Nick Zentner | July 20, 2022 CWU's Nick Zentner manages to get atop Aasgard Pass on his 60th birthday. Aasgard Pass: goo.gl/maps/G9... Colchuck Lake Trailhead: goo.gl/maps/AX...
Thank you for the video! I am 63 now but in my teens I went on several multi day trips into the Enchantments back when there were no restrictions. Typical pack on those trips was 52 pounds and came in through Snow Lakes. Scrambled up many of the peaks in the area. We did one day trip up Aasgard in the fall to photograph the Larch as they turn gold and I can attest it is the most difficult day hike I have done. We got up there and ran around taking pictures like the crazy kids we were. Pro tip; wear sturdy hiking boots in and out but bring some light shoes to walk around when you get there. Well worth the small weight! Spectacular place to be on a full moon with all that white granite you can just hike around at "night" like it was daylight!
Nick Good effort. I've done Enchantments as a day hike from Colcuck Lake TH to Snow Lake TH via Aasgard and Pursik Passes. That has to be in the 10 ten best hikes on the planet. You definitely want to go over Aasgard first because it nearly all down hill back to Icicle Creek from there. If you have two vehicles, it should take you roughly the same time to do the "loop" as it did for the round trip to Aasgard. The descent past the Snow Lakes is easier than the descent out of Aasgard. As a bonus, you traverse the Enchantments without the need for a permit and a heavy pack.
Always great to listen to you and your videos. I drive through Ellensburg on my way down to see my daughter and grandson in Portland. Driving from Oliver BC just a few miles north of Osoyoos BC/ Orville WA.
Great video - beautiful place! What a lovely way to spend your birthday. Nice to see Mt Baker from a different perspective. Where I walk I can see it's northern flank. Baker is such wonderful landmark on the horizon and certainly one of my favourites.
Wow! So impressed with that view along with some envy of your ability to climb to that elevation. My hiking days are over, so to see such a view through your eyes is a real joy. Many happy returns of the day, Nick.
“What are the names of the lakes…what are the names of the peaks? I have no idea!”🤣. We really appreciate your wife’s patience, as she shares you with us. Congrats on the climb and a nod for your 60th as well. Thanks Nick. GREAT parting shot!
Happy Birthday... only 60... nice views... they are a lot for me to play with for backgrounds... my own little 'new thing I did yesterday ' ... to charge my truck battery with solar power at the blood draw place. Nice and sunny and the solar panel on a very good solar day with a reflector (too small for the 100 watt panel) was helpful. I did get home under my own power... and your posting this video is a good way to say you made it back from your adventure too.
Happy birthday Nick🥳 Bet you didn't predict that you would become a social media star climbing a summit and filming content at age 60! What more could you ask for?... Doing what you love with the ones you love most- Liz and 45,000 of your closest friends on a 95 million year old chunk of granite! 😉. btw, July 20th happens to be our anniversary. We plan a hike every year just the two of us, just to remind us that marriage is hard and as with every year, so does the effort. But if you accept the challenge you'll be rewarded with a phenomenal view you've never seen before and a perspective that has helped you grow. Our favorite place was where you got bit by the geology bug, Glacier National Park. While the bears are usually pretty active up there, the Alpine meadows at Logan Pass are in full bloom. Risk, reward. How can you not go? We celebrate 22yrs. Keep climbing, Happy Trails.🐾
Happy belated birthday Nick. Like many others I am indebted to you for revealing the wonderful nature of Washington, both geology and scenery. And also best wishes to Liz for her inexhaustible patience and willingness to share your rambles with us. A truly impressive hike. 🐻
I am a lifelong resident of Washington state. Aside from the geology knowledge. I think my favorite thing about Nick's videos is that I get to see amazing places that I have never been to (less than 2 hours from where I live), and also see places that I have been to 20 times in a completely new light. Thanks again for another stunning video postcard - you could freeze this video at almost any point and have a picture that wouldn't look out of place framed on a wall.
Good for you Nick, you are mighty strong and so is your wife! be proud you did that hike its amazing. Wishing you a very happy birthday to my favorite U tube teacher. I love you , I bless you, I appreciate all that you bring to us. You are the light of this world.
