the volume.... is so damn low on this video
Thanks for all your amazing Reviews. You are to cycling gear what I am to Gold! You're the go to guy. Hey just curious, if you had the choice between the 820 or the Bolt, which would you select? Could you share that with me?
Hi Ray, apologies if you have covered this elsewhere, but myself and many others are experiencing serious and frustrating screen lockouts on this unit. Have you experienced that - the touch screen not responding? The latest firmware is meant to address that, but my tests are inconclusive so far. Any info/insights you have would be appreciated.
Thorough review for sure. Volume was fine for me. Thanks
Can you - while out an about - select some specific destination (e.g. stored "home") and route and navigate to it?
This may be a silly question, but can you use these bike gps units for backpacking as well? Trying to not buy 2 separate gps units for my different activities.
what Giant bike is that? I live in Taiwan and that paint job is ...I don't know..never seen it.
It's the Defy2. Standard paint job as far as I know (I just bought it at a local bike shop a few years back).
I've been doing a little comparison research on high-end Garmins, and this video has the most succinct comparison of the similarities and differences between the software and hardware of the 820 and 1000. Thanks!
Awesome review thanks mate as that answered all my questions regrading upgrading from the 520 which I have found very basic and restrictive in its mapping capabilities to the 820.
Hi. I have an Edge 820 and a SRM crank based power metre. i am getting a power reading of 20 ish watts less reading on my 820 to the latest garmin power metre and no setting to alert to crank length. do you have any idea why my 820 shows a different reading to the above and to any based wind trainers on Trainer Road and Zwift ?
Great job with your review, thanks
Need to buy a new GPS computer and I cannot decide between the Garmin Edge 820 and the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. At the same price point, pretending to use it almost entirely in Road cycling which one would you recomend? As well, is the 820´s screen so bad as what I´ve hear of? Thanks!!
Depends mostly on the screen I think. Do you want coloured or black-white? For the rest, they are both quite good.
Fantastic video! Thank you for putting this together.
How do you check battery life on 820 when riding?
would you replace a 800 with the 820?
Do you happen to know if it's possible to recharge the 820 while using it? Still own the old Edge 500 and think of updating to a newer device but only if it's possible to recharge on the fly on longer rides or brevets.
Yup, it works!
I'm currently using the Edge 500 that can store information for 3 bikes, does anyone know if the Edge 820 can do the same?
yes, and no. You can change the name of the activities to your bike. That is what I did. So, instead of having "train", "indoor", and "race", I have my bike names in there. Then you can set each activity up to use what you need for each bike/trainer.
I got a 510 then 810 for the maps. To be honest Garmin's software has been terrible. Complaints include everything from not connecting to my (any) P.C's, phones. Starting up in a diagnostic mode & not leaving it. Crashing mid way through a 150km cycle (+ then having to join 2 cycles together in notepad). The beeps it makes are so 1980's and ugly. Garmin software on P.C is also ugly and totally user unfriendly. Thank god for Strava. The list goes on and on. Not much to like but I hope the 820 fixes the shortcoming of the 810. A comparison of the 520 isn't worth it. Sure there are some nice features but you have to KNOW the real hardship you will face with Garmin Edge products. Of course I will probably get a 820 at some point but they really need to fix the basics. www.strava.com/athletes/2027070
A) If you're getting crashes on your Edge, it's almost 100% likely because of some minor corruption. That's usually pretty easily fixed by either hard resetting the unit, or plugging it into a computer and letting it do a scan disk.
B) For the Edge 820, you really never need to use a PC for anything.
I have spent so much time on Garmin forums getting a fix for one problem or another. Hard resets wouldn't fix the issue quickly (if only). Also I have to hold down the lap button when plugging into a PC to get it recognized (+ to charge quicker), something fundamentally wrong there. I hope these problems are all fixed with the new 820 ! Great Review BTW !!
