- This pair of batteries were dropped off this morning to see if they could be brought back. Cleaning was done with just dawn dish soap and a tooth brush. Both packs were cleaned, topped off and reset.

I solder leads to the low cells and use a RC Car hobby charger (HiTec X1 touch) at 1.0A to bring that cell back up to the others.
Then charge the pack to 20.0v on the charger, measure them (the voltage on a week one will be 0.v1 or 0.2v higher), discharge them for a while then check to see if they are out of balance (a week cell will be lower).
When one is more than 0.2 v low after a power drain down then it's too much reduced capacity from the others and that one, or pair, needs to be replaced - ideally with one that's about the same as the one in the first position, like from another that's same age and been used in a similar way.
I have had the best experience so far with the repair of Milwaukee M18 batteries. Out of more than 20 repaired batteries, only one had a faulty pcb board.
thats about the same ratio for me 1 in 20 has a BMS issue that requires a change out
Today I successfully replaced the PCB on the Milwaukee M18/5Ah battery. When I soldered all the contacts and pressed the control button, none of the LEDs lit up? But when I put it in the charger the battery worked like new because the Milwaukee Intelligent Charger unlocked the battery!
good job! Yes that is the standard operation in my experience as well.
Also, thanks for the video. Very insightful and well explained.
Nice Vid, awsome tools!!.
You should give us a shop tour to help us to know more about this. you make it look easy and Im starting in this "battery repairs world" i have some milwaukee no working batteries and im only know the "jumpstart" repair.
the jumpstart method usually does more damage to the cells
i repair batteries as well
some cells just weak, some are bms issue where the bank the end of the terminals don’t get charged properly
i replaced them with bms from aliexpress and they work
What i see are nice tools you have Wiha to Fluke 289
i sold 289 and 5 Fluke 87V Max and kept one to use
I have faith I may be able to bring 2x water damaged batteries back to life,
Thanks
Keep an eye on them while they charge. If they start getting hot and the voltage starts to drop off instead of increase, stop charging those cells are bad.
When you edited the video, did you not notice that your subject was out of frame.
I have a battery that's flashing one bar, I jumped started it with another battery..It came to 2 bars. Then I put it on the charger and the charger lights up green like it's charged. But it's not. Any ideas? I wish I knew someone who could fix it so I'm not just throwing away a battery.
Quick question how can you reset the battery recognition/ID if you dont have a milwaukee charger?
Hey man nice vid. I have an M18 8.0 battery pack that won't pass 2 lights before the charging light turns green. If I were to attempt to perform the same procedure, would it work even if they were in banks of three? If so what device would you recommend off of Amazon to do that? Thanks.
Do you have a multimeter you can measure and find which cells are low? To do this safely you need to monitor if it's taking a charge or not. They do have 4.2v DC power supplies for charging lithium ion batteries. The 8ah batteries are 21700 cells and I have had a lot more issues with them. Dropping off and not holding a charge. I did a video about them in the metabo hpt battery.

Cut the plug off and crimp on some male spades to contact the bus bars to charge the cells
Hello again! Here's a question. Do you know the charging amperage the pcb pushes to charge the cells so fast so the pack is ready to be used in 30 min of sitting on the charger
You can calculate that with Ohms law. If you read the equipment data plate, the rapid charger will supply 6a, while the standard is 3a.
I've got a Milwaukee battery exactly like that with a flashing red light. Some motor oil spilled on it. it got into The oil got around the pack a little but it looked very clean. Even so, I cleaned it out. All five cells are at 3.22 volts and total is 16.2. All the cells are the same 3.22 volts. Can this just mean the battery needs to be charged? First timer here, want to make sure. Thank you.
Yes, if all cells are equal put it on the charger and see if it will charge it. I've seen them charge up on the chargers as low as 15.9v some times
@@Paul-IE-Repairs YES! It worked! Thank you so much. I was SO bummed.
I'm into repairing .rebuilding rechargeable batteries. I still a bit new to it. My question is .If you need to replace the battery BMS. Where do you get them from?
i have seen some knock offs or used ones on ebay for sale, i wound up with a collection of them, but i have only had to replace one, when it had a bad microcontroller, other than that most of the components are replaceable.
Or i can put aftermarket bms or is not possible?
@@FredddH you can buy a generic that slips right in. Why would you get something that doesn't fit with a lot of work. AliExpress, Temu, Alibaba all have generic outer cases and also BMS. I think it's around
$17-19....Everything but the batteries basically...
I started watching your video and I was not able to see which terminals were used to charge, there is a + and - what are the middle terminals for? I forgot my X-ray glasses lol
the nickel plated bar as the bus bars for each bank of cells, you have to measure them with a multimeter set to DC voltage in order to be able to determine which bank is low and needs to be brought up. the middle 3 connections on the pack are for temperature and communications
What is the meter you have sitting on top of your box? The benchtop multimeter? What inexpensive brand would you suggest for this use case, if not this one?
Its a cheap uni-t model, but a basic fluke multi meter or klein will do for stuff like this
We can't see what you're testing! Move the camera down a little man!
Is there a way to reset the BMS without the charger? I see 19V but flashing one red led.
Have you checked all 5 banks to see which one is low, if it's more than .2v or .3v, I've seen them trip the cell imbalance error. There is a reset on the battery management chip, but you need a microscope to see it
My Milwaukee 12amp won't charge, the charger flashes. What's the issue, the battery is new?
Measure the total pack voltage, chances are its too low for the charger to charge
@@Paul-IE-Repairs Thank you for your quick response. If this is the case I'll boost it for a few mins
@@Paul-IE-RepairsI have the same problem and I measured 16. something...... Is that too low?? I wouldn't think so but charger flashes red green and the battery doesn't even show one bar of battery.
Hi, do you know what those terminal Connectors are called?
As far as which banks are positive or negative
Why the F aren't these batteries water-proof? I have to dig into a Hercules 20V 5Ah battery because it barely started raining and I left my tool on my tail-gate. Hopefully the PCB isn't fried (probably is).
they could but they would have to incorporate glycol cooling to keep the batteries cooled. thats what kills li-ion cells is heat, poor cooling and poor thermal management
Has anyone repaired one dropped in salt water? Working on dock and knocked driver with battery in water and could not recover until the next morning due to visibility.
It's probably done for, salt water is very conductive, which is why so many electric vehicles began to combust after the hurricanes
So can I send you batteries for repair?
What size and how many?
@@Paul-IE-Repairs 4. 3 5 Amp, 1 smaller one. All milwaukee.
@@rogerl8488 i can take a look at them do you know how old they are, if you look at the serial numbers on them the first two digits is usually the year.

working on it, as soon as i get some breathing room in my work schedule ill make some better video
