When you live in the ocean, it can be hard to find ways to keep hidden from predators, or from your own prey. But these three animals have found clever ways to stay hidden, by using light to their advantage. One of them even /makes light/, specifically to hide better!

Project idea: Please demonstrate how sound changes when passing through helium vs regular air vs pressurized air vs radon or such.
Can somebody please get them to do this? Thanks!
@@Sublimation250F scishow reports science but doesnt perform experiments, you're better off asking someone like veratassium or the action lab or even electroboom
Reid is my favorite. That pun-chline landed perfectly.
The thumbnail makes the squid look like a flood infection form which is honestly scary
That squid is a monument to all our sins... or maybe more accurately the sins of the Forerunners, but anyways.

When it's come to invisibility there's two kinds of players: the ghosts and the flashbangs.
The beauty of nature that hopefully will be preserved and not ruined by plastic debris..
i have bad news for you :(
We don’t even have time to worry about the plastic debris yet. We have to address the rising water temperatures first!
humans not only use light, but also sound to hide.
*drops flashbang*
And it makes a great reversal prank when you been tipped off about that surprise party your extrovert friend set up for you.
"Below the Edge of Darkness" is a non-fiction book by marine biologist Edith Widder, and I highly suggest it for a fascinating and entertaining exploration of bioluminescence!
It's like a form of stealth technology! Neat!
A glow in the dark squid? You've got to be squidding me!
I could hear the laugh track from reading that 😂🙄
@@quinnwasson2399 Same!
Almost inked myself laughing
why..
HA! Dad…is that you?😜
Man, they made the Glow Squid real. Minecraft has gone too far.
Lol 😂
Glow squids are a different species I think
I can’t believe minecraft invented squids
I clicked on this video solely to look for this comment.
*I can’t believe they added squids to real life!1!11!!!!1!!*
Me, when I ask my DM if I can make a Hide check with no cover: 🦑
Squid lights up, squid disappears. You can't explain that!
Octopuses, like most insects, have rhabdoms, so they can see polarization. But can lookdowns?
Amazing, thank you 👍
Your delivery is improving.
🤨 “A lot of nature’s tried and true camouflage tricks aren’t that useful out in the big wide ocean”-aside from color matching, countershading is the oldest trick in the book! We can date it back more than 100 million years, but it’s almost certainly older.
I mean he said “a lot of” not “all” or even “most.”
I JUST LOVE marine biology, they are all so weird and curious.
Yo minecraft, why can't YOUR glow squid turn invisible, huh???
Those squids had a pretty bright eyedea!
Cephalopods 😍
Nature is so smart
I'm familiar with glow in the dark rubber squids that are used as lures, but this is new.

Do all sea creatures who glow do so for camouflage purposes, or do the reasons vary? I would think the reasons would vary. Maybe that's just the purpose of glowing clearly?
One could say the predators farmed them to have these features by eating all the ones that didn’t 😂
At the deepest levels of the ocean, almost no surface light can penetrate, red light especially so, so most creatures at that depth have lost the ability to see red light as it's pretty much useless to sense light that isn't there. This has led to many of the bizzare creatures down there turning various shades of dusky red as it means _almost nothing can see them_.
these are actually really good rhymes wow. normally i dislike rhymes
Whoah 😮
amazing
This episode feels very poetic, lots of rhyming with the cadence.. I could be wrong though.
i cant believe you didnt say the words counter illumination ONCE in this video
Flagging this video as needing (not just auto-generated) subtitles. Please help us hard of hearing and deaf folks access your content!! 🥰🤟🏻

Nature is so beautiful and adapts quickly, it copied Minecraft already.
Yeah Minecraft 1.69 i fun
Natural problems require natural solutions...
No matter how unnatural it may seem to us mere humans and our paltry understanding of the world around us...
Reid, you are not only a fantastic host, but you are beautiful as hell
gotta thank minecraft for inventing squids
I knew a girl in middle school that looked like the Lookdown. It looked like God wiped her face downward. I have a friend that stuck around the hometown who tells me her look got way less exaggerated and I'm glad. Shelby was a sweet girl.
Was she bullied?

Tell me are you still truely believe these creatures engineered them self without massive knowledge of biology physics chemistry and many other science sectors ??!

i wonder how can one humanely kill a squid
Karate chop in a specific spot right between the head and the mantle to kill off every part of it at once, meaning it doesnt feel any pain.
Don’t.
