  • For many people in and outside the church, the name John Calvin is the namesake of a cold, hard theology called Calvinism. Yet for many others, John Calvin represents a hero of the faith who is worthy of being studied and honored five hundred years after his death. What has John Calvin really done for the church that he should deserve so much attention? In this message, Dr. Steve Lawson shows us that the benefits of Calvin’s contributions to the church and society at large are incalculable, as he discusses “The Legacy of John Calvin.”

Well done. I just finished reading Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion. Lots of delightful surprises. Now I have to use it to guide my spiritual life and Biblical studies...so I didn't really finish, just beginning. It is Christ centered, God centered, Holy Spirit centered. All the best things in Christianity. And not much about predestination at all. I think there are a lot wrong ideas and abuse of Calvin and "Calvinism." -The devils work to destroy something good.

Now you are getting it!!! After Calvin died, the man who preached in his pulpit subtly altered what John has been preaching & a brilliant young man, Armin tried to get things back in line with what Calvin was preaching, but his health caused his death & his teaching was voted out as heretical - hence the birth of Arminianism, which may be more in line with John Calvin, the nemesis of Calvinism.

+JlmHig Your comment - "A great yet humble man, thank God for sending Calvin."
My comment - John Calvin was a heretic who falsely taught that God is the author of sin and evil. Calvin was also a murderer as he justified his murder of Michael Servetus just because Servetus had a different view.
      1) "Thieves and murderers, and other evildoers, are instruments of divine providence, being employed by the Lord himself to execute judgments which he has resolved to inflict." From Calvin's "Institutes of the Christian Religion" - Book 1, Chapter 17, Paragraph 5.
      2) "The devil, and the whole train of the ungodly, are in all directions, held in by the hand of God as with a bridle, so that they can neither conceive any mischief, nor plan what they have conceived, nor how muchsoever they may have planned, move a single finger to perpetrate, unless in so far as he permits, NAY UNLESS IN SO FAR AS HE COMMANDS, THAT THEY ARE NOT ONLY BOUND BY HIS FETTERS BUT ARE EVEN FORCED TO DO HIM SERVICE." - John Calvin - Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 1, Chapter 17, Paragraph 11.
      3) "I admit that in this miserable condition wherein men are now bound, all of Adam's children have FALLEN BY GOD'S WILL." - John Calvin - Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter 23, Paragraph 4.
      4) "The first man fell because the Lord deemed it meet that he should." - John Calvin - Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter, 23, Paragraph 8.