I used both 520 and 820 and never had any issues either connecting , syncing , etc. You either have a defective unit or something else external to the device is wrong (phone, pc , whatever)
is the battery of garmin 820 replacable?
hey @DC Rainmaker... on that ride screen where time, speed, distance, time of day, calories is shown ... where can we find the heart rate screen . i want to buy the bundle. thanks
Not wild about touch screen on the 820. The 520 buttons worked really well with thick gloves and when you're tired and can't finesse a touch screen (race type situation) I do like the navi features. Good iniital review Thanks!
You can luckily still use the physical buttons for key things (or if you really want, an Edge remote). The challenge with maps is that without a touch screen it's super cumbersome to zoom/pan around a map.
Well, 820's touchscreen is unusable for zooming panning anyway.
Perfect for riding dirt roads
Is it possible to take waypoints as a GPX-file from GPSIES, import them and let the 820 navigate between them? And even take a shortcut and the 820 recalculates the route to the next waypoint?
Only thing not included in your video, on this 820, is how to check the weather, and Smart Notifications. So far I have only found a video on how to do it, using the Edge 1000(same process). Thanks for the video though, showed me a lot, that the (worthless) manual doesn't.
Oh they will sting us in England with the price...
Hi thanks for the review. Here in Australia the 820 now cost more then the 1000. 599AUD vs 499AUD which do you think is the best device for the price? Whats the difference in processing power and speed between the two devices? Does the battery on the 820 last longer then the 1000? What is the speed in navigation using the two devices like rerouting and initial mapping speed? I have a Giant with all the ANT sensors will these devices work well with my sensors or do you recommend to buy the full packages with the new sensors and heart monitor? The two packages cost 749AUD for the 820 bundle and 615AUD for the 1000 bundle. I never used any of these GPS so I have not idea on which one to buy. Your thoughts would be helpful in making a decision and I think may help many others that comes for just this reason. Thank you!
I have an older 1000, looking for something new to use on the great divide mountain bike race. Basically I would like to be able to load my ride to garmin connect via smart phone. And load the course map onto the unit. But my favorite thing about my 1000 is that my ride automatically sync when I get home via wifi.
Battery life if key though. Need to have long battery life. Any recommendations? 820, 820 explore, or maybe touring??
Do you know if is possible share the 820 with other people? 1 Garmin 2 people?
hi there , great video . Im currently using Edge 810 , do you think its worth upgrading to Edge 820 ? if so, do u think I should go for 1000 or 820 ? thanks ..
Great job u clearly know ur garmin! I love my 820. I never use maps I would use my iPhone over maps on garmin if needed.
Hi DC rainmaker, i have a problem with my 820. I can not put the openstreetmap on it. I have tried 4 times but it never works. Do you know a solution?
Watching this video again I would rather spend 100 more and have the new features of mapping. One of the main reasons for me to buy a Garmin is to go on new courses I've never been and stop doing the same old routes.
How does it compare with the Edge 810?
Is the extra cost for 820 worth it compared to the 810?
Does the 810 recalculate your route as well?
Hi,
I've already used with GPS? What do you think of the battery?
attuali I have the 520 and the maximum battery following the gps is 6 hours
thanks in advance for your answer
Just the viewable part of the screen on the 1000 looks to be the same size as the entire 820!
This was very helpful...particularly once you got to the comparison with the 520. I have not used any similar unit and was looking for info on the mapping. I travel a good bit in maybe 6-8 states and ride whenever the opportunity arises, so mapping and directions are of interest in unfamiliar locations. What maps are pre-loaded on the 820? And what's the procedure or how technical is getting maps into the 520? BTW, the volume on your video was a bit low to me as well, but still VERY helpful. Thanks
Great review. New fan! Loved the comparisons with 520. For me i like the 820 for nav & mostly battery save mode. Question pls. Any idea of it works with non garmin HR monitors?
Excellent demo and comparison! You answered almost all of my questions about these units (I currently use a damaged Edge 705 and in the market for the next big thing). One question, How does the map rendering speed compare between the 820 and the 1000?
