As Thatcher says in the movie, "The medicine is harsh, but the patient requires it." Some Britons dislike her because she had the guts to make unpopular yet necessary decisions as Prime-Minister. She understood very well that making painful cuts and reforms to make Britain prosperous again was going to sink her popularity, but she didn’t back off. How do you call that? Courage, yes, courage. These days, however, very few politicians have the will power of this woman...
Went to see this movie yesterday, a Masterpiece by the one & only Streep, the Mount Everest of actors! Perfect casting throughout; Brilliant in every respect. Highly recommended.
The song is called Almost Martyrs. A great song that is becoming more and more popular for trailers i.e this one and The Artist. It was the centre theme for The Life Of David Gale. Thumbs up so people can find the answer to the thumbs up question.
Coming form the east we disliked Thatchers policies, but it cannot be argued that she did what was best for her country, and though many of her policies were hated there even in the short term by some in her own country, looking at the long term result personally i think she got it right...whatever said and done great lady.....with balls of steel (bigger than that of some male politicians these days) to put up with what she had to go through...truly a class act in my opinion
Dear Academy awards just hand over the award to Meryl Streep. Once again she proves that she can have one great role after another. You didn't even get a glimpse of Meryl in this film all you saw was Margaret Thatcher. This movie is not about the political part it's about the human side of The Iron Lady and that there is always more than one side to every story. Yes she wasn't the best prime minister but she had a lot of cojones. I admire that about her. We need more strong women like Margaret.
A Story of an AMAZING Woman... very similar to Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad Bissessar. She too broke through the gender and class barriers to be heard in a male dominated world. I hope someday that they will make a movie about her as well :)
I simply look forward to Meryl Streep's acting and seeing a perspective of a woman who had to fight for her belief (whether it was agreeable or not) in a field that has been completely dominated by men. A great actress like Meryl Streep shouldn't be judged by what role she takes. Movies don't always make a person a hero, but rather tries to show different perspectives, and I think this movie is the same way.
She HAS TO WIN THE OSCAR!!! My God, there are times in this movie that Meryl looks and SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE THE GREATEST FEMALE LEADER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, THE IRON LADY, LADY MARGARET THATCHER. The only thing that may keep her from winning is the fact that Lady Thatcher is portrayed sympathetically, and, as a CONSERVATIVE, THAT IS A NO NO IN UBA-LIBERAL HOLLYWOOD. God Bless The Iron Lady, God Bless our Mother Country, and God Bless The United States of America. Semper Fi.
What cool about this movie is we could see her as a bad or good person, depending of what of our understanding. But what I love this movie is that they never hide her or her politics. She'll forever be as controversial.
Interesting. Maybe this will be a good movie...certainly looks like it. Margret Thatcher is one of my heroes and I just hope they don't end up saying she is some sort of villian when in fact she was a true heroine and a blessing to England.
This film made me appreciate her so much more than before. I am currently reading "The Downing Street Years" and have read "Path to Power". What a remarkable, tough minded person... seriously where can we find her today? Somewhere behind the curtain perhaps? Excellent film.
looks AWESOME! Meryl Streep is one of the best actresses ever! can't wait to watch this. Glenn Close is another great actress, so excited to watch these movies!
Everyone needs to read both her books "Path to Power" and "Downing Street Years".. all told in extensive detail by Mrs. Thatcher. A great lady who had the decency to wipe away Socialism from England's already troubled Labour Party. This movie inspired me to learn more about her.
A true character made of steel and principles! Necessary steps Lady Thatcher had done were and will always be unpopular, but all the similar policy, no matter who makes it, is unpopular at all time. Many people do not want to hear the truth therefore they vote for left-wing liars, not characters like her. Her importance has no doubt. She has been one of those who defeated communism in the Eastern Block for which the people should applaud her. And Meryl Streep was the best election for this role.
I sort of agree. For example, as far as I could see, the great quote at the end of the trailer, "Gentlemen, shall we join the ladies?" seemed to have fell unto the cutting room floor before the movie was released. Or at least I couldn't find it on the DVD. I thought it spent a little much time on her dotage, and not quite enough concerning her ten-plus years as PM.
"If you control the People by Government Acts and keep them in line with law and order they will refrain from doing wrong, but they will not have a sense of honour or shame. But if you lead them through virtue and regulate them by the laws of propriety they will have a sense of shame and will attain goodness" Kung(Confucious) And then she had Pinochet over for a nice cup of tea!
Interesting. I love Maryl Streep and i want to watch this film also because I'm Argentinian and i want to see how they dealed with the England - Argentina issue about the Malvinas Islands, it will be very interesting to see how they portraited it in this movie so, let's see.
If you want to talk about politics then go to a forum. I don't care if you think Malvinas are Argentinian or British. And don't care if you think we hate English ppl. I have my ideas clear. But i'm here because Meryl Streep is AMAZING! So you all should stop arguing about something only goverment can take care of, cause people CAN'T (and that was the problem from the beginning), and start talking about how great was Meryl Streep performance in this movie. PS: So happy she won the Oscar!
Looks like a good flim she fought what she believed in i want to better myself you can do it if you want it. i live in surrey and she some people said she was hilter other people thought she was a saint.
@NataliaWeronikaD He, as I can understand, she cannot be nominated to the Oscars this year, because only movies released until Dec 31 of last year could be nominated, and the release of this on theaters will be until Jan 6 this year, but the initial release was on december, so I hope this year can be possible, but if not, next year could be. I really want her to win it.
The acting is so good I didn't notice it, I was so immersed in this film. Iron Lady has the all the hallmarks of a great film - including experiencing its "deja vu's" long after seeing it.
I worked in the engineering industry in England during the 70s and early 80s and I think many would agree the trade union's power posturing in those days was setting the country on the road to ruin. Unfortunately, it seems that to combat extremes you have to resort to extremes and Margaret Thatcher did just that. Although I'm no great fan of the Tory party, I think she she had a point.
@safwan321 - "war with the Falklands"? I wasn't aware that the British fought against the Falklanders. They expelled some illegal squatters who had invaded the Falklanders territory.
power drove her bat shit crazy. Out of all the terrible things she did to the working class the one that still shocks me the most was her attempts to destroy the trade unions, I don't care if she "overcame sexism" or was a "driven woman" you don't take away a persons right to stand up for themselves and say no to you.
Either there's the music from The Artist trailer at 1:50 of The Iron Lady one, or there's The Iron Lady trailer music at 1:30 of The Artist one. Anyway, something stinks.
@eamon480 I think you will find that most Brits never had a clue or understood what was going on in Ireland until the internet came along. The press was controlled as were the population way back when. So most never knew about the famine or Croke Park or any other shit what went on. It was reported different to what happened aswell.
well having lived through the thatcher era, i see this as a film and nothing else, meryl streep will b amazing, the reaction is the same to as to the argentine people when EVITA was staged and then filmed, but hey! i hate thatchers government, but look forward to seeing meryl at her best
She was extraordinary all right, extraordinarily evil and rightly despised by all right thinking people. I hope this film doesn't attempt to glorify her.
Have you ever looked at someone with lust? The Bible says that if someone hates another person they are a murderer (I John 3:15). Have you ever hated anyone? If you have answered, Yes, to the previous questions, then you have admitted that you are a liar, a thief, a blasphemer, an adulterer and a murderer and we’ve only looked at 4 of the 10 Commandments. If God were to judge you by this standard would you be innocent or guilty? You know you are guilty and deserving of an eternity in Hell.
@agus12360 It doesnt The Falklands were taken by the French originally then the Spanish and eventually Britain but before Argentina was recognized as an independent nation So technically Argentina has no legitimate claim over sovereignty but culture might but valid but seeing as the people on the islands want to be British and have voted for UK control in every plebiscite 1771-1776 it was British then 1829-31 was Argentine 31-32 American 1832-33 Argentine then 1833-2012 British.
@agnana1978 Maggie was the best prime minister we ever had. she turned us from a basket case like Greece is now to restore us as a world power and a booming economy.
And let's not forget the fruits of her loins. Her son Mark was found guilty and imprisoned for his part in a failed coup in Equatorial Guinea whilst her daughter Carol became embroiled in a race scandal when she refered to a black tennis player as a 'golliwog' and then refused to apologise on the grounds that she didn't think it was offensive. Like I said previously, it's all just Schadenfreude for me haha.
@solay78 Maggie was the best PM we've had in the post war, she turned this country around and made it richer, stronger and more aware on the world stage, she defended British territory and was a key role in the end of the cold war. I almost cried watching this movie! 5 STARS!!!!
I did ! The last piece ,aaaa where Denis walks away
AHhhhhh!! Meryl Streep is one of my favourite actresses. She is amazing :) She always nails her parts.
Went to see this movie yesterday, a Masterpiece by the one & only Streep, the Mount Everest of actors! Perfect casting throughout; Brilliant in every respect. Highly recommended.
My dad at 0:41! (He's the guy on the right with the black glasses that's not holding the paper) 😄😄😄😄😄😄