JImHig John Calvin was a murderer as he justified his killing of Michael Servetus just because Servetus had an errant theological view. So, when is MURDER justified in the name of Christianity? Calvin basically emulated his idol, Augustine who also justified force/violence in maintaining the Satanic doctrine of Roman Catholicism.
In Calvin’s “Defense of the Orthodox Trinity Against the Errors of Michael Servetus” he advocated capital punishment stating, “whoever shall now contend that it is unjust to put heretics and blasphemers to death will knowingly and willingly incur their very guilt” - in “History of the Christian Church”, author Philip Schaff, Volume 8, page 79, 1910,
In Calvin’s 1561 letter to the marquis de Poet who was the high chamberlain to the King of Navarre Calvin states, “Honour, glory, and riches shall be the reward of your pains: but above all, do not fail to rid the country of those zealous scoundrels who stir up the people to revolt against us. Such monsters should be exterminated, as I have exterminated Michael Servetus the Spaniard.” - quoted in Voltaire, “The works of Voltaire”, volume 4, page 89, 1901, also quoted in “Ecclesiastical Researches” Church History Research and Archives, page 348, 1984, and also quoted in “History of the Donatists”, - David Benedict, Galatin, Church History Research and Archives, 1985.
Even 9 years later after the execution of Michael Servetus, Calvin still justified his murder of Servetus by stating, “And what crime was it of mine if our Council at my exhortation, indeed, but in conformity with the opinion of several churches, took vengeance on his execrable blasphemies?” - in “History of the Christian Church” author Philip Schaff, vol. 8, pages 690-691, 1910.
It is interesting to note that Augustine, who was Calvin’s idol whom Calvin emulated taught the same thing. Augustine states, “Why therefore, should not the Church use FORCE in compelling her lost sons to return, if the lost sons compelled others to their destruction?” - in City of God, On the Correction of the Donatists, chapter 6, section 23. This utterly false teaching of Augustine was based upon his perversion of Luke 14:23.
Augustine states, “It is indeed better(as no one could deny) that men should be led to worship God by teaching, than that they should be driven to it by fear of punishment or pain; but it does not follow that because the former course produces the better men, therefore those who do not yield to it should be neglected. For many have found advantage(as we have proved, and are daily proving by actual experiment), in being first compelled by fear or pain, so that they might afterwards be influenced by teaching.” - in City of God, On the Correction of the Donatists, Chapter 6, section 21.
There are many non Calvinists who see Calvin as a guilty murderer, but even among some Calvinists themselves that they see Calvin as a guilty murderer. William Cunningham states, “There can be no doubt that Calvin beforehand, at the time, and after the event, explicitly approved and defended the putting him to death, and assumed the responsibility of the transaction.” in “The Reformers and the Theology of the Reformation”, pages 316-317, 1967.
In modern times, we see John MacArthur, hyper Calvinist/Lordship Salvationist who holds the same mentality. In his book, “The Gospel According to the Apostles”, MacArthur makes the following statement revealing his hostility towards us Free Grace Christians, “Frankly, some mongrel species of Dispensationalism out to die, and I will be happy to join the cortege.” - page 205, bottom paragraph.
A “cortege” is a funeral procession and it is obvious that MacArthur is referring to us Free Grace Christians. So, when is force/murder justified in the name of Christianity? Throughout history, there was the Inquisition propagated by the Roman Catholic church, then we have the tortures, banishments, imprisonments, burnings at the stake enforced by John Calvin when he ruled Geneva, and now we have MacArthur who appears to hold the same view.

Interesting indeed!!! I love RC & Ligonier, a wealth of information but I could not agree with RC as amillennial & no Rapture, so I turned to John MacArthur as premillennial pre-trib Rapture - overall about 6 years.
Recently found "the perfect church" & all I hear with each expository scriptural preaching is how MacArthur defines how John Calvin explains the scripture . . . so I had to ask myself, "what does the scripture say?"
Found a video from Shepherds Conference 2022 or 2023: MacArthur with John Piper . . . MacArthur admitted he has been deceiving his congregation for over 40 years into 5-point Calvinism & not sure if they have caught on!!!
I don't know about you, but this concerns me greatly . . . more research of how John 3:16 is erroneously explained, John 6:44, Romans 9:-11: areas if Revelation, etc.
God is leading me away from Calvinism, though restful for beginning spiritual maturity, gotta recognize when it leads you astray from scriptural accuracy!!!

Listened to 39 minutes and am grateful to see Calvin honored. Indeed, I was struck by the quote from Spurgeon singing Calvin’s praises. Makes one anxious to sit at the feet of one who has himself sat at the feet of Jesus and his word. After 39 minutes, however, I lost interest because I felt that Dr. Lawson was attributing to Calvin things I feel are a bit of an over reach. For example, he spoke of Calvin being a forerunner in the institutional separation of church and state. Though Calvin believed that the Church should have the power of discipline and excommunication, rather than the state, he was also in favor of the leaders of Geneva executing punishment on Servetus for his heretical views (ultimately ending in him being burned alive).
Furthermore, Calvin believed that social orders were apart of Gods plan and should therefore be maintained. For example, he believed that the nobility were in their place by God and it should remain as such. This is certainly a different mentality that the freedom of mobility mentality in the US (atleast in her ideals).
These are a few examples that seemed to run contrary to my understanding of Calvin. Most of my knowledge is derived from Bruce Gordon’s, “Calvin” and various RUclips videos such as those by Ryan Reeves. I am no Calvin scholar and am open to having my critique, critiqued. God bless!

