I bet that feels way faster than 200+ in a normal car. My family used to have a BMW Isetta and 80kmh in that thing felt like light speed.

We went 1974 to Baltic Sea Holidays 390 km at Sunday, 5 o'clock in the morning with a speed of 70km/h, no otther cars.
Less consumption at 6,5l/100km less noise, 2 stops for refreshing & picknic and 12 o'clock at the sea. No problem. We bought it for friendly 8500 Mark, 1964er Model in pastell green in very good condition. (The used car was 10 years old. Price for a new car was 10 000 Mark, but we had to wait 10 years from registration to delivery. A registration could bought for 3000 Mark.)
Top speed with inspected engine: 130km/h
Speed Limit was 80km/h on roads
    100km/h on Autobahn

I'm surprised the engine didn't explode while driving. It's a really fun car, but I didn't like the Trabant as a kid. Top video! Thanks. Happy New Year!🙂

In 1997, the first generation Mercedes A-Class failed the moose test, and a Trabant passed it flawlessly. Don't judge the Trabant too harshly - its creators really did the best they could considering what they had to work with and the pressure from the East German government.

    • @Ragnar8504

Which model L300 do you have? My parents have a 1996 GLX 2WD manual with the 51 kW 2.5D (4D56) engine and it can be pushed to 145 on the flat and my brother once tried 155 downhill. The pre-1986 models with 4-speed gearbox were slower and our previous 1988 van (same gearbox and engine as the '96 as far as I know) didn't go any faster than 130 either for some reason. I usually cruise at 120 though because beyond that you think you've got a hole in the tank. Once a year or so I give it the boot for a few km to clear out any soot.

It's a history already! But it was the reality back then. In my country, Hungary this was the car of the simple workers. You had to wait it for long years! You paid for it, then you were waiting it for 4 - 5 years. When somebody received it finally - usually NOT the color which he originally ordered, but who cares - it became a very - very important member of the family! The people went with it to the Lake Balaton or the Bulgarian seacoast on summers. On weekends they washed it with brush from bucket with shampoo in the parking of the block houses. They put fur cover on the steering wheel, there was a popular toy - dog, sitting behind the back window with rhythmically nodding head.

An old Hungarian joke from the past:
A Trabant breaks down on the motorway. A Ferrari stops next to it. The Ferrari driver tells the driver of the Trabant that he will tow it to the next petrol station, but if he is driving too fast, he should flash his lights. He starts to tow the Trabant when a Lamborghini pulls up beside them and drives past at full throttle. The Ferrari immediately follows the Lamborghini. A policeman spots them and reports it to headquarters:
    - They are racing on the motorway, with a Lamborghini in front, a Ferrari behind, and a Trabant following closely behind!
At the next checkpoint, another policeman reports:
    - The Lamborghini is only third, the Ferrari is first, and the Trabant is second, but it's all for nothing, the Trabant is flashing, it wants to overtake the Ferrari!
