    Brandon. Thank you so much for your expertise and WILLINGNESS to help others propel to the top. There are too many people in business with the "I got mine you get yours" mentality and this is why it is so crowded at the bottom. I just found your videos last night and have been hooked. you are so informative and in-depth in your teaching. As a new broker myself it is truly helpful and appreciated.

    Good evening Brandon.. I want to start by thanking you for all the amazing content you release, it really hits the hidden parts of the business. I have a question on this video. When doing a quote on a lane, is it the shippers responsibility to inform you if there are any associated fees in that lane. For example lumper fees, loading and unloading fees. If any specific equipment such as tarps etc. If so how do you calculate that to your bill if you are just quoting the the line haul. Or does the customer add this on their own.

      It depends on wheather you need the money faster that what the broker is paying or not. It's best to stat away from them if you can. It ends up being a very high fee for the amount of time they are extending credit, but it's better than having to close your doors because you have no cash.

    • @Ronnie7474
      @Ronnie7474 3 года назад

      There is an art and science to rating shipments. Especially when moving loads transactionally. Most of the time you are quoting the customer before you find a truck. And rating tools are extremely open ended. It will give you a ball park but could go hundreds of dollars in either direction. Which obviously could mean your entire profit margin. Nothing worse than going back to your customer and saying you need more money than what you quoted. And for your bigger customers that you move substantial volume for..sometimes you just have to take the loss and move on.

    If i have a factoring company, will my shipper know that from the very beginning? Or Is it the factoring companies job to deal with the shipper for payment?

    • @jdarov
      @jdarov 3 года назад +9

      Hey pamela!
      I'm not Brandon Scott or anything. I have worked as an owner-operator for 2 years and just started my own brokerage having signed up to Brandon Scott's program. But I thought I'd like to help answer this question
      The factoring company that you sign up for once you sign all the paperwork and contract should send you something called a letter of assignment. You will send this to your customer in your welcome packet which basically says for them to send all of their payments to that factoring companies accounts payable. So yes assuming you send them the welcome packet with your agreement and the letter of assignment they will be aware you are using a factoring company.
      After that you basically "sell" your invoices to them. They will tell you what paperwork they need in order to process the invoice and then send you the money minus the fee, usually the same day or within 24 hours.
      From there they will handle the invoicing and collections from the customer. If you are using a recourse factoring company which most likely will being a new broker then if the customer does not pay them within a certain amount of agreed-upon time you will be on the hook for that money. However most of the time you have to call the factoring company to get your customer approved so generally speaking they won't accept a business that won't pay their bills on time.
      Hope this helps!

    • @foxxxy661
      @foxxxy661 3 года назад +2

      @@jdarov This is a great explanation. In your opinion, is a factoring company needed?

    • @jdarov
      @jdarov 3 года назад +7

      @@foxxxy661 thank you! You are very kind.
      I am more than happy to answer your question just a disclaimer I have been in the industry for 3 years but only been brokering for a couple months. By no means should this be considered expert advice and is merely my thoughtful opinion.
      It largely depends on the amount of money you have to finance your own accounts payable. One of the biggest limiting factors of all brokerages is that in order to offer drivers incentives like Quick pay, you may have to pay them before the customer pays you. For example if you have $10,000 maximum on hand, and the terms of your customer agreement gives them 30 days to pay, then you can only theoretically move $10,000 worth of shipments before you receive payments from the customer (IF they pay, due diligence is important in this industry). This severely limits you on how much you can move early on and when your growing that's not a problem you want to have.
      However you can be clever if you don't want to pay the fees associated with factoring.
      1. You can set terms of payment for customer as 21 days and for carriers as 30 days. That means that by the time the customer pays you then you will have 9 days left to pay the carrier, which is plenty of time. Downsides mean you can't offer a Quickpay or pre trip advance with this option and your days to pay will be greater than 21 on average which some carrier's may not like. However you will never pay any fees, can set your own credit limits and don't have to worry about dealing with bad service from some factoring companies or hidden fees.
      2. You can charge the carrier a fee, like 5%, to use services such as Quickpay so that if you do factor that invoice you can make up some of your money back. This is probably the most common route taken by brokers using a factoring company..
      Sorry this went on for so long. Basically if you have anything less than $50,000 to put into your accounts payable for The Brokerage then factoring is highly advised and recommended. You definitely don't want to be in a situation where you dont pay your carriers as agreed. Trust me as an owner operator word gets around fast in this community.
      Hope this helps!

      I would love the opportunity to work with you, discuss the brokering world and help each other grow and learn from the information we are gathering about this field! As a matter of fact I created my brokering company with the intention of being a training entry level company for anyone interested in learning how to work as a freight broker but don't have the money to invest in creating a company yet at this time. Non exclusive for first 6 months ( you keep your own customers!) And work up from 65% split to 75% split in first year.

    Hi Brandon, do you find that a certain level of capital when starting off is recommended in order to pay carriers? Customers may end up paying invoices after your terms (let’s say 30 days) with the carrier. What is the best way to handle this? I understand there is the surety bond, but wouldn’t it be best to avoid claims? Thank you for your great work.
