Prince was always a provocateur...serving up looks we'd never seen before (especially on a man!) and sounds like we'd never heard. Kiss, I think, dialed that all the way up in the most amazingly perfect way.
The Dynasty line, along with "act your age not your shoe size" entered the vernacular as the ultimate one liner put downs.

Ahhh!!! No matter what kind of music I was into growing up, Prince was always The Man. I didn't even bother learning how to dance until I heard "Baby I'm A Star." It was the first time I can remember hearing joy expressed as a song. But for me it was a very specific joy - the joy of not giving a F*ck. Artists can really change you with their music. And yes, Miss Wendy Melvoin was really playing guitar. Prince had not one but TWO women in his band (including Lisa Coleman) because he was that f-ing cool. Thanks for bringing back some good memories for me!

I just hope people really take into account, that even when Prince was "provocative" or sexually free, he was never demeaning women, listen to the lyrics of all his sexually charged songs. The women in his music, are always in control or he always has subliminal kind messages. Like "you don't have to be rich, to be my girl" or "you don't have to be beautiful to turn me out" to day in my generation, today artists sing, "but i don't get with broke b**hes" Prince' sexuality was so unique, he was never toxic with his words or messaging in love songs. At the same time he wasn't afraid of his masculinity either. So important to differentiate his sexuality from artists like Madonna, or some artists today

This song is so damn tight it’s about ready to explode! 💥🎸That funky riff and his agile falsetto winding us up to a frenzy. Prince was a musical genius (or IS a genius, as we can still experience so much of him through his work). I once heard this song first thing in the morning on the radio as I was just waking up and had the thought that the music is so meticulous and tight that it turns the silence between the notes into its own rhythm. Just a crazily well formed song. And we LOVED your reaction to the Dynasty line. And you’d already said it was your fav Prince song so far… The Dynasty moment must’ve pushed it way over the edge🏆
Here’s a story you might enjoy as a window into the early 80s…
My earliest memory of Prince was when I entered a mail in competition from a magazine to win one of the albums that was big in the charts. I was only a little kid but I already loved music, very influenced by my musician father’s adoration of the art form. The magazine promo offered a choice between 3 albums… Michael Jackson - Thriller, Culture Club - Kissing To Be Clever and Prince - Purple Rain. I went to my room and thought hard about my choice. I’d heard and seen all the artists on radio and TV, and they all had a different impact on my baby mind. I liked Culture Club’s music but I was sadly already aware that liking Boy George would mark me for homophobic ridicule. I was kinda scared of Prince because he was so overtly sexual. People called him gay out of ignorance but it never stuck because he was just so assertively sexy and obviously almost frighteningly talented as a singer and composer. I loved MJ already and he was a much safer choice for a kid to make (perhaps ironically), so when I won one of the giveaway copies of Thriller it became the first album I ever owned! That began my formative obsession with Michael Jackson, but I never forgot the more grownup mysterious power of Prince. This level of talent is such a gift to the world.

His cousin and former bandmate, Andre Cymone, played/did production for/dated Jody Watley. Check her deep cuts "Some Kind Of Lover" and "Still A Thrill" if you haven't already. He had just made/was making "Under The Cherry Moon" with this look. But Prince is playing all instruments, doing all vocals here. The band members were for touring and some songs on particular albums. Not this song though.

I was looking for this kind of response.. Prince lived with Andre Cymone when he was younger. They were in a band since high school, Grand Central and Andre started playing bass with Prince leaving after the Dirty Mind album. You can see Andre with Prince in the Dirty Mind video. People say they were pretty similar in some of their music. Andre actually married (and divorced) and has a son with Jody Watley. So you might have just picked up on something that many of us didn't know!