4400 feet! I don't care how long it takes you, that's pretty serious. I've only done that on a bicycle, and that, on my very best days. Never done that much on foot. Barely half. Very nice, and I love that Liz is the stronger hiker! I am a lifelong feminist and believer in not necessarily assigning roles to anyone. And I love the respect and the difference you give her when you explain your filming endeavor.👍✌️ thanks for filming it, I don't see that kind of stuff down here in Southern California. I have seen it in my youth in the Sierra, but that was a very long time ago
Thank you for taking us along on your birthday hike! 4,400 feet of elevation change is a major accomplishment! I'd need (ok, want) a few days up there to recover before heading down... Thank you, Liz, for sharing this special hike, and Nick's birthday celebration with us. For those of us in Ohio, who don't have such scenery, or geology, to marvel at, it really is a treat.
Awesome as always! I returned from a family gathering near where you grew up and I was born. I now have since the 90’s a piece of dirt in the Cascades and drive the country you feature and I call home. I’ve gained so much perspective and with peers or on a flight over Cascades mention your insights, it is always remarkable and fascinating. Thank you Nick and continue your mission. BTW every time I drive by the Liberty Cafe in a Nick voice I say “ Have a cup of Joe at the Liberty Cafe!! Best wishes on your B Day!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my favorite geology Professor ! Wishing you a long, healthy, and and happy life with your beautiful wife at your side ! Here is to another 60 years of success, hiking, and geology ! We, the passionate students of Geology truly love this charming and young Professor ! ❤❤❤
Luckily j was the first viewer today, which fulfilled my bucket list. I enjoyed our cool walk, too hot to journey out and about in SoCal today. Say hi to all who join us on this walk.
Happy Birthday Nick! I so enjoy your informative videos showing us the geology and terrains of Washington east of the Cascades. The volcanic beauty there is enchanting.
Wow! I am amazed at how beautiful this rugged land is. Thank you for the opportunity to view the area. I am 64 and would never have been able to do this. Happy Birthday. Safe travels. Thank you Liz for sharing this hike with us. 🥰🥰
Happy Birthday 🎂🥳🎉🎈🎁🎊🎂! Glad you two got to spend some quality time outdoor together! Thanks for letting us have yet another view of the 91Million year old local pluton, and Baker to boot! Hope it was a wonderful day!
Beautiful Day, just like here snow hanging on.Yet the Fire Hazard is pushing into the Red Zone in the Valleys. Alpine is at its Most Beautiful with the retreating snow. Happy Birthday. You earned your Birthday Cake 🎂 with that Scramble today. Cheers
Happy 60th Birthday Nick! 🎊🎈🎉🎂🎁 Beautiful area! Thank you for bringing us this spectacular video! 💕💕 I think us Zentnerds (love whoever came up with that!) can honestly say, we love you too! ❤️
Did the trek up to Snow Lake in ‘72 at 30 years. Sore for a week. Especially the shins from braking down hill. One of my lifes’s best moments. 50, huh. Damn fine effort Nick.
Happy Birthday youngster "I'm all used up from the hike up here" hahah ! You weren't even breathing hard carrying the camera up to give us even more beautiful views of the area ! Thank you , wonderful People !
I would have guessed that you were at least 10 years younger. It must be these mountain hikes that keep you young. Happy birthday from one old man to another.
Thank you for patience and sharing your personal time Liz, we Really appreciate it! Amazing place, didn't expect it to be such a stunning visual Happy Birthday Nick , Thank you for bringing us along 🙂
Last time I saw Lake Colchuck and the Colchuck glacier was 1974…on a hiking and fishing expedition… my friend and his father for 4 days. Great fishing just below the CCC dam on Lake Colchuck. Lake Stuart had better fishing the year before. Bravo Nick!!
I haven't done hikes like that in a couple of decades.. They would probably kill me now.. and I am probably only 10 years older than you... if that.. Well done son! That is what you get for having a young strong wife that loves to hike.. Thanks though.. I had forgotten how beautiful it can be up in the mountains..
Stunning views! Thank you Liz for your patience, we really do appreciate it! I owe you a cool refreshing beverage for all your patience if I ever meet you too. Happy birthday Nick! That was an interesting view of the Ingalls, it seems so out of place just poking out right there but from your drawing I'm assuming there is a lot more underground yet to be exposed.
