There’s something charming about the first game’s simplicity. Funny enough I actually went to the ice cave and got the airship before even fighting the firefiend lol. I had to run from everything in there though I was able to upgrade my class before going to the volcano.

I had just played and finished the FFI pixel remaster earlier this year and surprisingly enjoyed it alot more than I thought that I was going to so this filled some of my FFI content craving. That white mage outfit is really cute. I'm a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series and it started when I was a child with this game. Honestly it started with Dragon Warrior, than amplified when I discovered this game. To this day I love the era of Final Fantasy turn based games.

I haven't played the remaster, but I played the original FF1 for the first time a few years back and was surprised at how much fun I had. Unpopular opinion, but I actually liked the mechanic where an attack aimed at a target who dies isn't automatically shifted to a target that's still alive, it just misses. It really made me pay attention and be strategic during battles, which I found more engaging than later entries in the series.

While I don't fully agree, streaming it with only two brain cells really makes you appreciate fail safes, when I'm playing on my own time I do have a tendency to play as though that is still the case because it is 100% more engaging.

What I like about this game (specially the gba version) is that it does have all the final fantasy vibes but with a very simplistic design. This makes it a very cozy wind down at the end of the day kinda game.

Love the video,. A lot of these things that are sort of cryptic and hard to figure out. If you’re only playing the game, we’re not so hard to figure out when it released. The original game on the NES came with not only maps of all the dungeons, but also came with an almost 90 page manual that explained the story step-by-step, and where you’re supposed to be going. I could see the scheme being a lot more confusing without those items. Glad you played in late to the game though

I’ve always been impressed at how many things the series nailed in its first entry. I expected it to be crude and half-baked, but it turns out that it actually perfected the general formula right out of the gate and set a standard that has remained all the way to XVI. It’s not the most intricate game, but still I found it a joy to play and I’m glad to see that you seem to agree.

Final Fantasy 1 is a great way to introduce D&D, and vice-versa.
Broad tropes, easily discovered battle roles, things going off the deep end when the lore actually gets explained, magic items that make the game far too easy.
I say all this with love

  • @LordHorst

Sometimes the algorithm unearthes good things. This was a nicely done video. Still a little rough around the edges (second camera quite out of focus in the beginning, sometimes there are noticeable "clicks/jumps" in the sound during camera angle changes, mouse pointer visible during gameplay, to only name a few "rough edges"), but overall very decent video. Good script, very clear enunciation (English isn't my first language, so I sometimes have a hard time understanding native speakers. Just assuming you're a native speaker here :O) and of course dressing up as a white mage.

First of all, LOVE the cosplay / Dagger realness! Second, great video, all of your points are well supported and (irrelevant yes, but still) i agree with you!
FF1 is very D&D coded, not only in setup but in many of the mechanics including the terrible magic system with no MP and having to purchase spells. Indeed it's so inspired by D&D that some monsters had to be redesigned to avoid seeming like a ripoff. That contributed to your point that 1 doesn't really feel like its own thing yet. Except for the music and sound design, which are fanfreakingtastic! Besides the instantly iconic themes and fanfare, many music tropes and sound effects debut here. I'd even argue that this score is superior to many of its sequels!

    Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🍀
I was thinking of a lot of things to say and then I read through the comments, and eh... well, pretty much everything I had on my mind had been said. Lovely video, fun editing and lots of humour, cute white mage outfit, even someone commenting they like the engagement of battle mechanics not auto targeting the next enemy in line. I guess there's not much left to say for me, so happy Halloween! :D
Oh, that pronunciation of cacktour? Wth? How? But... if that's how it's pronounced, then... those horse people... d'eh... taurus... bentaur... CENTAURS! That's it! Centaur. Is that then also pronounced centeaur? 🤣
Though through rough thought... I guess in English anything is possible 🤣Let's rename all mythical beings and FF enemies to Welsh, that'll fix everything! :p You could make it a guess the Pokémon kind of thing on your stream :p
Guess this FF enemy! "Nidmarw Dyntarw" - Not-dead Man-bull, or Minotaur Zombie.
Annnnd is that a maynotour? Mihnnotar? Miñotohr? Menoteaur? I asked duckduckgo and it says that Americans pronounce it: Minnetohr, and the British say: Minnoteaur.
So now that we have the pronunciation out of the way of the kektour, senteuar, and the minnetor, isn't the taur-part of those words referring to a taurus? Greek/Latin for bull?
    Wikipedia:
    Noun
taurus m (genitive taurī); second declension
    1 a bull, steer
2 the constellation Taurus the bull
3 an instrument of torture, in the shape of a bull
4 a small bird that sounds like the lowing of oxen, possibly the bittern
    5 a kind of beetle
    6 (anatomy) the perineum
ohhhkay... The more you learn. I think I'm done learning for a bit 🤣I am kind of curious though, how does one shape a torture device like a bull and how does it work? 🤣
    **one minute later**
    Oh! 🤣 Wow! 🤣 Here, take a look: arkeonews.net/the-worst-torture-device-in-history-brazen-bull/
The historian Diodorus Siculus wrote that Perilaus said:
“O Phalaris, if you want to punish a man, close him between the bull and light a fire under him, his moans will be thought of the bull’s bellowing, and his cries of pain will give you pleasure as he passes through the pipes in his nostrils. ”
    Like I said: Wow! 🤣🤣🤣
But it's still a mystery why Cactaur and Centaur end with -taur. And it's pronounced: tarwo by the way, in Welsh at least 🤣

