I am so newbie that I didn't realize there was a previous planning and draft before the the final drawings.
    So, thank you for sharing!

Sometimes there is and sometimes I just wing it. But planning things out before I sit down to the final drawing always results in a better drawing in the end.

Good video. I don’t think your thumbnails were messy! You are not the only one with practice pages in their sketchbook for sure. Thanks for all of the info.

Messiness is a sign of success to me. I’ve got to embrace the imperfection.

    1. Fascinating insight, thanks for that.
    2. Drawing abstractly, my approach is drastically different from yours. I start with the proportions of the piece of paper I intend to use. I outline that shape in my thumbnail book, which is graph paper about 5"x7", as large as will fit. The graph paper helps me because I use a lot of straight lines and simple arithmetic relationships between shapes. As a polychromist, I use color pencils in this stage, to work out the colors. Then I transfer in simple graphite lines the image to the final paper. Shameless, I use a straight edge, compasses and circle/ellipse templates where I want the lines to be firm and "accurate". Then ink it all freehand, sticking pretty close to the thumbnail, but often adding more detail.
    3. I haven't really thought out or designed this process; I'm just describing what I find that I usually do.
    4. My cousin gave me a piece of watercolor paper 12'x4'. Currently I am struggling to come up with an image that will work on this scale and fill the paper. It will undoubtedly end up in watercolor, but I kind of dream about spending 2 years filling it with tiny detail pen work.

Interesting process. No shame in losing tools, it just means that the outcome looks unique to you and your tool set!
Are you at all a fan of the work of the late Kim Jung Gi? He’s someone who could fill up a giant paper beautifully. I can’t understand how his brain worked.
