    Cleaning up the deadfall around the cabin is smart, keep the forest fire danger away.

    • @wizewoods9130
      @wizewoods9130 3 года назад +3

      I wouldn't deny anyone a good camp fire to enjoy while camping and hanging out at the cabin. In reality though the best place for all the dead woody material is right out in the woods on the forest floor. Instead of dragging it out and burning it Martin could drag it the other way far enough in to the woods to get it out of site. Put it in some low spots and spread it out so it rots quickly and is less visible. In professional terms they call it LWD(lying dead wood). Piled up brush piles are good also as many critters take advantage of those. In addition to the importance of carbon storage wildlife habitat is a critical benefit.

      @@wizewoods9130 I know that's the conventional wisdom these days, but failure to clear dead wood is also contributing to horrible forrest fires. On private land, and on a lot of native American reservations, dead wood is often cleared out. On my own property I clear the brush within 100 feet of the house and trim the trees up 8-10 feet. Dead wood goes on the log pile (better than cutting a living tree for firewood.) If I plant anything new I consider whether it creates a fire risk. I also mow the grass short in a broad swath next to the road as people driving through have been known to toss cigarettes. My brother in Montana calls this "parking it up," and it's what he does on his 10 acres there. We still get lots of wildlife, especially deer and elk. The state forestry department can advise people on what to do to lower the fire risk on their property. A metal roof is good too.

      @@wyominghome4857 Yes, I see your point , wildfires are certainly a concern, especially in the more vulnerable areas in the country. Where I live in Maine and where Martins cabin is in Minnesota it is typically not a problem, this summer however we were in drought conditions and the prevalence of wildfires increased greatly. My particular woodlot seems to always be some what wet even in the driest of summers. Good to take those precautions on your property!

    • @TheNorthwoodsman1
      @TheNorthwoodsman1  3 года назад +1

      In IL I never burn anything, all leaves and brush are composted. At the MN cabin I need to keep as large an area as I can free of any fuel load. If I pushed all the wood debris to the edges it would end up being a huge fuel load that would keep a fire advancing. I do what I can and if a fire were to come through a few water dumps from a plane could possibly save the cabin area.

    I've never seen anyone use a grubbin' hoe to wash clothes, that was neat. You ought to find you a gas-powered wringer washing machine, they can be found. I had one up to 2 yrs ago, it just flat wore out on me. I went back to an electric wringer washer, I can fire up the generator if the power is out to wash clothes. And I've got a hot water system worked out, it's gravity fed, from an old hot water tank, painted it black, and put on cedar poles about 10 ft off the ground, and ran a hose over to the porch, where I wash clothes. Works good in later spring, summer up till mid October or so. Direct sun on that black tank gets that water real hot.
    I drain it before it gets colder, and heat water on the wood stove in winter.

    When you said that you baked a chocolate cake in case somebody dropped in for the weekend, I thought to myself "That cake is going to be eaten by Martin - it is his favorite cake, if I recall!" Just like those "vitamins" that he savors!
    A belated happy golden anniversary to you and Vonnie - got ya beat by a year!

      I just got back from two weeks at the cabin and shared a lot of pies with visitors.

    I had some of those little shrews for a while. Finally heard them in a trash bag, grabbed it and threw it in the fire after I closed it up. Couldn't trap them. You'd think, if they kill mice, leave them alone, but they would keep me awake.

    Been throwing around the idea of constructing a log framed woodshed like you have. I've got some old barn wood and tin for the roof might as well put it to use. The solar panel stand looks like it's working great. Gotta save time for coffee and chocolate cake!