Works great when it works, which is infrequent. Continuously forgets the pairing with my phone, with the Varia, with the D-fly on the Di2 and with the Duotrap. Still a work in progress.
do you know if the Garmin Edge 820 auto calculator for VO2 is accurate? Also have you used the auto calculator for heart rate or power zones? And if so what’s your take on these features
i have 520 and I think i'll stick with a few more years, as far as what I see in this review I don't think upgrade should be necessary, thanks for the review.
Not if you do not need a GPS with turn by turn routing to go and explore new places. I fund very frustrating go to new areas and not to be able to come back to my base. That how your phone can become useful but the problem is you cannot drive the bike keeping your phone in your hand so I keep my phone in my backpack and I have to stop once in awhile to re-check where I am going. Extremely annoying especially in heavy traffic and near roundabouts in busy streets where you need to go asap if you don't wanna get killed. If you ride always the same ride and you know your area well, if you do not travel much to other cities or countries with your bike the 520 should be more then fine. For a new buyer definitely I recommend a Garmin with navigation so you can get the best out of your bike. Also the feature that plot a route for you by the distance you want to ride is just phenomenal.
Lt. Nimitz I got lost a few times and my iphone gave me great turn by turn voice directions through bluetooth aftershokz headphone, or if you ask Siri directions it will give you great directions, Android phones have similar apps. Unless Garmin makes a great version of these little devices with super navigation then I would go for it, but I think phones are fantastic for navigation
Cornelius Maximillianus that's how I do it right now. I use my iPhone. But it drains the battery very fast and it's not waterproof. I think the 820 will be my choice.
Get an Arkel handlebar bag for your phone!
was this really quiet compared to other youtube videos for everyone else? even with volume on max it was pretty quiet compared to other videos
I ordered just one...Bey bey Mio 505, welcome Garmin 820 :D
Can you add bike weights and wheel sizes for multiple bikes
It seems to me like the new software stuff on the 820 are things you don't really need.
hi thanks for the review. I've just ordered one can you tell me what the battery life is like using navigation plz.
Looks to have pretty much exactly the same features as the edge 810...
how do I get my contacts added to the 820 edge.
you have to add them on your computer, or on your phone, in Garmin Connect.
Thanks!! Much appreciated info, your reviews have always been the best.
Edge 820 or Wahoo Elemnt? Which one has the real "edge"?
Can the 520 control a trainer to simulate outdoor rides?
Great video as always, good stuffs, when can we get some love for Bryton~ haha keep up the good work my man.
Great review.
Has anyone told you that you sound like Bernie from Sesame Street?
Strrange how the 820 is as much as the 1000 in aus
Merci d'avance
Thanks, nice vídeo.
does it have a "home" setting if you get lost?
Your reviews are 10/10 mate. Keep it up 👍
Great review, thanks Ray
any enhancements with Strava? Garmin 520 was pretty crude. any social network features?
Same-same there as far as I can see.
do you prefer the Edge 1000 or this new edge 820 personally? currently riding with the edge 1000 wondering if i should get this the 820. do you think the new software features (incident, suffer, etc) is a big bonus? lastly, how is the navigation performance compared to the 1000, same? slower? faster and more detailed?
Great reviews as always! look forward to hear your input.
I personally prefer the Edge 820, but purely because I like the smaller size. The additional features are a benefit, but it's really the size for me. System perf seems about the same to me.
Is there a map feature on the 820 that will navigate back to your starting point? So, if you're exploring a new area
egion and you simply want the device to navigate back to your car or wherever you started your ride?
Yup, you can use 'Back to start'.
Hello,
Can you tell us the difference between Edge 820, and Edge 820 Explore?
You can go to Garmin and compare the 2 models.
buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/catalog/product/compareResult.ep?compareProduct=543199&compareProduct=561299
Is the display/interaction really that slow or is it just because of the pre-final version? This looks really annoying.
That's about normal.
