- Bycatch threatens the sustainability and resiliency of our local fishing communities, regional economies, and ocean ecosystems. NOAA Fisheries has a 40-year track record of collaborating with fishermen, academia, and our partners to address bycatch.
It will only get worse if bill HR200 passes. Draggers are killing everything in SoCo RI, leaving trails of dead fish everywhere.
This is sad this is still not implemented everywhere even in 2021
This feels like looking for the right way to do the wrong thing. The most effective way to protect our oceans is to not eat seafood.
The typewriter business no longer exists and neither does the horse drawn carriage business. The way to preserve jobs AND preserve our ecosystem is to adapt.

Bycatch is the biggest problem for sharks in the US, and honestly, I usually avoid seafood for that reason. But it's a personal choice; fishing is a big economy and even bigger part of our culture. As long as people are AWARE of the connection between consumer decisions and bycatch, then either choice - seafood or no seafood - should be respected.