WOW, Steven . . . Such PASSIONATE, ENTHUSIASTIC, DRAMATIC, EMOTIONAL preaching of a sermon!!!
Sounds like hero worship to me, sounds like idolizing of John Calvin. Everything you say, "John Calvin said ..., John Calvin would say ... " but are you listening to yourself - John Calvin would be turning over in his grave because everything you say that John Calvin was trying to get across, you are doing to John Calvin & not to God!!!
"Give all Glory to God!" "In all things that you do, do it first for God!" But Steven, you are Glorifying John Calvin by speaking of John Calvin telling people to Glorify God - do you not hear this in everything you are saying???
Specifically @ 20 min. or so, you speak the phrase 2 or 3 times, " ... we are God's ..." even emphasizing it moreso by spelling it " ... capital G o d apostrophe s ... " I had to pause & go back, listen over again, go back farther & reposted to be sure I understood what you were clearly saying to keep it in proper context to NOT misunderstand . . . You SHOULD have phrased it, "We belong to God." vs. "We are God's."
From everything you are trying to inform us of, about John Calvin . . . he would not want to be the spotlight of Glory any more than Paul would have wanted to be . . . just as Apostle John was confronted in Revelation, not once but twice, by an angel . . . " Do NOT bow the knee to me, Do NOT worship me, but worship the Lamb of God, the Son of God . . . for I too am only a servant of God just as you yourself are. "
This is the entire problem with the religion of Calvinism today - too much emphasis on the MAN John Calvin who was trying to emphasize to both the Roman Catholic Church & to the Protestant Church - look to the Lord, Glorify God!!!

Away with all this honor of men ,John Calvin, Martin Luther, and all the reformers that were behind the slaughter of Ana-Baptist by the hundreds over infant baptism.

Also why did John Piper, Randy Alcon, Doug Wilson and others put on a several day show promotion of CS Lewis? What going on with you people? Lewis taught that a man’s service to the devil would be counted as service to Christ and would be in heaven!

Pastor Steven Lawson: I Sincerely Disgree in an area of Calvinism, although I realize I am so far from the wisdom I need. 1st My Prayer and request: Have your Church pray for me to be downloaded with Grace upon Grace and the wisdom and discernment, with God's peace for me and my Family & that I may come to the full knowledge and Truth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and that I be set Ablaze to stand for Truth no matter the consequences, and branded with a zeal to soak myself in The Word of God, and a much deeper love for prayer like a David Brainerd or more in Jesus Name. Amen...please explain if I am wrong...I agree with most of Calvin's teachings and in some aspect of Calvinism...but I am at an impass on one very important thing. In my humble opinion...We are to pursue to be in the "likeness of god." Small "g"...although one might see this as a small matter, I Do Not! For to use, or obtain the big "G" in God's, or to call ourselves God's...are we not...in a frail attempt trying to become God, or God's as Calvin puts it? Therefore once we've obtained this (IMO) unattainable feat..it seems as though we would BE Gods.(Calvins Words). This I know Must anger some?! But how can we even begin to demoralize The God who with a whisper flung the stars into eternity, and spun the earth with His Breath until His Return....by using the big G, as though we know His thoughts, or are coming even close to knowing his ways? Are We not in a frail attempt putting The One True God in a humanistic box by becoming "G"od's?!? (As Calvin states it?) For who can even stand in His presence, or wrap our minds around Him? So to be God's in my humble opinion is an insult, due to there's no earthly words man can utter to begin to describe Him. This is even scary to put in writing. You're 2nd definition of Calvin saying that sounded as though to hide one's true thoughts. How can a man stay humble once he reaches this pinnacle?!? No offense meant my dear Sir, for I know I am unworthy to even debate this matter, but it just leaves a bad sound in the ears. A quote of mine is this...
"The intellect of Man Complicates The Simplicity of God." -Gerald One may even point out that I may have that quote backwards...but you reverse the quote and the meaning remains the same. Simply put...Man at his best... will never know God...till the glass is removed. Consider with love, and trying to truly understand.
We need a fire brand now unlike never before. Dear Sir: I love your passion...My discernment and my fear is that this time due to America is overflowing with iniquity, it may take many dying for The Gospel before we see a True Revival. I feel in The Church evil has crept in and we have been living freely on the prayers of our ancestors. I fear it will take persecution to get The Fire Started in The Church of America if it's God's will to let her continue-Gerald Wilson

To speak against Jean Cauvin's words or writing was a death sentence, preceded by torture in a number of cases. With nobody daring to correct or challenge his "theology" he charged full speed ahead making up his own interpretation or definitions. Recently I took several passages where I knew the correct translation/interpretation plus the backstory. Then read Cauvin's commentaries on them. Yow! What shocker! Translations way off the rails, interpretations even further, changes definitions, takes stuff out of context then takes another text out of context then mashes them together into another out of context place. And if he didn't have a passage to pull out, he grabs stuff from thin air and presents it as gospel, which nobody will dare to question anyway.
Now I know why his philosophical system with paper thin veneer of "theology" is so messed up, effecting so many people's lives in terribly negative ways.

