I only recently realized this: one thing that sets “Trick r Treat” apart from most horror films is how colorful it actually is. Most horror movies go for a dark or washed-out palette, but this one is filled with colors in the form of orange Jack-o-lanterns, bright Halloween lights, costumes, and multi-colored candy. It really is a treat (pun intended) for the eyes.
At first I thought Rhonda leaving the kids behind was cold, but then I remembered them saying the lift only takes 3 people. One of them would have to be left behind and you just KNOW they would throw her to the wolves.
That and let's not forget that they just played a prank on her. It's known that Rhonda actually has autism, and as someone with high functioning autism, I wouldn't trust you as far as I could throw you after that. Not one incident right after another. I'd be very aware that it could again be a cruel prank and I'd be made to look stupid and upset. So, bye, I'm leaving. You can stay down there getting "attacked" all I care.
People were saying at that scene that she was possesses by Sam because on the lift she waves the exact way that he does through the movie to people and then she sees him on top of the cliff after coming back up
Believe it or not, but I met Samantha Todd who played her at a horror convention this year. She's anything but cold and heartless in real life. She's got a very upbeat and bubbly personality. She also enjoys signing autographs and interacting with anyone who recognizes her.
What I love about Sam is just how different he is. He's not some random monster that'll kill you for no reason, but he's also not some secret hero that punishes evil. He's just there to terrorize people that aren't in the Halloween spirit.
He's essentially a god figure since he's the embodiment of the holiday and, like any good god, if you respect him and are devout enough, you'll be in his favor. But if you cross him...
He for sure is no hero. He lets a guy get away with murder just because he upholded the tradition of giving him candy on Halloween night. Though that's why I love Sam. He really just doesn't care UNLESS you disrespect Halloween and its traditions.
DEFINITELY love watching this movie near Halloween it's become almost like a tradition. Few yeas back I made a standing Sam doll to creep out the neighbors. Last year and this year mom has stuffed a child sized Sam costume to display outside. there is a mini Sam I made that I made last year the stits in a little rocking chair In my apartment he gets dressed for all the holidays.
I love how it represents every age group and how they celebrate. Kids viewing it seriously, recounting dark urban legends, teens thinking they're too cool for this and doing coming of age shit, the young couple who want to go all out with decorations, a dad having, uh, wholesome fun carving with his kid, wine mom getting drunk and hoping to score at her party, and the old guy who hates all this and *really wants these kids off of his lawn.*
It's also the only Halloween movie I know of where at one point you can see a person's breath fog, showing that it's cold out. Those of us who have had to plan costumes around snow suits know.
Another Fun Fact: Most of the Jack O' Lanterns were made out of either foam or ceramic. An on-set joke was that no pumpkins were harmed during the making of this movie.
Fun fact, Doug walker attempted to quit this character several years ago to start a sketch show. It was such a failure and was worse than every movie/show that he has ever reviewed. He does this character now only for the money.
The reason Sam left was because he was attacking Mr. Kreeg for not giving kids candy (a tradition of Halloween). When he stabbed the chocolate bar that was on Kreeg, he technically did get it FROM him so the tradition he was attacking him for was committed. Also why Mr Kreeg gives out candy now, not because he's a changed man but so that crazy little bastard doesn't come back.
For the ending, I think Sam had two purposes for Leaving the old man alive. 1) he was looking for candy, like any other trick or treat-er. And 2) as a Halloween spirit, he probably knew the bus kids were coming to get their revenge. Still a fantastic review and I love this movie so much
I loved the subtle hints that the girls are actually werewolves, like the whole "We'll huff and puff and blow your house down" joke, their saying that there's plenty of 'fresh meat' in town, and one girl mentioning she ate 'bad Mexican'. Plus, the idea of Little Red Riding Hood being the wolf is fucking badass.
One thing you also might notice is that teacher from the second storyline, Mrs. Henderson, is seen later with the werewolves girls devouring the gym coach in the hot dog costume.
Yes, all the talk when they're changing in the costume shop is major foreshadowing. You mentioned the "I ate some bad Mexican" line, but there's also this. "We went as sailors and hooked up with sailors." "Yeah and your sailor was a girl!" "So what? She had a nice ass! It all tastes the same to me!"
