Niko coming out of a Long term Serbian War and his past catching up to him, Johnny Losing members of his Biker family and the leader turning on him out of jealousy, and Luis Keeping his mother out of debt while being a bodyguard to a failing nightclub owner.
Behind every sarcastic sentence he says, there are tears and screams. And when he lets them out in some parts of the game, it hits hard. He always turns things to a dark joke.

The way GTAIV portrays war is so different than the usual “GRAH WAR IS BAD now go take this rocket launcher and kill people for fun” theme most games have; to Niko, war is just war, it’s something thats part of both our nature and a Balkaners nature. The only reason why Niko is still mentally stuck in 1995 isn’t because of the war, but because of the way his friends died out of money and corruption rather than in battle.
Though I never really understood why Niko decided to cover with the house fire story of all things. Knowing how the war was you’d think that it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for fires to erupt because of weapons, accidentally or otherwise. If I had to lie to him I’d say she just died of some illness people her age would’ve been vulnerable to.
I think 4 had much better story telling, even the DLCs. 5 was like a very long head trippy joyride with a more positive outcome (Option C) while 4 was Overly Dramatic, somewhat realistic and just depressing and bittersweet but that made it a masterpiece.
I worked with a Bosnian dude back when i was a nightclub bouncer many years ago and he was telling me about how when he was 7, his dad was an intelligence officer with the Bosnian government and they were both in the car getting the hell out of dodge when the Serbs were running amok. He told me how the long line of traffic gradually came to a stand still and armed men were walking along the line of cars peering in to the windows and asking to see documents. The one that stuck in his mind "looked like Rambo" with an LMG across his chest complete with a red bandana and ammo belt wrapped over his shoulder. His dad told him to hide in the back footwell of the car as the men worked their way down the line of cars. He couldn't see what happened but he heard his dad ordered out of the car and a long burst of gunfire. 7 year old him cowered in that footwell for what he thinks was around 4 hours before he peaked his head up at the window to see his dads bullet riddled body lying by the driver side door. Also the Bosnians were killing their own, so did the Croats and the Albanians in order to frame it allegedly being Serbian attacks, it was also by Bosnian separatist pro western-sympathisers, shelling their own towns, their own people, even when UN special envoy was there, shelling the hospitals, refugee camps, then blame it on the Serbs for alleged war crimes, placed snipers and put bombs rigged throughout Sarajevo center in bread lines where people were receiving rations of food and water etc, blew up lines of civilians waiting in queue. It wasn't until the Finns step in to discredit all of the false pretense of Serbian war crimes, but the West didn't care if it was fabrication, they already had a predetermined outcome and motive to balkanize Yugoslavia and continue expanding NATO even closer to the Russian border.

