  • In today's video I am making a cover for my generator.
I wanted to have a cover for it because it would probably be storming whenever I needed to use it.
I just used materials that I had around to show you that you don't have to spend much money.
An update here. I had to use the generator on a 30c day and it was getting too hot, so I made two supports for the front that would keep it open and also keep the rain off the generator.
Please leave comments if you have ideas that will help other people with this kind of project.

Great idea. Protect the generator and it's portable. Keep up the great work.

The hole on top exposes it to the rain...better to make the top a lid.

Peter: I recently used it in a summer storm we had and it worked perfect.
Can you tell me why this isn't a great idea.
      Thanks for watching.

You get what you pay for and this is cheap. Heat extraction is a big issue. Overheat the gen and it will soon fail from cylinder head or winding issues. Might be okay in a moody Manitoba winter morning but summer might not be so foregiving. I did a similar project and ended up with a 16" 3,000 cfm fan to keep temp about 10-15F above ambient and less than 104F max. Most modern generators have a Co monitor and the way you have built your compartment that alarm, if you have one, will cause a shutdown.
Sound travels in straight lines so you need to introduce some bends around openings (ducts, baffles) to force a change of direction to baffle some of the sound. In other areas of the compartment you need to seal contact points on lids etc to prevent sound from "leaking" through (think weather stripping). Good sound insulation material costs $$. Attached to the inside wall you need a sound barrier (MLV) to line the inside and a less dense sound absorbant material on top of that. A muffler too can help. You have paid no attention to acoustics and wood is a poor barrier.
If you search youtube you will get plenty of great ideas or look for Zombie Box as well and see how these are constructed.