This is my favorite Halloween movie. Micheal Doughtery set out to make a film that celebrated Halloween and create a new mascot for the season like Spring has the Easter bunny and Christmas has Santa. He absolutely succeeded. When people think of Halloween now, Sam and Micheal Myers immediately come to mind.
@@ryouma1717 that’s also a good one. I’m a big fan of the Celtic Fairy equivalent: The Dullahan. Does have their head cut off, but they either keep it as a lantern, or their face is grafted onto a shield. If it’s glowing gaze catches you and/or it catches you and speaks your name, you die. It also acts as a sort of grim reaper, in that it hunts you down to the ends of the earth if it marks you as a target. And if you happen to catch one riding, it douses you in a bucket of blood
Another nice touch in the movie: In the festival, before the girl is murdered she runs into the couple from the begining of the film and asks for their help but the woman was so annoyed by then, she dismisses the victim off so she and her husband could get home and take down the decorations.
Am more of a fan to the sequel, an American Werewolf in Paris (although I guess, because some people think of it as a fever dream, then an actual movie)
Sammy is literally Samhain. I hope in the sequel, or sequels Sammy wears a different costume each time. Visiting a different town each Halloween making sure the traditions are followed and punishing the ones who don't.
I absolutely adore Sam as the spirit of Halloween enforcing it's rules and traditions. Every time I see new merch released I get it, and it tells so much how iconic Sam is that whenever there is any sort of Trick R Treat merch it's him, any time you see an orange lollipop with a bite or that little flour-sack mask it just has you thinking back to this little pumpkin terror. I'd like to think that Sam has become a horror icon alongside legends like Freddy and Ghost Face.
A brilliant choice was to make the past/dead trick or treaters come from the 70’s. Costumes of the past have this unnerving creep factor, they were charming at the time but now the old photos are chilling. The bus ride alone looks so disturbing, but if they swapped out with modern clean costumes, it wouldn’t be nearly as chilling
My personal opinion for why Sam didn't kill the bus driver was cause he wasn't his to kill and knew that the kids were on their way, so instead let him live just long enough to spread the holiday cheer before his passing at their hands.
9:36 Fun fact: The angel trick-or-treater is also the voice actress of Princess Cadence from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Funnily enough, this is the 2nd time she was in a Halloween special as she was Hannah in Scary Godmother, which was already reviewed for Nostalgiaween before. XD
For kids Halloween is about the candy and the scary stories. For young people it's about sex. For adults it's about the decorations. And for old people, they're grumpy about Halloween.
Trick R Treat is a perfect love letter to the season of Halloween!! Watching this every year has always been my tradition! Thank you for covering this, Doug!
You know, I'd love to see a Nostalgiaween that's related to Tim Burton. And I'd like to see you talk about the Sweeney Todd adaptation. For me, it wasn't terrible but Sweeney Todd is my favorite musical and this adaptation felt like a steak that is bland and unseasoned. Visually appealing but not having the soul of it. I saw the revival in New York starring Josh Groban and let me tell you it was amazing. By the way, William H. Macy was sitting behind me so I got his autograph. And a double autograph from Gaten Matarazzo as well.
Fun fact: The little kid peeping on the were-girls is actually the kid in the Sam Costume. They wanted people to see his real face, so they gave him a cameo
I'm glad with how they represented Rhonda with having autism by being very creative and artistic with the pumpkins and her costume. That's something a lot of people overlook when they perceive someone with having some form of autism such as Asperger's, which is what I have. I also don't blame Rhonda for leaving the others behind after they pulled that mean prank on her. Once you've pissed off an autistic person, they show no mercy!
Its more they just dont trust you anymore. I have autism and if I got pranked like that Id think its just another wave of cruel pranks. Its not so much vengeance its more our own logic saying “Oh no, I fell for it once and Im never falling for it again” leaving them behind could of just been her fed up with them trying to prank her.
also I like to think the bus kids attacked the others because they pulled a mean prank on her because she was diferent like them! Not only that but the prank andedup hurting her so the drowned kids were avenging a fellow weird kid who was hurt for being different.
