  • "Fenice" leaked over 277 gigabytes of data involving over 2.7 billion records, including social security numbers, on the Breached hacking forum in early August.
This data was allegedly obtained from the company National Public Data, which collects personal information from public records and sells access to this data for use in background checks, investigations and other purposes.
National Public Data is believed to scrape information like names, addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers (SSN) from sources like property records, voter registrations and other publicly available documents. They then compile this into detailed profiles of individuals which they monetize. However, it seems their security practices left a lot to be desired.
The data leaked online contained an astonishing 2.7 billion records in unencrypted plaintext files. To put that number in perspective, that's more data than the entire populations of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada combined. However, it's important to note that a single person would have multiple records included, as it contained all known addresses associated with each individual.
