In the early morning hours, on side streets and street corners, Hanoi's hard-working cooks begin setting up their pho stations. A soup, a meal, a national treasure-pho is a widespread addiction. Many Vietnamese start the day with a steaming bowl of this divine noodle soup. The essence of pho is a beefy consommé flavored with charred onions and ginger, rock sugar and star anise.
This woman has such broad and deep knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine. I really appreciate hearing her talk!
Over the last 3 years Pho has absolutely exploded in popularity in Moscow. Its all over the place. And no wonder. This broth speaks warm words of love to your heart. I consider myself an addict for years now. Also being a huge soup lover, I could literally eat this every day
Thank you for the video. I am from a family of northern Vietnamese and my ancestral family was from Hanoi. Cooking and the history of cooking is my passion. I would like to share something about pho that many people do not know. Pho is from north Vietnam. We never put sugar into our pho broth in beef or chicken pho (hoisin sauce will sweeten your broth). Chicken pho was actually a much more luxury food. Chicken and chicken eggs were one of the most expensive food a Vietnamese can eat so in Vietnam back before the 80s, to top a bowl of pho with a poached egg was like putting caviar on your toast. ALSO, the reason why sugar was added in the south is that many south Vietnamese dish incorporate sugar into their cooking. During the war, food was scarce so to stretch a pot of pho broth, people started to put sugar and a whole daikon into their broth and even dried squid to add a sweetness to the broth to mask the lack of beef bones and meat. Because of that, many people cook pho different ways. However, a true bowl of pho should never have sugar added.
As a regular old American, I LOVE this food. I love all of their food.
Being of Vietnamese decent, this is my comfort food. I have and can eat it everyday. I sometimes eat it as breakfast, lunch and dinner.
+Fun Stuff as can I & I am not even vietnamese.
soups have become under appreciated in american culture in the past 25 years. This is something I make at least 2x per week.
Pho is probably the greatest dish mankind has ever came up with
Fun Stuff
Yes it is so good. I like it spicy, that seems to help bring out all of the flavors.
I stayed at a hotel once where there was a Vietnamese restaurant next door. I had delicious pho for 3 days in a row! I was in heaven! Now I know why. Great video!
She is soo knowledgeable and informative. Love her!
Pho is just....heavenly
My Mom use to own Pho Restaurant in Viet nam we use that much spices for a very very big pot of soup for about 300 bowls of soup .
I have cooked a lot of pho. I have ate a lot of pho. I love it so much that my friends cook it for me for every celebratory / special occasion meal. This is exactly the way that I was taught to make it 25 years ago.
You just don't know how eager I am to be able to prepare this dish. It is an extreme favorite of mine. I had a tennis partner for 6 years from Vietnam, once he introduced me to this heavenly healthy meal, I at least order out twice a week. 4 times a month. Thank you !
I dearly miss a restaurant I would visit every chance I could. They changed over the years because of popularity, but in the beginning they would simmer their broth for 3 days. It was so incredible, I never looked back and loved Asian food since. I miss that place. You can never go home again.
Pho is the best street food around the word
We have visited Vietnam several times and Pho in Vietnam is just incomparable. Probably, the availability of the local ingredients like fresh herbs and noodles, make the divine noodle soup in Vietnam become exceptionally delicious.
I like when she said " to throw the rest of the spices in the pot" like translation waste not want not. I love this broth cooked slowly. I really appreciate her explaining everything. This is definitely something people healing their stomach issue should consider and do. This will give my stomach lining a great immunity boost. I think I'm in love haha 😊 I love cooking food over time like this. I will definitly try this. Thank you for sharing. 😸👍.
She is the best pho chef I've ever watched!
This is my absolute favorite dish. Right now I'm in the process of making it myself for the first time. Can't wait to try it.

I can’t wait to try this recipe! I’ve been making Pho and this is so informative. Also, I want to go to Vietnam. I’m in love with this culture. Thanks!
Pho is the most genius food of all east Asia. Simple ingredients create such complex and comforting flavors, and it's subtle. It's just brilliant! I'd known a Japanese colleague for 5 years and he ate Pho for lunch every single day. But I get that totally. It's just too good.
Visited Vietnam a few years back and was a beautiful country. Pho was always the go-to dish
This woman is the real deal.
Mai Pham taught me how to cook after diagnosed Celiac. I thank you Mai. Anyone can do the same buying your Vietnamese- Thai cooking cookbook. A simple tonb of knowledge, wealth of experience and as witnessed in this video; attention to what is important to learn.❤️

Excellent in depth explanation chefs! Thank you!! I now understand why mine kept coming out too bitter. The herbs were left in too long. Now I know it should be more than 2-4 hours. So excited to try making it again. Would love some more explorations of Vietnamese food with you guys!! So great!! 💕
Thank you for your thorough tutorial. This is awesome!
I loved this demonstration...it took away from a lot of the mystery behind the GREAT PHO!~ Thank you for this!

