- It's a bird! It's a truck! It's a car! --it's the Chevy El Camino!
Taking cues from the Ford Ranchero, Chevy rolled out the El Camino in 1964. Through it's history, it's died, been reborn, lived as a confused truck car hybrid, grown into a burnout + drag machine muscle car, but all the while it has captured our attention as one of the most unique American cars of all time.

I have a 72 El Camino, it's been my daily driver for over 8 years. Before that, I owned an 86 El Camino, and my first car was a 73 El Camino. These cars are the BEST! Incredibly underrated!
@mike tyson easy to fix and maintain
@Duff's Vids the whole bench slides back as a whole. Unless you swap it out with individual seats
Do you have a mollet?
Hey! I have an '86 also!
I got the '86 El Camino Conquista 305ci, 4bbl
I daily drive an El Camino and I can confirm when I have kids I'm going to leave them.
Hahahah
I too daily drive my mino
Me too. My 87 has 731,000 miles and still going strong.

Same here brother, glad theres a place for us El Camino owners to discuss our family goals
I was in a walmart parking lot eating mcdonalds with my girlfriend and she says "that car is ugly" and I wasn't paying attention so I'm just like "mhm babe" then a few minutes later I saw a beautiful '69 El Camino and I'm like holy fuck that's beautiful and long story short we're not dating anymore.

A 1968-72 El Camino is my absolute dream car. One day I'll have one!!
I also want one chevelles cost way too much
@@Samuel.C428 , here are some fun facts for you to know in your life. The options for the Chevrolet Chevelle also fit perfectly on the Chevrolet El Camino. Moreover, there was also an SS option for the Chevrolet El Camino as well, as my ex-stepfather owned one such vehicle (well, he also had a 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS, but I was talking about the vehicles that were built upon the Chevrolet Chevelle/Malibu platform). Finally, if neither a Chevrolet Chevelle SS or Chevrolet El Camino SS are affordable enough for you, then you can get the highly underrated Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, which was only available from 1970 to 1972, and only 1970 had the same power plant as one of the most powerful forms of the Chevrolet Chevelle in the SS 454 form, or the even more underrated Chevrolet Biscayne, which had all sorts of crazy power options, including access to, as well as full compatibility with, the most powerful engines of the Chevrolet Malibu/Chevelle line, including the same 6.5 liter, and 396 cubic inch, engine that powered the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396, the same 7.0 liter, and 427 cubic inch, engine that powered the Chevrolet Chevelle SS COPO 427 and Yenko (Chevrolet) Chevelle L72 427/425 HP, and the same 7.4 liter, and 454 cubic inch, engine that powered the Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 and Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6.
Monte Carlos ain't bad but I think the Biscayne is really underrated I haven't even heard of it.and if I get an el Camino with the L's 454 ,then I'm gonna buy a chevelle body and restore it.anyway you know Chevy muscle cars better than me.great job!
You will i own 2. A 69 and 66, im 28 yoa
Best years of design in all GM products.
*_EXTRA ELKY FACTS:_*
-GMC made a sister car called the Sprint, later called the Caballero. The "SS" equivalent was the "Sprint SP" and the Black/Royal Knight equivalent was the "Caballero Diablo."
-Choo-Choo Customs Inc., of Chattanooga, Tennessee made their own "El Camino SS" package from '83 to '87 by giving the Elco the aerodynamic front fascia of the Monte Carlo SS, a medium length bolt-on cowl induction hood scoop, and in many cases special side skirts.
-In 2008, Pontiac released for public viewing what they called the "G8 ST" (ST meaning Sport Truck) based on the Holden Ute. It was slated for a 2010 model year release, but was halted due to budget cuts and the eventual death of Pontiac. This would have been GM's first U.S.-sold utility coupe since the El Camino's retirement in 1987 (with the death of the G-body platform) and it could have meant the possible return of the El Camino.