IF you believe scripture in "that there is NONE that seeketh after God" then what was the human action or thought or decision you did in the your flesh to be saved? At what time of day and date did you choose to be born again?
Or what time, date in Eternity did the Lord call or appoint you to be born again, since you would have been a sinner who was included in "there is NONE...
IF you believe scripture as infallible & without error then how do you intepret words like "elect, election, the called, predestinated to this..., ordained, predestinate, and people which He foreknew," AND there is Romans chp 9's explanation to us.
Has it not been explained in Scripture that it is God who blinds the eyes and hardens the heart so that...why?? At what time in God's eternity did he make that decision?

John Calvin was born Jean Cauvin in 1509 in Noyon, France.
His father Gérard Cauvin was severe. And controlling. He was a registrar of the government of Noyon, a solicitor in the ecclesiastical court, fiscal agent of the county, secretary of the bishopric, and attorney of the cathedral chapter. All that made him a government bureaucrat, a legal officer, and a religious boffin rolled into one. The worst kind of control freak, a religious one.
Let’s just say, Gérard Cauvin liked to be obeyed.
Calvin’s mother died when he was a child, leaving him under the control of the pedantic and imposing Monsieur Cauvin, who had decided that it would do his career no harm at all for him to hand his three sons - Charles, Jean, and Antoine - over to the church to become priests. There would be no negotiation.
He secured for them the best education available, insisted they fraternize only with the children of prominent families in Noyon, and fixed them up with ecclesiastical patrons.
When Calvin was only 12, his father had a tonsure shaved into his head, and he was told he was to report for duty as the chaplain to the altar of La Gésine in the cathedral of Noyon. He had been apprenticed into the family business - religion.
In 1523 he was sent to university to undertake theological studies in preparation to enter the priesthood. There, he excelled.
But a few years later, the domineering Gérard Cauvin fell out with the Catholic authorities in Noyon. Bitter and vindictive, he told Calvin to abandon theology. He was taking his sons back from the church!
Gérard Cauvin now thought a legal career would be more lucrative for the family than an ecclesiastical one. Compliant and heartbroken, Calvin left Paris to attend the University of Orleans to study law.
Calvin hated the law, but he submitted to his contrarian father and slogged his way through four years of study, until in 1531 he was released from his servitude. Gérard Cauvin had died.
Calvin was now free to return to theology. And the rest, as they say, is history.
But the apple hadn’t fallen far from the tree. By the time John Calvin had ascended to power in Geneva, he had become precisely the kind of legalistic, religious bureaucrat his father had been.
Like Gérard Cauvin, he didn’t take kindly to being disagreed with. He routinely referred to his critics as pigs, riffraff, dogs, idiots, stinking beasts, and impudent donkeys (that last one was reserved for the peace-loving Anabaptist, Menno Simons).
His treatment of his theological opponents is well known. Michael Servetus was executed by being burned at the stake. Calvin rejected any suggestion he was too harsh on Servetus by claiming that he had wanted to behead him instead (it was quicker and therefore more “merciful”).
Luckily for another critic, Jacques Gruet, he got the “merciful” treatment and was beheaded. Jerome Bolsec was imprisoned, as was Pierre Ameaux, who was also paraded through Geneva on his knees to confess his sin of daring to disagree with Calvin.
Gérard Cauvin’s son ruled with an iron fist. Between 1542 and Calvin’s death in 1564, there were 76 banishments. In one year, there were 414 prosecutions for moral offences (which included wearing the wrong color clothing or banned hairstyles or not naming your sons after Old Testament characters).
When a plague swept through Geneva, 14 women were executed as witches for apparently persuading Satan to send the disease.
Calvin’s own step-daughter and son-in-law were condemned for adultery and executed.
On the occasion of his wife Idelette’s death, Calvin eulogized her with, “From her I never experienced the slightest hindrance.” That was love-talk, coming from him.
Sebastian Castellio, a former friend of Calvin, who fell out with him over a point of theology, once remarked, “If Christ himself came to Geneva, he would be crucified. For Geneva is not a place of Christian liberty. It is ruled by a new pope, but one who burns men alive…”
The 18th Century Genevan philosopher, Jean Jacques Rousseau described Calvin this way:
“Who was ever more caustic, imperious, strong-willed and more divinely infallible, according to his own opinion, than Calvin? For him the least opposition, the least objection that someone dared to present was always considered a work of Satan, a crime deserving to be punished by fire.