He is a very handsome man

Meryl Streep is one of the top 5 actresses of the last 50 years. This movie shows it once again.

@JohnsonProducrtion the last one is called "Almost martyrs", from another movie. the other two I don't know.

thank you very very much!!
I don't see Meryl Streep at all, I see a Margaret Thatcher portraying herself.
@safwan321 - "war with the Falklands"? I wasn't aware that the British fought against the Falklanders. They expelled some illegal squatters who had invaded the Falklanders territory.
@TheBigCheese315 Erm, perhaps because the greatest actress of her generation accepted the role?
She was quite the hard-ass...Iron lady seemed too soft a term even...LOL. Looking forward to seeing this flick. Another nomination for Streep!! :)
Meryl Streep can play Batman and be right for the role.

Yet, you cannot spell her name. I think you mean Meryl Streep.

@solay78 Maggie was the best PM we've had in the post war, she turned this country around and made it richer, stronger and more aware on the world stage, she defended British territory and was a key role in the end of the cold war. The Belgrano was in the zone of where it could be targeted and the Admiralty thought she would come back round and attack West Falkland along with the other 2 argie ships near her, so she did the correct thing given the circumstances and the war was won!

Vrry british. Very Margaret. Thatcher!
looks like a decent movie but thatcher was terrible leader whose quest for super conservatism meant that she was a hated figure amongst the working public. Moreover she had a hint of neo- imperialism when she went to war with the falklands
decent movie? it's one of the best movies which i saw since became a boxxy software user... it's about everything... politics, woman and power! i need more movies like this and fortunately i have them just using boxxy software user
@wedgy4lifeyep, I think British themselves suffered because of her
I really likke maryl streep, and maybe she deserve an Oscar for this character. But I do blame her for such a bad taste in here, trying to make Thatcher looks like a misunderstood woman. What we should wait now, a movie about a misunderstood Bush, with learning problems..NO NO NO.
@adamsworld2k8 - "Fascism" may be an ideology; it's also a tired, over-used word beloved of the left. It's used to silence any opposition to their own dogma, without having to resort to the inconvenience of argument. As such, it is used liberally when referring to anyone left of centre.
