We sent them to the gulags after the war as criminal punishment, 10-25yr. sentence (depending on rank) so they could rebuild everything they destroyed. POW camps were nothing more than prisons, gulags were prisons dedicated for forced labourers - before and after this period they primarily housed ordinary criminals/saboteurs who were carrying out their sentences, Unfortunately, our leadership after Stalin was weak and revisionist, and allowed German POWS to return home in 1955 while many of our cities, towns, and roads were still rubble. Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, UK, and France used German POW labour as well - for clearing mines, construction, or agriculture. But the deliberate and total devastation brought down on our country required a much large labour force, and more time, to fix. Luckily, many of the fanatical German officers that we captured were sentenced to death in court - mostly by Soviet and some were extradited for trial in Poland. My grandfather actually witnessed this himself, in 1946 central Kiev tens of thousands of people amassed in the town square to watch 8 of the most notorious Nazi officers be hung. They had been responsible for Babyn Yar Massacre, he told how the crowds were cheering and smiling.
He never ages, at the expense of suddenly being transported to any ongoing battle in history, he also can never die so he is doomed with the constant suffering of combat with no seeming end

My great grandfather fought in curland and was captured by the Soviets and held in Russia tell the 50s. This hits home