I was just thinking, it's a pretty common thing in horror stories for a disabled character to be abused, then get bloody revenge. For some reason, I can only think of Pumpkinhead 2 right now, and again in this very movie with the school bus kids, but, uh ... I bet there are more. TBH, I missed completely that Rhonda has autism on the first view, and only noticed because I was looking for some kind of condition she might have that would explain why her bullies would use the r-slur about her between themselves in the deleted scenes. 🙄 I was on her side ultimately, but I did also think, "Yeah, but I bet most autistic kids don't leave people to die ... sure, I'm kinda fine with Macy being left down there, but I bet her little brother and Schrader just got threatened into it, Macy's nuts."
I love the scene when Ronda comes up From the elevator and you hear the kids screaming in the background and she runs into Sam and they just stand there looking at each other and then go their separate ways. It's like he was saying "well played boss"
In a movie with werewolves and killer trick or treaters, the most unrealistic thing about this film is a store still having costumes on Halloween night. I went 2 days before Halloween and the entire store was cleaned out
Fun fact: in the opening scene, there’s a couple seconds where you can actually see the zombie kids leaving old man Kreeg’s house after they finished their “work” with him! This is way before they’re even officially introduced! I love all the little details I keep finding in this movie even after so many years.
2:21 I have never seen this better explained. I remember watching this film when I was a kid, one Halloween; I happened to catch it on TV. I didn’t know what it was called, barely even understood what was going on, yet somehow every visual detail of the half I watched stuck with me. I didn’t even rewatch it until literal years later, but the memories of it were as vivid as always before I did.

It's so weird, this year every single Nostalgiaween movie is something that I could have sworn that he had covered already. I'm honestly loving this oh, it's like a fun little surprise every week
This really did bring back the feel of what Halloween is when it comes to just spooks and scares. We get so little of that now and even before the pandemic it felt like Halloween was just a go have a party and stay in when it was about going out, seeing scary spooky houses, and having a fun time all around. This is a great movie and I heard they were going to make a second one, if thats true, can't wait to see whats next. Also if you did like this one you may likes "Tales of Halloween". Similar movie and to me just as good.
Before Sam (Samhain) appeared in this anthology movie, he appeared in a short animated film called “Trick ‘r’ Treat: Seasons Greetings”, also made by director Michael Doughtery.
Added bonus: You can see a brief (very brief) bit of “Seasons Greetings” in the TrT anthology movie! That spooky animated jack-o-lantern on the TV next to the scene from Scooby Doo On Zombie Island Mr. Kreeg is watching is from the original short animation!
A Title Fact: The film had many title changes before filming began. Originally titled Season's Greetings (also the name of the short film), it was changed because it sounded too much like a Christmas film. Then it was called Halloween Terrors, Jack O' Lantern Tales, October the 31st, and Trick or Treat. The final title was kept but since there was already a movie of the same name out, they changed the spelling to Trick 'r Treat.
Rewatched this recently. I think the reason Sammy killed her wasn't just the decorations, but because (IIRC) she actually says "I hate Halloween" at one point, and thus he went "So you have chosen death."
Fun fact!: the pervy kid spying on the werewolf girls in the costume shop is the same child actor who plays Sam. They just wanted the kid to make a little cameo and show him somewhere without the makeup or costume on, so why not there?
I don't know why but Doug's jacket reminded of a vague memory of a pumpkin shaped treat. I don't know if it was a cookie or a cake but I know it exists somewhere out there.
One Last Fact: In one scene will Brian Cox is flipping channels on his tv Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island is shown also C. Ernst Harth has a cameo as Laurie's blind date, the 'Giant Baby'. In Thir13en Ghosts (2001), he played the ghost called 'The Great Child', also a giant baby. Both films are Warner Bros. releases.
I don’t know about a killer trick or treater, but I can think of two examples of trick or treaters as monsters off the top of my head: “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (Lock, Shock, and Barrel), and “EarthBound” (one of the monsters is a kid wearing a jack o’lantern on his head and is simply called Trick or Treat Kid).
This movie is what i consider to be a timeless epitome of Halloween. From the goofy spooks, to the absolute terroe and dread. Real monsters, and men in makeup. Silly and sadistic children. Specters and sheet ghosts. Everythinf about this movie IS Halloween The iconic character of sam is the perfect mascot for Halloween as well; A childish monster who's the spirit of Halloween itself. His costume is a mixture of goofy, cute, unsettling and creepy and wrapped in a nice orange and black bow. He's a psychopathic slasher, a spirit of morality like a folktale creature, and a fun loving little guy. I love everything about this movie.