To your last q about which way to go....the "classic" route is snow lake to colchuck lake...but that's like 6-7k elevation gain. Happy birthday NICK!! I was a ranger in the enchantments in 1988 and 1989. Back then most folks hiked the loop up Colchuck to Asgard (which we dubbed the bad and hard) and down through Snow Lake
Happy Birthday Nick. Great place to spend it. I was up there a few years ago. Beautiful place but it is a work out for sure. Great job getting up there. Your 60 years young. The peak in your ending shot as you look to the north over the pass on the left hand side is called Dragon tail. Kinda looks like a sleeping Dragon. Great job. Thank you for the memories
As usual, I am living vicariously through your efforts. Appreciate all your tours of the area. You are the real jem. Thanx Nick, Happy b day? Greetings from windy and hot South Dakota.
Happy birthday Nick! Thanks so much for what you do and what you share with us! I can never get tired of seeing your hiking videos and of course all the geology related stuff. I flew to Vancouver from Ottawa at the end of last month with my mother and drive through the mountains to Calgary. Seen Mt. Baker in the district and was thrilled to be close to Washington State. Maybe one day I'll get there! Cheers!
4500 feet elevation climb is a lot. Almost one mile. You should use 2 walking sticks instead of just one. I cant imagine hiking without both of my walking sticks. Sure is pretty being up at the tops of the mtns. Happy 60th birthday Nick.

Happy Birthday Nick!! You're a punk kid to me... at 72. (ha ha) ... So appreciate your episodes! I love the stories you tell and that they take me to other ways of understanding my surroundings and my life. Thank you!!
What a beautiful birthday gift! The hike may have pushed you to your limit but your reward was well worth the effort. Birthday hikes are a special thing and I hope you have many more to come. Happy 60th, celebrate your inner youth, and cherish the life that brought you to where you are today!
I've done the hike to Colchuck Lake multiple times. I did the Enchantments backpacking twice and Aasgard Pass is the most challenging part. Congratulations on making up there. I never descended Aasgard Pass as we always only hike up and descend towards Snow Lake trailhead. Must be scary going down Aasgard with the steepness and loose dirt.
Mid July 1980 was my climb up Aasgard Pass. The most difficult day of hiking in my life but the start of my most wondrous backpack trip of my life. At that time I was told 32 pounds should be my heaviest load. Well I had 36 pounds in my pack. It was the first day of an 8 day Enchantments trip. We came out Snow Lakes. It is so amazing up there. At that time Aasgard was considered a climbers trail not a hiking trail. Going down that hill was more dangerous than going up so most would go up it then out Snow Lakes. I don't know if the trail is improved since then. I am very impressed that you did it as a day hike to the top and out. It was a year or two later that the permit system was put into effect for going into the Enchantments . What a thrill to see this video. Thanks from this old woman's heart.
Happy birthday, Nick and many to come! I am tipping my hat to you on accomplishing this hike! No mean feat, sir! And thank you for having us and showing us the beauty of the views up there. I love the fact that when hiking through the mountains at every turn the view can be entirely different and can take your breath away (if the climb hasn't done so already 😉). Here's to your health and that of your loved ones (and Liz in particular).
Thank you for the video! I am 63 now but in my teens I went on several multi day trips into the Enchantments back when there were no restrictions. Happy birthday Nick!! Love ya buddy!

Congratulations on your climb and happy birthday! We love you, Nick.

Happy Birthday Nick and thanks for all the virtual trips I get to enjoy because of all you do to educate us.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY NICK !! what a beautiful place thanks for the look at 91 million year old granite looks like a Star Trek episode scene!
To your last q about which way to go....the "classic" route is snow lake to colchuck lake...but that's like 6-7k elevation gain.
Starting from Stuart Lake/Colchuck Lake trailhead and ending at snow lake tends to be the preferred route nowadays - especially for those that complete the whole ~22-24 miles in a single day - since the total gain is "only" (lol!) ~4k ft and there's no more up after completing Aasgard Pass.
I backpacked it once in '18 during larch season...it was absolutely stunning but ungodly cold at night even with gear...and I personally would not want to ever do Aasgard down with a 50+ lb pack like we had. Happy Belated Birthday! This place looks like the playground of Scandinavian Gods!
Wow that's beautiful. Thank you, professor 👍🏼💐

I love the fact that when hiking through the mountains at every turn the view can be entirely different and can take your breath away (if the climb hasn't done so already 😉).
Here's to your health and that of your loved ones (and Liz in particular).
Happy Birthday. The most beautiful place!
Happy Birthday Nick! Love your videos, including the old blackboard presentations. Keep up the good work!