Here is the problem. Calvin writes this about Servetus, "Servetus wrote to me a short time ago, and sent a huge volumeof his dreamings and pompous triflings with his letter. I was to find among them wonderful things, and such as I had never before seen; and if I wished, he would himself come. But I am by no means inclined to be responsible for him;and if he come, I will never allow him, supposing my influence worth anything,to depart alive." He did it appears intend harm to him. And it is true that Servetus was indeed a bad egg with heresy at hand. However, Jesus healed the guard arresting him after Peter cut off his ear. Peter thought the use of force even deadly warranted to defend the faith. Jesus thought otherwise. Paul said, "Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will learn the truth." 2 Tim 2:25. the historical precedence MacArthur and other theologians give Calvin a pass on does not work in light of the spirit of the gospel as demonstrated by Christ himself and his immediate followers.

I used to think that John Calvin is a cruel totalitarian that rule geneva with iron fist, and question his motive on why he want servetus dead because it is something that a christian would do, I used to feel that servetus did not deserve to die because I think heresy is not a crime punishable by death. But after I listen to heretical teaching of a pastor in my city then I realized the severity of what the heretical teaching caused , it cannot be tolerable , especially if the error is on one of cardinal doctrine, ie doctrine of trinity. So now I understand why Calvin want to silence servetus and his heretical teaching by condemning him to death , it is because calvin regards heretical teaching especially on the doctrine of trinity as a great calamity that will threaten the christians , and therefore the source of that heretical teaching have to be destroyed as soon as possible. Christian are taught to love , but it does not mean christian cannot hate. If you love good, you must have evil. If you love sound doctrine, you have to hate heretical teaching. Of course nowadays we cannot harm those who taught heretical teaching like jehovah witnesses and mormon, but back then in geneva when calvin lived , heretics can be punished to death.

Calvin was heavily influenced by Augustine from the 4th century. Both men were also shaped by Roman and Latin philosophy and their culture. Both were intellectuals, and both were ardently opposed by very sincere believers. Calvin did not bring unity and still doesn’t. God elected grace and sent Jesus by grace. The power of salvation is in Him alone. There’s no power in grace. God elected to reveal Himself through Israel, and elected to show grace by sending Christ so that through Him the world might be saved. But the power of salvation rests solely on Him, and the gospel is the power of God unto salvation, because it reveals Christ to the unbeliever. Regeneration comes by faith, not before it. Jacob was chosen as the head of Israel, the covenant people of God whom God would reveal Himself to all mankind. So that the election of grace (sending Christ, the Seed) would stand. Not because Jacob was more worthy, but so that God may have mercy. But He will have mercy on those who believe and agree with Father that Jesus is Him! John Calvin is my brother in the Lord but he is just a man and not the Lord. He was mistaken about Romans 9. Otherwise Paul contradicts himself within the letter. 1:18+ makes it clear that all are without excuse, not because they never knew God or could never recognize God, but rather they knew God, but chose not to retain the knowledge of Him in their minds. It was for this reason that God turned them over to a depraved mind. And chapter 9 makes it clear that when God judges, He will be blameless when He does. God will not be judging His own choices in the final judgment. Jesus has come into the world. The bright lights are on. All are without excuse. And God desires that all men repent and come to knowledge of the truth. Read your bible or check out my book What Can A Corpse Do? on Amazon.