GTAIV had the perfect balance between drama and comedy. The setting, dialogue and characters really brought a great element of comedy to the game, but Niko truly brought a heavy sentiment into the narrative and made the game so much more than a game about being a hard ass that blows up lots of shit. Feels like Rockstar wanted to give us a more realistic look at the type of person who will do all the insane criminal activity you do in the game while also not just being an utter psycho. Niko is broken, but at heart, he wants to protect the little family he has left.
@@ElSrTetodeep enough if you’ve experienced something like this. Daily troubles are just nothing compared to the moments when you’ve just accepted the possibility of your and your close ones death. And, yeah, spend more time with your folks while you can
Niko is actually the only GTA protagonist with a solid and exceptional backstory and set of values. He is literally not a guy who wakes up a day and decides to commit mass murder for the sake of fun. The only person insane enough to do it is Trevor Philips.
This is why I feel like gta4 was the pinnacle of GTA. The main character was not only a dark humor comedian, a war veteran, and a straight down to earth bad ass dude. Niko's story is possibly one of the top ten best videogame characters of all time. Why? Because he feels like a real person stuck in a tough situation. I wish Rockstar would bring him back but it wouldn't be like catching lightning in a bottle like GTA4 was.
Niko went through it all twice once back then and again in liberty city Niko is one of the gta protagonists I loved and grew up with tbh he’s the best one literally coming from nothing to trying to live the American dream as he says at the end of the game the victory we longed for
It’s a shame much of this dialog is missable just by not going on dates or hanging out with friends, and even what is scripted can be skipped by driving fast enough to start the next cutscene. But when you take the time to actually hear his story, what he has to say about what he has witnessed and seen, you find out he is a man that has truly been through hell and walked out the other side. Not unchanged. Not stronger. But hopeful to alter his life into something it never was, peaceful.
While I love GTA V, GTA IV will always be the GOAT for 2 reasons. The story was untouchable, the emotions involved and the development of character. And the physics, cars that would deform and break.
@only right opinion I agree with the ps2 being the golden era of gta, but the sheer amount of unnecessary time limits makes them hard for me to go back to.
@only right opinion Yeah I agree its a skill issue and I still love them. San Andreas is definitely one of the best games to just mess around and get lost in even it frustrates the hell out of me. But I think IV will always be my favourite.
The sad thing is if you decide to let Kate live as an option for the ending, eventually she will dump Niko just because she can’t handle Nikos dark past, and sadly in real life many women do this to men that served in the service.
what? bruh which screwed up version of gta 4 did you play? I'm not even that fluent in english, but I know for sure that [SPOILERS] she left him because he accepted the deal, and was not willing to leave the crime world. When choosing the revenge ending, Niko and Kate end up together ( kind of ), but unfortunately she gets killed, leaving niko alone in both endings.
Niko Bellic and GTA 4 was such a masterpiece and the only GTA story mode I had the urge to play. The main reason for this is because his actions were justified to a degree, with a believable backstory. He wasn't some hardened criminal or two bit gangster, he was just a man for hire trying to make a living. He was still moral to a degree and only did what he had to do. I believe Rockstar wanted to make this a point as there were at least a couple of missions where there was a morality option, like the mission where you could either kill Playboy X or Dwayne, with the morally incorrect option having obvious benefits. I felt that the morality and backstory for Niko made his actions more believable and justifiable. This isnt to say the other GTA games are bad or anything, there are all god games, its just that GTA 4 has a special place in my heart.
As a child of immigrants I love nikos story, it's unfortunately what a lot of people are going through, you leave your war ridden home in search for a better life just to get sucked back into it
By its very definition War knows neither God nor Borders . It cares not for the future . And the past is nothing to it. The present it makes a mockery of.
Rockstar really did a great job with the carachters, from Niko to Arthur Morgan... they all left you in tears, they become a part of you, they make you see the world diffrent. Rockstar you might not be perfect but you are damn close to being
The only video game that can convey the feeling of pulling over on a rainy city street to have a conversation. The ambience of gta4 was unmatched. With dialogue like this it's a special video game
This is why niko was one of the best gta protagonists, cos he had the best character development. All the gta protagonists did but niko was different, he wasn't an unfeeling psycho or a master criminal, he was a man forced to fight his whole life and who just wanted to find peace.

No game has beaten that other than Red dead redemption 2 with Arthur. RIP Arthur and Niko love you both. Like family
Niko is great, I find myself kind of not liking most of the actual stories in Rockstar games let alone the characters but Niko feels like a real ish person, not something made to entertain you.
I feel like nico was the most realistic person in the GTA series. He really showed what happens after a war, the pain and struggles. But it teaches you to never take things for granted.
Honestly best representation of a war veteran and given the best attention in my opinion. It’s different when you go to war and the war is at home, Niko talks about it a lot and not to show boat or try to look tough but to open the eyes of those that are blessed to not have to go through what he did. He tries to teach everyone around the best he can and if they are worth the try.
GTAIV was a great game for being released in 2008, still got memories from hopping on my ps3 after school, playing and listening to such a great story and having fun.