Sketchy oh yeah, I live in Chattanooga but I've never even seen one
Every once in a while an owner will pop up on GBodyForum. In my opinion, they look fantastic.
Pontiac actually made a test car based on the el Camino and its somewhere in Detroit now I believe
My stepfather has a GMC Sprint. I believe it's a 77. It was the first car I was allowed to drive as a 16 year old until I got my own car the next year. He's actually restoring it now, after it sat in a barn for 20+ years.
I had a neighbor who owned a 70’ SS El Camino with the 454. His son, my best friend often got to borrow it to cruise the town. That car/truck was spectacular to look at. It was no slouch in the 1/4 either. If I remember correctly it would run in the low 13’s.
If I remember correctly, anything back then that stock and ran was less than 15 was considered impressive
My family owned a 73 el Camino as a kid. Sold it around 2000 to my high school janitor, super nice guy. He loved the hell out of it. My dad said there was so much wrong with it that it wasn’t worth fixing and it was parked for most of my life by then. My high school janitor changed the battery and drove it around. Thanks dad! 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah come check out the el Camino on our channel tell us what you think
Went to HS around the same time and our janitor had one as well. Loved driving it on the various sports fields while taking out the trash or fertilizing
Yeah, I knw how you feel. My Dad had the money. But, he didn't help me to pay for any repairs. He would put me down. Discourage me from even putting a wrench to it. Thanks Dad, for ruining my self esteem and confidence.
I know nothing about cars. I've never raced a car. I don't own one and I don't think I will for a while (I live in NYC). Despite all of this, I cannot get enough of this video series. The enthusiasm is fucking infectious. Keep 'em coming.
Glad to be of service

@Art Lira, my ex-stepfather had a 1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS (it may have been a 1968 Chevrolet El Camino SS, but I could not tell at the time), but it was black and it was horribly besieged by rust, but he was too poor/lazy/drunk/stupid/drugged up to ever properly fix it, or his 1955 Chevrolet Apache, 1967 Chevrolet C-10, 1968 GMC C/K 1500 Longhorn, 1972 Chevrolet Nova SS, or his 1964 Dodge Polara Max Wedge for that matter. My sisters also owned some sweet rides, as did my mother, in their cases, a 1975 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a 1976 Chevrolet Camaro, and a 1978 Plymouth Volare (coupe version, the trim that was below the Road Runner trim) for the oldest sister, a 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 and a 2005 Nissan 350 Z for the younger sister, and a 1967 Ford Bronco (before I was born), 1967 Chevrolet Malibu station wagon/estate car/shooting brake (I think, and also before I was born), a 1976 Chevrolet Caprice Estate station wagon/estate car/shooting brake, a 1978 Datsun 510/Datsun 1300/Datsun 1500/Datsun 1600/Datsun Bluebird/Nissan Bluebird station wagon/estate car/shooting brake, a 1980 Volvo 260 Estate station wagon/estate car/shooting brake, a 1977 AMC Concorde (which is essentially a four door version of the underrated 1970-1977 AMC Hornet), and a 1980 Dodge Aspen (sedan/saloon version) was what my mother owned, respectively. A neighbor of mine in the middle 1990s had a 1972 Ford Ranchero GT.

My dad owned and still owns an 83 SS El Camino. That was an awesome car to grow up with. We towed a 26ft camper with it, dad took the glass off the back and put a camper shell on it for long road trips so the kids could relax in the bed of the truck, it toasted every mustang, camaro, charger, new or old that tried to beat it from a light. 99bimmer Holden died in the 80’s when they stopped making kingswoods
Chevy still makes an El Camino. Its sold in Australia as a Holden Ute, and you can get one with a 6.2L LS3
i-Spec
It's A *Holden* the Aussies made and invented the UTE the GTO and the G8 and the Chevy SS were based on the Holden Commadores and because Holden is under GM they had to sell the car overseas but it's a rebadged Holden, only thing Chevy is the LS motor other than that the car is full Holden and Aussie, the Maloo is not a Chevy it's a Holden.
in South Africa we have the same thing only its still under the Chevy Brand and its called a Lumina SS. it also comes in sedan form
I guess your right but it's called a Maloo
theres a (Holden SS Ute) which is basically your Chevy SS ute, then theres the performance like the Pontaic G8 which is the Holden HSV Ute called the Maloo
Calling the Maloo a Chevy is like calling an Audi S8 a Lamborghini.
I have a 1978 El Camino. I've had it for over 6 years now, and it's been my daily since. I love that thing!
I have had an 87 for about 11 years and I'm finally getting to start restoring it they are great cars and I fully intend to hold onto mine as long as possible

IAmDennyP gm made that
Nick Buckingham Holden made it. Pontiac reskinned it. Originally it is a HOLDEN Commodore.

Just bought my first classic yesterday. 71 El Camino SS. Excited to learn all about it!!
The El Camino is a strange one but deserves respect as something American and special, a vehicle that is loved by so many different types of characters from the world of car enthusiast.
Chevy would have no problem bringing back the El Camino if Holden was not getting the axe this year. RIP

My first car, in 1987, was a 1969 Chevy El Camino. My dad and I dropped a 350 cu. in. engine in it with a Rochester 4-barrel. Everything was stock...except for the glasspack muffler that made it sounds even more badass than it already was! I won my fair share of races in that car, and many teen girls took rides with me when we cruised the strip in my high school years! Teens today have no idea how fun that was.