The following quotes come from eminent Calvinist apologists that show the connection that Calvinism has with Roman Catholicism. If you were to do your own research, the best you could do is go to history books, interview scholars and "theologians" in Calvinist and Roman Catholic circles, public libraries, journals, etc, but there is no way you can take a time machine to go back in time to verify your research.
    1) Richard Muller - "John Calvin was part of a long line of thinkers who based their doctrine of predestination on the Augustinian interpretation of St. Paul." In his book, "Christ and the decree" 1988 page 22.
    2) Alvin Baker - "There is hardly a doctrine of Calvin that does not bear the marks of Augustine's influence." In his book, "Berkouwer's Doctrine of Election: Balance or Imbalance" pg 25. 1981,
    3) Gregg C. Singer - "The main features of Calvin's theology are found in the writings of St. Augustine to such an extent that many theologians regard Calvinism as a more full developed form of Augustinianism." In his book, "John Calvin: His roots and fruits" , 1989, pg. viii
    4) B.B. Warfield - "The system of doctrine taught by Calvin is just the Augustinianism common to the whole body of the Reformers." In his book, "Calvin and Augustine", page 22, 1956.
    5) Loraine Boettner - "Calvin and Augustine easily rank as the two outstanding systematic expounders of the Christian system since Saint Paul". In his book, "The Reformed Doctrine of Predestination" page 405, 1932.
    6) John Calvin himself - "Augustine is so wholly with me, that if I wished to write a confession of my faith, I could do so with all fullness and satisfaction to myself out of his writings" In the book, "Calvin's Calvinism:"A treatise on the eternal predestination of God" written by John Calvin in 1552, Translated by Henry Cole, page 38, 1987.
    7) B.B, Warfield - "Augustine is in a true sense the founder of Roman Catholicism" In his book, "Calvin and Augustine" page 313, 1956,
It was Augustine who invented his own twisted interpretation of "PREDESTINATION/UNCONDITIONAL ELECTION" in his book, "City of God". Augustine states,"That owing to one man all pass into condemnation who are born of Adam unless they are born again in Christ, even as He has appointed them to be regenerated, before they die in the body, whom He predestinated to everlasting life, as the most merciful bestower of grace; whilst to those whom He has predestinated to eternal death, He is also the most righteous awarder of punishment." - "The City of God" On the Soul and its Origin - 4.16
Again, it was Augustine who invented "IRRESISTIBLE GRACE" in his book, "The City of God" - "On the predestination of the saints" -7, 8, 16.
Augustine errantly believed that the will of God became the cause of all things - In his book, "City of God" - under "Enchiridion" - 95, 96, 100, 101.
Augustine errantly believed "that no man is saved unless God wills it." In his book, "City of God" - under Enchiridion - 103.
It was Augustine who invented what is now known today as the 5th point of Calvinism which is "PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS":
Augustine states, "We, then, call men elected, and Christ's disciple's, and God's children, because they are to be so called whom, being regenerated, we see to live piously; but they are then truly what they are called IF they shall abide in that on account of which they are so called." In "City of God" - "On Rebuke and Grace" - 22.
Augustine states, "It is, indeed, to be wondered at, and greatly to be wondered at, that to some of His own children--whom He has regenerated in Christ--to whom He has given FAITH, hope, love, God does not give PERSEVERANCE also." - In his book, "City of God" - "On Rebuke and Grace" - 18.
Augustine states, "But they who fall and perish have never been in the number of the predestinated." - In his book, "City of God" - "On Rebuke and Grace" - 36.
Augustine errantly believed that salvation can be lost and he taught that only those who are regenerated by God and PERSEVERE, or in those that have lost their salvation that only after they "persevere" that
the grace of regeneration is restored, are finally saved. - In his book, "The History of Christian Doctrines" - Louis Berkof - page 136, 1937.
Now, does that not sound like what Calvinism currently teaches?
Augustine's version of "predestination", "irresistible grace", and "perseverance of the saints" sounds identical to what MacArthur, Piper, and what Sproul teaches which are 3 of the biggest names in Calvinism/Lordship Salvation today. Are they not? Is that not what Calvinism teaches? Calvin's idol was definitely Augustine.