I'd say the reason the character customisation introduced here scales back over the years in each game is cause the characters in FF1 are self inserts or such, characters with no actual personality or story to them and jsut act as vectors for the player, while future games gradually emphasised the actual characters of the playable heroes more over time.

This was a really fun video. Might I suggest, if you haven't checked it out yet, a fan made retelling of the Final Fantasy called Final Fantasy: Renaissance? It is a lovingly crafted remake of the original game with a few major updates, including additional classes that wouldn't appear until later games. It is really one of the best ways to play the first game in this epic series today.

  • @pastformal8354
    @pastformal8354 3 дня назад +2

Entertaining video I subbed. I had no idea you had so little subscribers until I got halfway through the video and checked. The reason party comp in this game is weird and speedrunners run red mages is because of how broken the NES version is. I'm assuming the pixel remaster fixes bugs like the dawn of souls GBA port does so I'm not sure if you were referring to pixel remaster runners or NES runners.
In the NES version intelligence is bugged and has no effect on spellcasting, in addition to that most of the spells that are unique to black or white mages either aren't very good or are also bugged and don't work. Some spells actually have the opposite of their intended effect, Lock2 increases enemy evasion for example. So because red mages have more HP, better strength, and can use swords they are optimal.

Hey, nice video! Thanks RUclips algorithm. I liked the editing and various cuts (bummer that some of the asides were out of focus). Your timely outfit change was noticed and appreciated :)
As a fellow editor, some general takeaways if they're at all helpful: I might consider cutting to more footage for future ones to break up the pacing, and to make individual takes easier on yourself? A picture-in-picture view where you've got footage/stills in the corner of the screen is also a pleasant extra tool to have in one's pocket for mixing things up visually. Finally, if possible to do without fear of a copyright strike, I've always found this type of video benefits from having some low-volume music peppered throughout (whether it's from the game, or something inoffensive and royalty-free).
Anyhoo, look forward to checking out the next video, and your dorky face in general! :D

Once you stop at a certain level, for example if you stop at level 15 or even 20 your monk will hit like a tank. Its in all the ff 1 games even the NES version. Idk if people know this put its so worth exploring and really fun. Say if you dont have a Warrior class the Monk class got you curved. You can make the Monk stronger than the Warrior. For example the tombstone that says "Here lies Link" in the PM says "Here lies Erdrick" in the original, as Erdrick was the legendary hero of Enix's Dragon Quest, and Square was making Final Fantasy to compete with them. Now of course its SquareEnix so didnt make sense to make fun of their own game, so they went after Nintendo instead.

Shit tons of bugs/glitches, difficulty imbalances, and game was much harder. like grinding forever to farm enough money to buy better equipment, level up super slow unless you knew best leveling spots. blitzed through this remake in under 12 hours and still grinded tho.

    • @Multienderguy37
      @Multienderguy37 13 часов назад +1

@@biggle_manThe sky dungeon is completely changed. In the remake it is a generic fantasy castle whereas in the original it is a sci fi space station with Star Trek like aesthetics. Apart from that, spells in the original are extremely jank, some don’t work while others have the opposite of the intended effect. Due to different items and balancing it is also probably a bit more difficult, but with minor grinding this is alleviated as enemy patterns are quite simple. Also, int doesn’t work, so spells fall off hard in the late game, and the defense stat for black belts are broken.

The original FF is easily S tier. It's the only title where dudes came together to conquer bad because it was the right thing to do. Every other title, the team had motives, a prince protecting his kingdom, somebody feeling slighted and had a wrong to right, protecting their sibling, vindication for a loved one etc... no, the warriors of light did it, with no praise in the end, no clout or street cred, they did it because it was the right thing to do.