Countries with Vietnamese presence introduced Pho to the locals and become an instant hit. In Australia, Pho soups is becoming everywhere now.

absolutely love it 👍. I love how you explain the method in layman's term so that it's easier to follow.
it's not only about having all the ingredients, but the application and sequence of each ingredient.
I know that it will take me time to fully understand the process and
constructing of the dish, but whats important, is trying to do it....
My friend introduced me to the Vietnamese cuisine and I became a Pho’s lover. I went to Vietnam last year and I visited every Pho’ restaurant during my stay over there. sorry mom your cook is nice however PHO’ is amazing.

Hands down the best pho recipe & explanations here on youtube. Thank u
By far my favorite Vietnamese dish. This is a very delightful video.
Simmering the beef bone broth with herbs over the night! Pho is probably the most elaborate, flavorful, and delicious (and the healthiest) soup in the food world.
Wow this is my favorite asian food. Can eat this dish all day long.
Thank you sooooo much for the video
Beautifully prepared and explained steps. Thank you for sharing!
The Vietnamese people are so friendly, so gracious, so lovely, so kind, so humorous, so welcoming. I LOVE VIETNAM! I am so thankful that this virus has not crippled them. They are good people, they are exemplary!!!!!
So many great little tips, thank you! I LOVE Pho 💟
very informative and Yes I'm making some tomorrow.
Really enjoyed you both conversing & making the dish 👍🏾
What is especially tasty in this dish, beside the broth, is the bones that after cooking for hours can actually soften so much that the hard bone can be eaten or chewed to squeeze out additional flavor. Then of course there is the gristle and collagen that gets so soft and yummy. I was "involved" in a Vietnamese restaurant in Honolulu in the 1970s.
There is a restaurant in Chicago that has the best pho I have ever tasted! I love it so much that I came here to learn it for myself.
I've always love Pho, It's one of my favorites!!
Every culture has its soup. And so far I haven't had a soup that I didn't like. They always have a delicious broth whether clear or cloudy. From Jamaican chicken foot soup, Japanese udon, Jewish matzah ball, to Vietnamese pho. It's all good!
Nice video; lots of great details. You answered my questions as they came up, while you talked about each stage. Good work.
Bahn Mi and Pho! The best of Vietnam! I love Vietnam, I would visit every year!
Your true about everyone in Vietnam love pho and rice (I call it gum or gom)
Thanks Mrs Mai Pham, very detail training for cooking pho:-D.

I'm from Perú , I am addicted to this soup.
In Vancouver, I wind up eating pho for dinner mostly or lunch on a day off, but it would be awesome if there were places open for breakfast. It would be a nice wintertime breakfast.
I was going to make pho at home once and went to the store to get some ox tails. I took one look at the price and thought, I could just walk down the street and get a huge bowl for $3.99. And it comes with cream puffs served before the soup!
Look delicious! I love all kinds of food & cooking! I would like to cook this recipe & I love herbs too! Im excited to plant some herbs in my garden for the 🍲! Thank you for the delicious recipe!
This is the most authentic way to cook Pho.
Genius👍 I love Pho 🍲 and I can eat it everyday.
I love the basil in my Pho but I do not break it up and eat it. I leave the leaves on the stem and let it steep in the bowl and that gives the perfect amount of flavor enhancement for me. You could probably roll the leaves in your hands before putting them in and that would be good also.
Man,, I call Pho the "Bowl of Happiness". Pho, Ramen, Udon, and Soba. I can't get enough!!!
The herbs is great especially it assist to settle the gastro-intestine in reduction of acidity due to over consumption of calories in our food.
At certain age, some people just no longer burn enough calories and having belching and flatulence issue during and also after their meal. So, the herbs really help a lot to prevent that.
Thank you so much for this detailed video of a dish that has become a revered addiction of mine :) I hope to travel to Vietnam soon. Hugs from Tel Aviv, Israel :)

I suppose if I were really hungry a bowl of hot water with some onions and spices would hit the spot. The 10 grams of beef in it would just be the icing on the cake.
She's using the Three Crabs brand of nouc mam/fish sauce. 😋🤗