I had a 83 but the body was in such bad condition I had to sell it because it was turning into a money pit real fast
That's what happened to my 86 caprice. Loved that cushiony car, but the frame was paper
Same, 2 years back I was 13 looking for an El Camino. Ended up missing a eBay offer for a 78 that was a roller and had it's paint and interior redone. I ended up missing it but then about 15 miles away I found an 82 with a 355 small block and th350 transmission. Ended up getting it for 1300 running and driving. Ended up having no rust but the interior needed to be redone so we ended up doing it in black and are currently saving up to repaint it.
I have a 82 El Camino, my grandparents gave it to me as a graduation gift this year, it’s not in driving state just yet but I plan on fixing it up, it’s gonna be epic when I fix her up, I can’t wait

My first car was a 1979 Royal Knight. It was actually a trim package for the SS. It had the 350/350 tow package and a 10 bolt posi rear. I loved that thing. Drifty too.
I have a 1986 el Camino and it’s nice to hear some praise about the beautiful beasts
When I was in high school the el Camino was my first car. I actually had an 86 GMC Cabellaro which was just an el Camino body with a GMC engine. I freaking loved that car more than anything and would even still be driving it if I wasn’t rear ended. One day I will definitely get a 70’s 454 model el Camino and be back on the road again with those beauty’s. Such a great muscle truck. 😛

Henry Ryan yeah we need it now rip Holden
But I'm an Aussie and I don't want it, I see Commodores day in, day out, I want to learn about interesting cars that I rarely get to see not the most common vehicle on the road.
Quake so people who dont know about our cars can learn about them
You mean like how someone might want to learn about a rare car? If they do the Commodore I'd see it as nothing more than either a little tribute or the beginning of the end for this series, a sign that we're running out of cool and interesting cars. And why the Commodore when there is a more interesting and sportier variant in the Monaro? That would make more sense and be more interesting, how often do you see a Monaro compared to how often you see a Commodore?
well actual i said holdens All of them not just commodore
Going to correct you on the SS, the SS appeared in 1968. Body was same styling as the '69, one difference is the reverse lights were in the bumper in '68 and in the tailgate on '69. My first car was a '68 SS El Camino, I still think it's the BEST looking El Camino ever produced.
Just watched this video and I wish I did sooner. Bough a 84 El Camino as my first car in high school back in 2012. Was the only sophomore who had a car and no license. Still miss that car
I've been binge watching all these episodes the past few days 😂 I love everything about how they are done and you are a funny ass host James. I was hoping there could be a Lexus IS F, GS, RC F and LFA episodes? Gracias
If you observe, you'll know that this is the first proper video where james starts to yell.
El Camino broke his sanity, and brought out his inner loud shouty mental alter ego. Not even surprised :)
Yep... Noted... Found the vid
So James discovered cocaine sometime between this video, and the previous episode
I was really hoping this would have more info on which engines needed tuning, common problems with El Caminos that caused breakdowns, or transmissions that needed upgrades/replacements to stay on the road.
These cars are 30+ years old 🤷🏾♂️ and have been through several owners. Tuning engines? Small block Chevys have all of the information you'd need.
We got a 1966 with shiny black paint with a 396 in it and godDAMN it sounds beautiful. Its got the right amount of v8 rumble, but its not over aggressive, it sounds just like an old school dirt stock car.

I got a 73 Elky SS with a 454 engine, and it of course was somewhat detuned for less emissions, but I hear that all that LS5 big block Chevy needs is a higher lobe cam shaft to give it more horses and more torque. The 1970 El Camino SS had an LS6 big block and had a cam shaft with higher lobes, which is probably the cam shaft I would want for my 73 LS5 big block, but I don't know that for sure, still researching that. All I can say is that I love that 73 of mine, it's the biggest and heaviest one that Chevy ever built. What a ride!
Back in the early 80's my friend, Rick, had a "68" SS 396 Elc hot rod with an Edelbrock intake, Holley 4 barrel, Hooker headers, glass packs and a 12 bolt pozi rear end. Red with the black vinyl top. Rick later built a "32 roadster with a chevy 427. Rick now owns the John Milner "32 Coup from the movie American Graffiti.

If you can get a two door truck to hold a full sheet of drywall or plywood, and then make it a car, there's a frickin' market for this, Chevy/Ford! Think about it, lower ground height and smoother areo, with fuel efficient engines, can be dreams of the jobsites again.