I just made my wife watch this with me, she actually loved it and she hates horror. This is an annual movie for me. It’s just dripping with Halloween atmosphere and imagery and I love it
Weirdly wholesome: Apparently, the disabled kids on the bus were played by actual kids with disabilities and injuries, and they reportedly had a great time while shooting the film.
Easily my favorite horror anthology movie. I love the way all the different stories take place in the same town on the same night and are all interconnected with each other. I wish more anthology movies would try that.
Finally, you're taking this movie on! Can't wait to see what you have to say about it. Say, do you have any Halloween Fanscription's planned? And you absolutely need to review the 2010 Wolfman remake!
I think its one of the most unique werewolf transformations ever put onscreen. You think of Werewolf transformation scenes like American werewolf in London or Lon Chaney Jr as The Wolfman where it's practical, but to think the wolf itself lies under the flesh and the skin has to be peeled and replaced for the inner wolf to be loose? Its done in a way where it feels painful to watch. The puppet work looks fantastic as well.
Sam doesn't just love Halloween, he IS Halloween. Sam is short for Samhain. He's the living embodiment of Halloween. That's why he's omnipresent in the movie.
I truly love this movie. As a lover of all horror I can definitively say that it excellently captures the sort of twisted joy that comes from Halloween. I always watch it at some point during October, I find it so much fun.
A Neat Fact: Mr. Kreeg says "you've got to be fucking kidding me" when he sees part of the supernatural killer (its hand) operating independently from his body... This is a nod to a similar scene in John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) of which Michael Dougherty is a fan.
The First Halloween movie was about Halloween. Children trick or treating, horror movie marathon, a creepy old house, even a monster in a William Shatner mask. I also liked the third Halloween film was about Halloween. I always felt that Trick R Treat was the kind of film John Carpenter would have made, if he had been allowed to continue making the Halloween films about Halloween, instead of the series becoming entirely about Michael Meyers.
You know, my theory i think sam left him alive because he KNEW the zombie kids were gonna get him, and it was good revenge not only for sam but for the kids
The fact that Samhain is pronounced as sown (or Saa-wn in the US) makes it so funny that the character is called Sam. So clear they thought it was Sam-Hayn!
One of my favorite scenes only makes sense when you rewatch it. If you listen to the sisters talking at the costume shop, their dialogue changes so much when you know they're werewolves. Also, dressing up as Red Riding Hood smacks of hazing.
Sam is named for Samhain, which is pronounced Sowin, or Soween. (Its the holiday Rhonda describes jist before saying I like your eye patch) Its Gaelic, but when the romans came over, they made an absolute mess of the letters, so almost nothing sounds like it's spelled.
That Gravity Falls monster is a loving homage to spirited away, A LOVING HOMAGE!. This movie is an excellent Halloween watch, anthology films are great for Halloween
Thing I love most about Trick R Treat is that it is a movie that is actually about Halloween. Although there is Halloween, it's just about a masked man going on a killing spree which can happen anytime of the year. Trick R Treat is actually about the holiday Halloween and its traditions and history and how people of different age groups celebrate it. Cannot wait to see more of Halloween's explored in Trick R Treat 2; Michael Dougherty said a sequel is in progress and is just waiting to get the green light to start.
Trick 'r Treat is a classic Halloween movie and definitely one of my favorites, also Nostalgia Critic was right Brett Kelly (Charlie) and Thurman Merman (Bad Santa) will be 30 years old on October 30th
My favorite thing about this movie is that if you look closely you see characters from the other segments in the background during each segment so a lot of the characters crossed paths. I also thought it was interesting that some people deserved their fates while others had the punishment totally be too harsh for the crime. I mean the kids who played the prank didn't deserve to die nor somebody who just snuffed out a Jack O Lantern early but OTOH the killer of the chubby kid (who apparently was grooming his kid to be a serial killer) gets eaten by a werewolf and the bus driver who killed the kids gets killed by the kids. Gave me mixed feelings but was impressed by the writing.