Loved your video! I want to give hints for playing through 2 so badly… Instead, all I’ll suggest is “be *intentionally* efficient”. 2 is a beautiful, *different* game from 1, and I’m on my fourth playthrough in a row. Take care!

If this is the thing everyone says to do in FF2, that strat is *poison.*
How does the quote go? "Optimize the fun out of the game?"
It's tedious, unnecessary, and if done right it makes the rest of the game just as repetitive and dull. Literally doing a boring thing to make the game more boring.
If you're trying to suggest she not do the thing, awesome! Thanks for spreading the word!

I always hated 2. Played it emulated with an English translation patch back in the 90s, then again when they made the Game Boy Advance remake, could never find any enjoyment in it.

That got a chuckle out of me. And a sub! I think you did a great job balancing jokes and jabs with honest critique. Also good balance on the amount of camera shifts with your asides. If you hadn't informed us you were an editor, I would have said you'd make a good one! In the proverbial sea of Opinions on FF1, yours keeps it fresh.
Great video overall, and looking forward to more of your thoughts on the rest of the series. (Also cute cloak!!). Good luck!

"AcHtUaLy," the forefather of the franchise is the first Wizardry game. The jobs and systems are very similar. What Final Fantasy did was add a world and much more beautiful audiovisuals to it (especially for an NES game). Don’t worry if you didn’t know that-most people think Final Fantasy was based on Dungeons & Dragons (which is only half true). If you don’t want to play Wizardry, just read its manual. You’ll feel "strangely" familiar. If you want to play, I suggest SNES version with translation path. The new remake is not bad, but I prefer sprites over 3d.

The best one is Final Fantasy Ultra Champion Edition. You can play as a Ninja right out of the gate, and the Pirates have their own dungeon. ROM hacks FTW!
Also, my conspiracy theory is that 1 and 4 take place on Krynn and are straight up DragonLance D&D games. I'd love to see a "demake" of Final Fantasy using the Gold Box engine.

There's no point in discussing what the best Final Fantasy title is. That one is obvious. But hey folks, let's talk about what the second best FF title could be... is it 9, 8 or 7? Is it 12, 10 or 4? Or perhaps one of the recently released ones? What's your pick for the 2nd best Final Fantasy game?!

I haven't spent nearly as much time with the Pixel Remaster as I have with the original, so this observation may be moot.
The thing people miss when looking back at FF1 with a more complete familiarity with JRPGs is how it's designed to wear your party down. True to its roots of stealing from DnD (80's DnD, naturally) FF1 is a resource-management dungeon-crawler.
The hard limit of 99 healing potions, the cost of inn stays early-game, the moneysink of buying spells, all encourage the player to not take bad fights. "These two spiders will earn me $30, one Pure potion costs $75. Can I take them out before their poison procs, or do I run?"
Even late-game it's common to run from drawn-out fights to save resources for encounters that are unrunnable. Or even sandbag against a simple enemy with the White shirt and the Heal staff/helms rather than quaff 20 potions. (1/5th of your total supply!)
None of the other Final Fantasys are like this, so I try to draw attention to it. It looks like a mistake if you view FF1 as one JRPG of many, but it didn't have a genre to get wrong.

Really interesting point that we'll probably get more into when talking about 2, that and the ability to exchange party suffering for player suffering if you're willing to put in that grind time. I do feel some of the quality of life changes made through out the game's life span have taken some of the bite out of this feeling. Having played the beginning of some of the harder ttrpg dungeon crawlers (shockingly our campaigns fell apart before reaching the finish line) that really does sum up the feeling of weariness and balance you have to commit to at certain points in the game, I'm sure we'll circle back to a discussion on ttrpgs at some point soon as well!

It's a shame that there is no option to enable the bonus dungeons from the PSP remake in the pixel remaster as these really spice things up. The second FF also has some bonus content not found in the pixel remaster and is also highly recommended.

    Pretty good balance of metrics
I had to think why use of tropes would be a metric and then i realized that sometime around final fantasy 6 maybe sooner someone in the marketing team decided to make mandatory tropes to the final fantasy IP. Some games use this better than others thus its actually a metric.
I look forward to seeing how you carry forward on your journey.
Also feel free to skip 11 and 14 an MMO cant be reviewed as long as it continues to expand imo and 11 is basically impossible to play unless you have a special variant of hardware to attach to a magical black or blue box pending on your location on this world of ours. 14 is constantly growing and to play through every class option sounds tiring honestly.
I look forward to more of your takes as i was concerned no one liked 2d turn based non phone games anymore.
