Kenyans in South Africa were last evening demanding compensation after some of their compatriots lost property to looters in xenophobic attacks.
The Kenya Diaspora in South Africa (Kedesa) said it was working with the High Commission to formally ask South African authorities to compensate them. The demand came after it emerged that two Kenyans were among the dozens of foreigners who incurred losses to the violence that started in Gauteng Province, the administrative region where the commercial capital Johannesburg is located.
Kedesa said the victims were law-abiding people running businesses in the area of the city known as Malvern when a mob descended on their establishments, looted and burnt them down.
“One of us has lost his stock of clothes worth about 200,000 rand (Sh1.4 million). That was his entire source of income. Another lost a portion of it, but what is left equally destroyed; it is charred. This was also the end of the month when they would be making good sales,” Kedesa chairman Godfrey Kamatu told the Nation by phone.

The question should be why South African have so many problems with the new waves of migrants. Even back then in apartheid blacks South African were poor but living side by side with foreigners

As a South African I condemn the violence we saw in the previous week. What happened in South Africa had nothing to do with foreign nationals, but a lot to do with criminals who are predominantly from Nigeria. In South Africa, we do not rely on others to solve our problems. We do it ourselves. We also do not go to other countries to live there. So if anyone chooses to come to our land, the only home we have, they must behave and show respect to our government.
Some South Africans do tend to live in other African countries but it’s not as common but it is very much possible to find South Africans in other countries.

I lived and worked in Cape Town for about 6 years. South Africans are a very hospitable people. They are our brothers from another mother. The problem they are having is partly stemming from corruption in their government. I worked with a Nigerian there. He is a honest hard working fellow but there were quite a few crooked ones also who took advantage of the system. A few rotten apples are ruining the whole batch. There are also successful middle class black South Africans. The government needs to make sure that jobs are filled by South Africans first and create an environment for South African entrepreneurs. If they deal with the corruption in government it will go a long way in helping to solve the unemployment among their people.
Does it mean that there's no more land in SA for them to start their businesses like other foreigners do? Why most they go and destroy their livelihoods? Is it government of SA that established those businesses? That's pure jealousy.

I agree with you. The problem is in their heads, however my opinion is that the old regime is to blame. Apartheid-ism denied the black South Africans education and other human rights like Health, proper housing etc. When it was abolished,the educated blacks were too few, there arose a vacuum in such professions that Africans from other Nationalities filled. The South Africans were at the time happy poaching professionals from other African countries to teach their children and treat them in hospitals. Now that their children are educated this is the way they are showing their gratitude.

we Kenyans are very welcoming, we have hosted people from different countries and are proud of ourselves, we dont support xenophobic attacks and we dont hate anybody so for those who are calling kenyan names remember we are a part of Africa that has been the home to many immigrants , i will always hold my head high as a proud Kenya, we welcome everybody especially our African sisters and brothers to visit and open legitimate businesses in Kenya.
