thanks for sharing and braving the cold!!
Really enjoyed your video! Absolutely beautiful scenery and the lights on the train make it more beautiful!

I saw those lights in the background @2:20 and didn’t realize at first that those were from the wildfires? Snow and fire together. Crazy!
Amazing to see Two trains coming and go.
Tom congratulations for everything you do.
That is actually the same train. Some really amazing engineering designing that railroad.

How does electric reduce pollution and global warming? Electric still needs to be produced in power plants that burn fossil fuels.