Its slow because Garmin use 90's tech. They are cheap ass penny pinching company and it reflects in their products.
you can't put a 3Ghz processor and 700 Mb Ram into these devices so you'll have blazing fast performance because they will die on you after the first hour of training with GPS. Take the best phone with the best battery on the market and start strava , have it with screen on all the time so you read data and see how it dies on you in the first 3-4 hours of training. So before talking out of your ass think a bit on why these devices are meant to be like this. Use your brain.
clockyro smartphone screen is responsible for battery drain like that dum dum
really? who would have though you were so smart. And how are going to see data in real time on your tracking device without a screen being on all the time smart smart? Or you are one of those that turns off his display on his phone and making his training completely useless? Or just amateur. In which case those live numbers going up and down on the the screen don't matter that much to you if at all.
As said , that 90's (which is not 90's at all but anyway) tech has a reason. Not something hipsters will understand.
Ask NASA why they still used a 12 year old processor into their Orion spacecraft. Stupid scientists what are even doing... when we have a genius right here...
Hi, can answer a few questions please?
-will be 820 good choice for MTB? are pretty bad the map or have detailed trails?
-will be possible use it in trail running or Mountain activities? have track back? or what main differences in this aspect have with Fenix for example?
- can you download a wikiloc track and then have turn by turn navigation and alerts or just creating courses?
-As i know you can pair with cellphone and have strava PR on the segments in live, true?
-is possible during the activity have VO2 information or just when you finish the activity? its acurate?
-last one, can you use turn by turn navigation in the car to arrive to the start of a track?
thanks so much again!
Gabriel Marias I'd also love to have the answers to your questions. If you find out let me know.
Nice video, tnx.
The bike from video, Giant Defy Composite 2 (2014), is it yours or did you get it for evaluating Edge 820?
It's mine. Bought it two years ago while on a trip to Interbike. I got a sweet deal on it from a local bike shop in Vegas where it had been a rental all summer.
... great info.. thanks!
How fast does this guy want to talk Ridicules!!! this could have been a great review however this guy is talking at a 100 miles an hour !
Thanks for the quick reply. Another question I had was how was the battery life between the two, did either out do the other or the same? I know you havent tested it extensively but your first impression? I've had the 1000 for maybe a month now and I am not too impressed with its battery life. maybe 4 rides and ive had to charge. :(
I might need to switch to the 820 for that battery saver feature.
I haven't had a chance to try and kill the battery yet. It's on tap for the next few days.
Great review as always!
Time to get with the metric system Ray.
is there any videos about this device operation with ant+FEC trainer?
Not yet, but it's on my list for tomorrow to shoot!
Do you have any tutorials on loading maps to the Edge 820 ?
Yup, here: www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/download-garmin-705800810.html
Great review!
Hi mate. Whats your preference between this 820 and the wahoo elemnt (or bolt)? Id lve to know. Both great reviews but im torn. Cheers
I've read and listened to many reviews about all Edge models. I miss one thing in all reviews: How fracture-/break-proof are the cases and screens of all Edge Models. I can drop my Garmin Montana from 3 Meters without causing any damage to case and screen. What about the Edges? They look very much like cellular phones now but cellular phones are not fracture-proof at all.
I drop the crap out of mine, and have yet to brake it. I had one fall off at 25MPH on cobblestones (a 3rd party mount broke), and it only has a tiny dig on the upper edge of the rubber portion of the case). And that's after it then slid across the street and hit a curb.
I rarely (ok, never) hear of folks breaking Garmin Edge devices. I'm sure it happens, no doubt, but it happens so rarely that it doesn't even make the fractions of a percent chart.
DC Rainmaker Thank you for the immediate answer. I had exactly the same accident with my Garmin Montana and this is why I wanted to know about it. So, if Edge had speach navigation it would be almost perfect. Have a nice day. Greatings from Switzerland (the little country with the mountains ...)
If this is a gps device why do they sell a speed sensor also?
for indoor training, or some folks like to have a sensor to track speed rather than using GPS, esp where GPS is not so strong/reliable
Awesome video and getting it out early!
Question on the mapping. I heard the 1000 kinda sucked with the included map, and was not too decent. Is the 820 any better from what you have seen?
