  • Knot tying video tutorial. Learn how to make an icicle hitch knot. Easy step by step instructions in this guide.
The icicle hitch is a slide and grip hitch (friction hitch) used when a load is to be applied parallel to the rail it is attached to. It is very similar to the klemheist knot used in tree climbing.
Uses: lift a spar, grip a stake to be pulled out of the ground. grip te trunk of a small tree to be pulled out of the ground. Used when you need a longitudinal pull on a rail.
Advantages: Has a very strong grip and is not liable to slip.
Disadvantages: Most easily tied when you have access to the end of the post or rail you are tying to.
Related Knots: Prusik knot, Klemheist knot, tautline hitch, gripping sailor's hitch, pile hitch

Thanks. A couple of days ago I commented to somebody about tying to a smooth round bar so it won't slip and I told him to use Vise Grips. I didn't know the real answer or in fact that there was a real answer. So now I'll just bow my snarky head and crawl away.

One important thing you missed & that is the direction of load is in the direction of your wraps only. Pulling the other direction just helps it slide.

Good point, It’s not a Prusik!

This hitch is ugly and looks like it should not work well, but it has become one of my favorites.

Is this knot only tied with the Working ends free? or can it be tied with a loop of rope?
I remember a similar knot used by James Bond where, after being tossed off a mountain, he took off his shoelace tied a loop and wrapped it around the rope he was hanging from , stood up in the loop did the same knot with his other shoelace and then proceeded to climb up the rope sliding up one knot at a time . that is what started me into knots found a clip ruclips.net/video/8FDX6_BSas8/видео.html

This one is tied with the working ends free but is very similar to the klemheist knot which is tied with a loop and is used in climbing.

useless knot, when a rolling hitch can do!

Useful knot, if you want a friction hitch that doesn't slip like a rolling hitch.

I've used this to pull 3 200' 00 wire through conduit after the original pull strands broke right as it was exiting the conduit. Long story short: tapered, slick, lubed wires barely out of the conduit and pulled it all with the icicle hitch. Rolling hitch wouldn't budge this

@@cbell9100 Would recommend making this knot first, cover it with tape then lube....I had experiences that the jetline would just slip off...
