Real hip hop headz like myself held her to very high standards under Premier production next to MC Lyte, Lin Que & Lauryn Hill. Kollage album is a classic one for the culture and Illadeph
Me too bro I miss the real female rappers of the 90 it will never be the same we just have to reminisce the good old days i was only 17 years old when this song came out now im a 40 year old man I still play my 90 hip hop music
Remnzt6Reloaded womans like bahamadia or heather b released her debut album months before the lil kim and foxy brown bullshit albums in november 1996. kim and fox only ha mire attention
Not only is she one of dopest rappers I've ever heard, but probably one of the best females voices I've heard in any music. She is rapping low, even quiet, yet at the same time I find myself standing to attention. It's like she's both talking soft yet loud, but in the good sense. I can't believe I only discovered her recently, such a smooth character.
I loved Bahamadia's flow. I didn't define her lyricism from a female perspective like a lot of people have done but I felt like she was a cut above the rest and could do her thing in more ways than one. Plus, she had one of the tightest and beautiful Afro's that I witnessed during that mid-90's era!
Joseph Archibong This doesn't represent the totality of 90's hip-hop though. This song was more a part of the short-lived "smooth era" which didn't last long enough in my opinion. This short little era sat in between the loud angry Onyx-style and the head-slasher Wu Tang style.
AllPro777 What do you define as the "Smooth Era" and who do you consider part of that era. I feel like her kind of rap is a part of a thread that lasted mostly through the 1990's (this came out in 95 I believe) but Tribe started this in 1990 and this style basically died in 1997/1998 when everyone was trying to take the crown left by Biggie and Tupac. But there was "smooth' hip hop all through the 1990's. The Onyx Style was kind of like a 91-93 kind of thing. Wu Tang to me was a mix of all hip hop styles. They started out rugged and just kept refining their sound. They stayed rugged but brought you so much in between that.
Julian Hills The B.U.M.S., Heavy D (97 version of Heavy D), Bahamadia, Digable Planets, etc. I'm looking moreso at 95-ish through 97-ish where a lot of it was hitting, but you could pick out joints from other years in the 90's that would fit. I just felt like there was a shorter period where more of it was hitting than other times, but maybe that's just my perception.
I made this song in Berlin, I was listening Bahamadia, Neneh Cherry, MC Guru, Premier.. and back in the days (no so far) a lot of people was sampling ATCQ, or maybe some salt n p. but Bahamadia for me was, and is the 1. The first song I heard was Rugged Off. So.. I was in Berlin with this minimal house or techno scene, thinking in some rap roots, and she was the first thing in my mind. the name its philypop for Philadelphia, she's from there... whit respect, just trying to bring people from electronic scene to know the queen. 🙏🏽I wish new generation listen bahamadia.
Crazy how hip hop isn’t like this anymore and female /male rappers now days only rap about their ... money and chasing niggas I’m so happy I’m 16 and my parents educate with the 90’s 🙏🏾
She is one of the most slept on Mcs. Easily in my top 5 female mcs of all time. Her flow in this video was just smooth and fluid. Whoever produced this beat, needs a hi-five and pat on their back because this beat is ridin! I just listen to this song forever. Big ups to everyone that helped put Philly on the map...was wondering when yall were gonna blow the doors open.
So I have never heard of this artist before and I am a big hip hop fan so this is like finding gold, wow this is literally the inspiration for lil Kim’s crush on you, that’s insane that’s so slept on, I discovered her from lava la rues letra song where she says she is influenced by her. Both artists are brilliant can hear how she inflicted so many artist can’t wait to delve further into your discography

True.