I'm buying my first cycling specific Garmin and looking between the 520 and the 820. Wanted to see if the 820 is worth the extra dough. Any thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks again! :)
It's actually the same mapset on the Edge 820 as Edge 1000. Which would be really good (whereas the Edge 520/810/etc.. default maps sucked quite badly).
+DC Rainmaker Thank you! It was probably the 810 maps that they were talking about. Glad they finally got a new one out
Hi there, great video and information. I was wondering, can you control a smart trainer with a map from the 520 as you mentioned the 820 can? And does that mean I could download a climbing route for winter training purposes? Thanks again
Yup, exactly. As long as you have an FE-C compatible trainer (ANT+ FE-C), which most smart trainers today support.
+DC Rainmaker thank you very much for your reply and the information.
Are turn by turn directions useless on the 820 like they are on the 520? Thanks for your review.
With the Edge 520 it's not really road aware (it's just overlaynig breadcrumps on what is basically an image of a map). Whereas the Edge 820 (like the 1000/810/705) is aware of roads and actually routes with street names, roads, recalculation, etc...
+DC Rainmaker thanks. sounds like the upgrade for me.
Are there round trip routing on the 820
yes
Thanks for the review. Will this unit talk to my Polar power Bluetooth pedals? Wondering if I should get this or the Polar model.
No, ANT+ only unfortunately. Though, you could upgrade your Polar pedals via Look's planned dual ANT+/BLE upgrade program. I don't know the exact cost off-hand though.
Sorry to bother you but I have been researching what you suggested but I can't find anything. Any information that you could pass on would be awesome. Thank you. Love the sight.
Here ya go: www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/09/antble-pedals-information.html - Check out the end of the comments section, there's some detail from readers that have gotten more information there.
You ride a Giant?
One of a few bikes, yup!
I can get the 1000 and the 820 for the same price. The 820 is smaller and lighter and newer ... What should I do ?
It really depends on size and whether you value the Group Track and Incident Detection features. For me, I prefer the smaller size - but each person is different.
+DC Rainmaker than you for the reply. Do you think the 1000 is more hardware capable , and so will be able to do more I the future ? According your comparison their is nothing the 1000 can do expect take a SD card and change orientation on the map.
I'm getting exact hardware spec details, but I don't anticipate that the Edge 1000 has more capable hardware. While the Edge 1000 can take a micro-SD card, the Edge 820 has 16GB of storage (well, 14.1GB of usable space). Which is above and beyond more than you could ever use. Most apps are a few hundred KB (1/10th of a MB, which is 1/1000ths of a GB).
+DC Rainmaker My performance bundle is still boxed so I'm going to return it within the 28 days. I'm not sure about t he crash thing or the crowd Monitoring but I can't see the 820 letting me down and it's just a more compact unit. Thanks for the advice. If you have any after burners or discover anything I'd be grateful for a shout. Great page 👍
Thanks for the review! I understand maps are easy to get but do you have a video on how to? If I buy it in USA will it have North America already loaded?
Also I wanted to know if you can have a couple data fields (e.g. speed + cadence) added to the Map view?
It seems like once you started comparing the 820 and 1000 you listed off a lot of stuff that the 820 can do that the 1000 can't, so why pay the extra $100 for the Edge 1000 if it does less than the 820?
Matt Bartholomew thats what I thought - strange they are very closely priced (Australia)
Yeah, it seems to make no sense. I have to say I ended up buying the 820 and like it a lot so all around I think it's a lot better than the 1000.
In your opinion are the garmins worth it having on the bike? I was thinking getting another phone just for the maps to place at the front of the bike.
I used to just use my phone but I'm much more a fan of the Garmin. The gps and speed is more accurate, it's nice having the cadence and heart rate for training, it's also really useful to have the Strava Live Segments and Virtual Partner.
i must say i really appreciate that your videos are in 4k. Thanks. Also fantastic video
weird flex but ok
Regarding the mount of the 820 to the handlebar, there are photos of it with the GARMIN name in white and in black. Two different mounts or it has different color on each side? Thanks.