Something about gta 4 that just brings you home…
GTA IV is the most real GTA title for the writing alone
War is bad. Niko knew it first hand.
No shit
No shit Einstein
War... War never changes.
Woah!
War can, affect a person in ways that should never happen.
Grew up with this game. Got pissed off a lot because of the shitty driving mechanics (motorcycles) but God damn was it a masterpiece

Niko is actually the only GTA protagonist with a solid and exceptional backstory and set of values. He is literally not a guy who wakes up a day and decides to commit mass murder for the sake of fun.

Out of all the characters i love nikos personality
Forever the best GTA protagonist
This is why I feel like gta4 was the pinnacle of GTA. The main character was not only a dark humor comedian, a war veteran, and a straight down to earth bad ass dude. Niko's story is possibly one of the top ten best videogame characters of all time. Why? Because he feels like a real person stuck in a tough situation. I wish Rockstar would bring him back but it wouldn't be like catching lightning in a bottle like GTA4 was.
GTA turning into Saints Row nowadays... if GTA VI will be even any close to IV i will be a happy man.
At this point, I don't want rockstar to bring niko back, in case they end up messing up his character.
And we will never get another story like this again in gta. Gta 4 was the best. Hope this new gta 6 can hold a candle to this.
I don't think rockstar will focus on story mode in gta 6 like gta 4, story will be good but not like 4 rockstar will focus on gta 6 online
Nah. I never skip that conversations. I always read them, because I was curious 😢

Probably the GTA character with the biggest moral compass
While I love GTA V, GTA IV will always be the GOAT for 2 reasons. The story was untouchable, the emotions involved and the development of character. And the physics, cars that would deform and break.
cant believe most people still dont think gta IV is the best in the series
Just that one hidden rally car in the park, is enough to convince any one who played GTA, and the drifting and driving in general was more fun.
I know right it's like people can't have choices
It's also just fun to mess around with the euphoria physics
The sad thing is if you decide to let Kate live as an option for the ending, eventually she will dump Niko just because she can’t handle Nikos dark past, and sadly in real life many women do this to men that served in the service.

When choosing the revenge ending, Niko and Kate end up together ( kind of ), but unfortunately she gets killed, leaving niko alone in both endings.
The new characters of gta 5 were so well written dialog was amazing but Niko's was perfection
Niko is probably the most thoughtful and complex protagonist in any GTA. Everyone else seems superficial in comparison
Gta san andreas is the most iconic, gta 4 is the darkest and relatable, and gta 5 is the good Hollywood gamr
Kate dies: Roman helps you get revenge
Roman dies: Kate dumps you
Wait she does? i didnt do that ending but i thought you would still be able to date her
She didn't dumped him
Tbh, its for the better, she wouldve died next to Niko
What a shame we dont have that rockstar anymore
Man this is why this game is the best in the series.
Even with PTSD niko is still calm except if you started murdering people on your game 💀
Damn that’s fucked up I didn’t know Roman back story was that bad
Niko is on that Red Dead Redemption level of writing
I would stop the car as well just to listen to the conersations.
The were so beautiful
As a child of immigrants I love nikos story, it's unfortunately what a lot of people are going through, you leave your war ridden home in search for a better life just to get sucked back into it
By its very definition War knows neither God nor Borders . It cares not for the future . And the past is nothing to it. The present it makes a mockery of.
Rockstar really did a great job with the carachters, from Niko to Arthur Morgan... they all left you in tears, they become a part of you, they make you see the world diffrent. Rockstar you might not be perfect but you are damn close to being
Best gta hands down
"Actually San Andreas is the best game"-🤓

The only video game that can convey the feeling of pulling over on a rainy city street to have a conversation. The ambience of gta4 was unmatched. With dialogue like this it's a special video game
What a beautiful character.
This game felt so real back then
This is why GTA IV has the darkest aura of all time
This is why niko was one of the best gta protagonists, cos he had the best character development. All the gta protagonists did but niko was different, he wasn't an unfeeling psycho or a master criminal, he was a man forced to fight his whole life and who just wanted to find peace.

Niko is the protagonist who i connected more with, every part of his life was pain and it was like a gift that Roman invited him