Next year for Nostalgia-Ween, you should do a review on Puppet Master (1989). It was made on a low budget of $400,000 and was intended for a theatrical release but went straight to video. It was deemed “just okay” upon first impression but stuck with people over time and has since gotten a massive following among horror fans.
I saw this movie on Netflix 12 years ago, and I fell in love with it, and now it's the one movie I ALWAYS put on every year on Halloween. I also love how the four stories have a different mood to them, like the killer next door had a dark comedy feel, the Rhonda story had a sort of tragic feel, the werewolves story was sexy and erotic, and the final one (my favorite) with Sam visiting old man Creeg was just straight up horror! This is the one movie that perfectly embodies Halloween.
Ironic that Charlie Brown gets called an asshole considering that A: He’s probably the nicest character in the entire franchise, and B: Lucy is the real asshole. Let’s be honest here.

I'm autistic and I don't start anything but if someone starts something I can't let it go
I was just thinking, it's a pretty common thing in horror stories for a disabled character to be abused, then get bloody revenge.
One of the best, if not the best, halloween movie out there. Thinking about it, I'm surprised this hasn't been covered sooner.
🎃
He mentioned it in a top 11 list awhile ago, but that's it.

@@JP2GiannaT I still loved when Count Jackula got revenge on NC for leaving Trick R' Treat as a runner up on Top 11 New Halloween Classics.
It’s not Halloween unless I watch this movie, it always gets me in the mood
The "most Halloween" movie ever made.
🎃 Happy Nostalgiaween everyone! 🎃

Dunno about you but i get @bebopjelli2 and @celeboria one after another in the comments with a bright orange profile pic over my Dark Mode browser, and with all these 🎃 emoji
Followed by Halloween 3
It's so weird, this year every single Nostalgiaween movie is something that I could have sworn that he had covered already. I'm honestly loving this oh, it's like a fun little surprise every week
He covered Trick’r Treat in the Top 11 New Halloween Classics video
Sam is probably my all-time favourite horror villains. There’s something fun about the trick-r-treater being the main threat
Never prank an autistic kid. (Believe me, I'm autistic)
That, Creepshow, and Tales From The Hood are my favorite anthology films
Sam is such a great Halloween mascot monster. He's the perfect mix of creepy and adorable.
He's just a little dude doing what he loves. I half suspected to see him eating the old man's candy siding in front of the old man's TV at some point.
They just wanted the kid to make a little cameo and show him somewhere without the makeup or costume on, so why not there?
fun fact, the little kid that was peeping on the girls was Sam's actor.
I absolutely adore Sam as a mascot of horror. An actual deity of the holiday who takes the form of a small child is so cool
Both films are Warner Bros. releases.
I still want Sam to randomly show up in a horror movie, just for a little nod to this cult classic
I guess
Thanks for making our Wednesday better with a classic Halloween movie review ❤🎃🖤

“Charlie Brown’s an asshole” still gets me every time
I don’t know about a killer trick or treater, but I can think of two examples of trick or treaters as monsters off the top of my head: “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (Lock, Shock, and Barrel), and “EarthBound” (one of the monsters is a kid wearing a jack o’lantern on his head and is simply called Trick or Treat Kid).
Sam is adorable and scary at the same time. THe way he stares at others is terrifying and how he kills them too but his mask is cute. I like him 🥰
I was sort of hoping to see tiny Sams sprout from his pumpkin seed guts that's my headcannon for seeing so many Sam figurines dolls now lol
This movie is what i consider to be a timeless epitome of Halloween. From the goofy spooks, to the absolute terroe and dread.
Real monsters, and men in makeup. Silly and sadistic children. Specters and sheet ghosts. Everythinf about this movie IS Halloween
The iconic character of sam is the perfect mascot for Halloween as well;
A childish monster who's the spirit of Halloween itself. His costume is a mixture of goofy, cute, unsettling and creepy and wrapped in a nice orange and black bow. He's a psychopathic slasher, a spirit of morality like a folktale creature, and a fun loving little guy.
I love everything about this movie.
I'm so happy to see this film get a proper review.
8:35 8:37 “I’m gay now. I’m straight now.” Best joke ever
A Super Fact: The opening credits includes artwork from various members of the team. There are also childhood photos from various cast and crew too.
fun anthology type film. i liked how it all came together.
