That's the _exact_ reason I searched for this video too! And after scanning other comments, it seems many others found the video under similar circumstances. It's really a wonderful song. A true classic. Despite knowing precious little about music theory, I still found Rick Beato's analysis fascinating. For those who're wondering what we're talking about, here's Rick's video: ruclips.net/video/ZnRxTW8GxT8/видео.html
This song is from 1983. I can remember that because I did something to break the trust that my wife had in me in that year. Every time this song played on the radio, I would sing his part and my step-daughter would sing her part. I wanted so much to make it up to my wife but it was not to be. We separated and then a year later I lost her altogether in a tragic twist of fate. To this day I fight back tears every time I listen to this song or Peabo Bryson's song, "If Ever Your in My Arms Again," which is from 1984.
I actually came here before watching the whole thing (basically as soon as I knew the name). I wanted to see what he was working with first. But I can't believe how well all this chaos works in this song.
For the people that came for Rick beato. You should check out other Sergio Mendes compositions. He is a genius at fusing Brazilian song structures into a more accessible and mind-blowing combination
This song plays at my work ALL THE TIME and its one of the only songs that makes me cry every time it plays. I thought it'd be a great addition to my wedding playlist but after reading the lyrics I guess not!
even though I'm just 18 years old, this feels like I'm living in 80's, like i've been living for a long time. I just love listening to old musics, it's my bop :))))
So many breathtakingly beautiful memories attached to this song and era of time. Why don't they music like this anymore? Who's still loving it in 2019?
The 80s had so many emotional songs. The 80s songs that are emotional, make me say: "This is so touching 😔❤." and "Why is this song making me cry? 😢" But they touch my heart and soul.
2018 and this song still brings me to tears. How the hell do you truly make up to the love of your life for letting them go but by the grace of God you two reunited. Lord the memories I have attached to this song. Why in the hell don't they make music like this anymore? My own family and race of people had issues with me loving a Mexican and the funny thing is many of them have been in multiple relationships or remarried and we got 25 strong years under our belts. Some things just were meant to be.
Just watched Rick's video on it a moment ago... I'm definitely gonna troll my wedding band with this song once they ask what's gonna be the first dance xD
I heard this song in my sleep and couldn’t remember who sung it. I went on iTunes and I wasn’t thinking it was Sergio mendes so I googled the words and thank goodness I found it. Love love love #1 fav
This song is definitely a timeless classic of 1983. We played the hell out of it in Air Force basic training in the fall of '83. About halfway thru training when we started getting more "liberties" I, on a whim, grabbed a K-tel album cassette titled "Heartbeat of the 80s", at the Base Exchange (BX) which is like a little department store. That album was the last or only one they had. I also bought a little cassette player/recorder. This song was on there, along with a bunch of other great ones. Everyone in the dorm went crazy over it! Everyone kept borrowing it from me to play in their areas. I think that cassette got damn near worn out! LOL! People especially played this song over and over. Many ran to the BX wanting the album but there weren't anymore! This song and that album really helped a lot of guys by making the later part of basic training more pleasant... great music while doing dorm details or studying. Now, in this day of smart phones, people would laugh... a cassette and tape recorder? How ancient! But at the time that was a big deal! I still have that cassette but never play it anymore (in the day of CDs), but I often laugh when I think of all the hype and excitement it brought in a boot camp dorm all those years ago!
The complexity evokes more emotion in the singing. It is a masterpiece, sad that most of us rock kids couldn’t turn off fast enough. I’m glad you get wiser as you get older.
The time I heard this song, it's amazing so pleasing to your ears, great lyrics, great for both couples.. Its shows emotion, feeling for two people in love.... Thanks for sharing this beautiful songs......
I remember when this song came out. I was 9 in 1983...Knew this song by heart, and drove my mom crazy by singing it. Wish I had another moment to sing it to her
I was born in the 80s but i heard this on the Michelin commercial. But i even had the words wrong I thought it said "gonna try to make up for the tires, i love you so never gonna let u go" 😂😂😂
Casi toda una vida buscando esta bella canción .... simplemente me fascina.. me eriza la piel. Y hoy que es mi cumpleaños la encontré!!! Que gran regalo!!!
This song has some of the strangest _pretty_ chord changes I've ever heard. Even now, after I've dissected it, some of the harmonic leaps make my heart skip a beat like "did that really happen... and not sound like $&*+?" Intro: F#m9 Bm7 | E(add 2) A∆ | D(add 2) E9 | F#(add2) | Where does it feel like this lead-in is headed? B minor perhaps? NOPE. Verse: Gm9 Cm7 | F7 F7/E♭ B♭/D / | E♭69 B♭/D | A♭∆ / E♭/F F∆/G | We landed in E♭, but what's up with those 2nds in the bass? (This will be a recurring theme.) Em9 Am7 | D7 D7/C G/B / | C G/B | C∆/D / / C6/D | And now we try it in C. Wait, weren't we just in F# a few seconds ago? And the harmonic mindfk continues for the entire duration of the song, driving musicians around the world nuts, while the general public has absolutely no idea why. I love this song. (I'll provide the whole chord sheet if anyone wants it.)
I've always loved that!! I miss pop songs with really sophisticated chord changes. Like this song, and things like "After The Love Has Gone" by EWF/Jay Graydon, "Time Will Reveal" by Debarge. Great analysis, I'd love to see your whole chart Scott!

Oh my sweet Jesus, what a powerful song. This song speaks volumes, Sergio sings it with so much compassion and conviction. I cry everytime I hear this timeless and beautiful song, I could slowdance to this over and over again. Sergio thank you for a wonderful and timeless classic from my youth🙏🌹🌹🌹

Sergio Mendes..with an 's' at the end..from exactly thirty-five years ago at a stellar time and a wonderful year. The late spring and the summer of 1983, baby.. :-]
This is a `Boss Song!` The male and female singer interchange works so well in this song and the key changes add the special touch along with the bossa nova beat. Nice , guitar in the bridge too.

I used to play this song every night , after work ( with my eyes closed) . I fell relaxed... Mawala jud akong ka kapoy. I never get tired of listening ....again and again....😐😐😐😐
Greatest composer of all time. Sad to say and hear that nobody or not even one composers nor singers can create this kind of music with perfect lyrics and harmony....so sad...
I love this song! Every time I hear it I think of the Michelin Tire Man. I felt so bad for him in that commercial when he had to say goodbye to a tire. But then I felt better, because he had a new tire to love. Great commercial to a classic song!
Apparently, Beato also had someone scrambling to WIkipedia... he's now mentioned there in the entry for this song :D
Rick Beato showing the complexity of the beautiful, now i never gonna forget and i love him for that. Such a great song!
Thanks, Rick.
I see a lot of people here from Beato. I've got mad respect for this song now!
Amazing chord progression. As complex as it is beautiful.
Thanks Rick Beato for bringing this song out my musical vault. I loved it then, but have a new found appreciation for it after your analysis.

You see pop isn't the problem, its the modern music thats at fault for the quality of songs now

One of those rare duets which the male vocal hits the higher range. The one and only Joe Pizullo. Gotta love these Sergio Mendes classics.
Men are not supposed to hit them high notes. To me it's suspect when they can
they can sing any note as high as they can if they are capable and worthy
The most complex pop song ever.. According to the legendary Music man Rick Beato 😂
Just watched Rick's video on it a moment ago... I'm definitely gonna troll my wedding band with this song once they ask what's gonna be the first dance xD
He just did a more in-depth breakdown of it again today.

They don't make music like this anymore......
That's because suburban brats make up the majority of "musicians" now. They think just owning an expensive guitar makes them brilliant. Um, nope.
