T.P.-- You're one of my very favorite political commentators. Although originally from Oregon, I lived in Texas for three years in the mid to late 80's. And I witnessed, first hand, that whereas the folks of Texas tend toward the conservative & to the right, it's far from a 100 % done deal. Particularly in the cities, there are blue pockets as deep as you can imagine. And speech is the same. Out in the country & in small towns, the southern drawl is a surefire thing. People there grew up talking a certain way, & that's how they're going to speak until their dying day. It's different in the cities, though. In Denton & Dallas, where I passed my three years in Texas, American accents were as varied as can be. I heard plenty of what I took to be a neutral, "normal" American accent, as typified by a lifetime Chicago resident; plenty of California almost normal twang, & plenty of East Coast accents sounding like New York or Boston, & swinging back down south to Mississipi, Georgia or Alabama to catch some deep southern drawls. All this & more, in the diverse cities of Texas. Texas is a huge state, geographically, & there must be at least a dozen distinct accents just within the state. Texas Paul, your speech is beautiful, & I could listen to you all day, not only for the rich content but because I find your speech cadence very agreeable. All of the above is just to say, you sound as authentically Texan to me as anyone else. So go ahead with your moniker & continue as Texas Paul, as far as I'm concerned.