This right here is one of favorite Halloween movies to watch every Halloween its like the perfect Halloween movie to watch
I'm a man with disabilities and I have fond memories of my parents sending me to my death on a bus headed for a cliff every Halloween.
This is my all time favorite Halloween movie. I’m so excited.
5:44 ALL the foreshadowing in the wordplay for this scene is frankly, gold.
I was hoping he would get to this movie. It's one of my favorite to watch around halloween 😊
The first scene. Who the hell takes down decorations the night of a holliday? Who has the energy?
I usually leave them up several days after
I usually wait 5 days until I take them down cause I'm still in the Halloween mood.
Wow, first Monster House, then Coraline, and now Trick 'R Treat. This is a great Nostalgia-ween so far
The werewolf transformation always stuck with me since I first saw it. I love the concept of peeling their skin off to reveal the wolf beneath!
Van hellsing was CGI but the peeling thing was really cool there too.
@@BrandontheBeldam2993so this is where that one comes from.
Altered Beast game on PS1 actually has really gruesome transformations.
Sam doesn't just love Halloween, he IS Halloween. Sam is short for Samhain. He's the living embodiment of Halloween. That's why he's omnipresent in the movie.
Did not see this until years after it was released, recommended by a friend, ever since it has been one of my favorite halloween/ horror film.
16:36 Honestly I see Van Hellsing werewolves as peak werewolf design.
That’s why it’ll always be my favorite adaptation.
I truly love this movie. As a lover of all horror I can definitively say that it excellently captures the sort of twisted joy that comes from Halloween. I always watch it at some point during October, I find it so much fun.
I love how you use the jingle of Silver Shamrock from Halloween 3 the Season of the Witch, my favorite Halloween movie, for your intro.
Lets just take a second to appreciate Doug's effort on the mid-show sponsors 😂 always makes me laugh
I freaking LOVE this movie and the animated short it was based on.
Yep, this is a Halloween must. I always watch this movie along with Night of the Demon 1988. And it takes place in my home state of Ohio.
You know, my theory i think sam left him alive because he KNEW the zombie kids were gonna get him, and it was good revenge not only for sam but for the kids
I rewatch this movie every fall season 😊
The fact that Samhain is pronounced as sown (or Saa-wn in the US) makes it so funny that the character is called Sam. So clear they thought it was Sam-Hayn!
This movie will always be a Halloween classic
Any Halloween movie will be a Halloween classic
@@chasehedges6775 Scream 6 is a Halloween movie, I wouldn't call it one
One of my favorite scenes only makes sense when you rewatch it. If you listen to the sisters talking at the costume shop, their dialogue changes so much when you know they're werewolves. Also, dressing up as Red Riding Hood smacks of hazing.
Love this movie. Got them nostalgia tingles.
Sam is named for Samhain, which is pronounced Sowin, or Soween. (Its the holiday Rhonda describes jist before saying I like your eye patch)
Its Gaelic, but when the romans came over, they made an absolute mess of the letters, so almost nothing sounds like it's spelled.
That Gravity Falls monster is a loving homage to spirited away, A LOVING HOMAGE!. This movie is an excellent Halloween watch, anthology films are great for Halloween
I’ve been waiting on this one, happy Halloween to you and your kin Doug
Thing I love most about Trick R Treat is that it is a movie that is actually about Halloween. Although there is Halloween, it's just about a masked man going on a killing spree which can happen anytime of the year. Trick R Treat is actually about the holiday Halloween and its traditions and history and how people of different age groups celebrate it. Cannot wait to see more of Halloween's explored in Trick R Treat 2; Michael Dougherty said a sequel is in progress and is just waiting to get the green light to start.
Does this film even need a sequel?
2007 was a 🔥year for movies.
Trick 'r Treat is a classic Halloween movie and definitely one of my favorites, also Nostalgia Critic was right Brett Kelly (Charlie) and Thurman Merman (Bad Santa) will be 30 years old on October 30th
My friend introduced me to this movie. I love it. Got to see it in theaters last year 🧡.
Oh, how I love this movie. It is so fun and then terrifying af in the end.
Ah yes the best horror movie I've ever heard of Trick r Treat
