    I am actually old enough to be your mum, 58 to be exact. I was in my 20's in the 80's when everything was loud and over the top. I will be forever grateful that social media did not exist back then because nobody needs to revisit that time in fashion. It is only in the past few years I have "discovered" my style. That said I think we all have to go through a crazy stage to get there. You very much remind me of my daughters who are about the same age as you. I have fallen in love with the more classic style of dressing lately. I went from a banking career to working in fast fashion for three years in my early 50's. The "rainbow vomit" seemed to suit my crazy personality and I pulled it off. NOW I have purged that and settled into a more classic, neutral almost ageless style. I love denim jeans and linen tops. I too discovered daughters of India during the plandemic and have just one of their dresses. My penance for spending time in fast fashion is to now run an opshop on my days off work in a shoe store. It is a real eyeopener on just how much clothing is discarded from fast fashion stores. I think when we are young and money may be tight is when we just buy what we can afford. You have reached the point of good styling a lot quicker than me but I will admit I had a lot of fun with fashion but I regret the waste that causes

      Ah yes, I remember the '80s. Spent most of twenties in Sydney and fashion definitely was loud. I think a lot of bands and the music of the time had a big influence, especially the more glam rock era. I tried the Buffalo Gal look but felt ridiculous. Tube skirts, ski pants tried 'em all. At 68 I still don't have a set style but definitely don't wear anything that makes me feel silly or uncomfortable. Like yourself, jeans and linen is my go to a lot of the time. I too have volunteered at an op-shop and it's worrying how much fast fashion ends up there, yet it's still being peddled to the masses. I manage to find some good buys from the op-shops, both high end and on the more mass produced side. I think too that it's always worth a look at these places to see what's out there before buying new. We never know what treasure we might find.

    Interesting to think back on old photos of myself and remembering favorite clothing pieces that especially felt like "me." I loved flared pants, ponchos, the whole 70's vibe was my thing and still is. Remembering our favorites over the decades is a really great idea to keep in touch with our real style essence.

    I think I have found the answer to finding your style. I have a bohemian skirt I bought for $2 at the opshop. It is a beautiful cotton skirt with a great print. When I wear it people say to me "that is a really nice skirt". Same with a printed boho dress I own, people compliment the dress. Last week I wore a simple black tank, denim skirt and tan belt. I layered some necklaces and threw on a pair of tan slides, People complemented ME not my clothes. I was told "you look really good today" by people I see all the time. So, as much as I love looking at cool bohemian prints, people don't think they look good on me. So take note of comments you may get from people because it could save you a lot of time and money shopping for the wrong clothes

    Hi Emily, this was fascinating to watch. I am in my 50’s and still trying to pin down my personal style. Unfortunately, the last 15 years have been significantly hampered by my weight gain. I cannot wear clothes I want to wear because they either look awful on my large frame, or are not available in my size. There’s a reason models are thin! And don’t get me started on “plus size” models who only have curves and lumps and bumps in the right places. Anyhow, I love your channel and am still hoping to learn and apply as many tips as possible, in spite of my weight!

    I really feel for young women.
    I can’t recall any confusion with my personal style, before I got into YT and Instagram. I’m born 1969 and I am on a style journey since I’ve survived cancer two times. I wanted to help myself, so I got into YT and Insta, and quickly drowned in it. Now I can’t find my way out, it’s already deeply rooted in my head, that something with all of my clothes is wrong. I quite never feel good, I shop way too much and I think about it all the time.
    For comparison, before that era I’ve spend 40+ years feeling awesome in my clothes, ever since I was a little girl. I’ve always been very conscious about clothes, while never having the littlest doubt in my style. And I know, I’ve had style. I was also „known for my personal style” before all of that.

      Wow thank you for sharing this, it’s such an interesting insight and I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say this before, but I’m almost certain you’re not alone in feeling this way.
      In my video coming out next week I actually talk very briefly about the feeling of “never fully feeling satisfied with my wardrobe” - so I know this feeling well.
      Social media has had such an impact on our lives, maybe this is something else it has impacted- our ability to compare to others.
      Congratulations on beating cancer twice - what an incredible feat. Sending you so much love as I’m sure it’s changed your life despite recovering ❤️‍🩹❤️❤️❤️ x

    I’ve just discovered your channel and am loving it. I moved from London to Melbourne in my early/mid 20s and then from Melbourne to country Victoria in my late 20s. That last move is where I noticed the biggest shift in dressing. I had to tone down my ‘dressiness’ quite a bit because Country Vic is just so casual and not necessarily in a stylish way. I didn’t want to stand out like a sore thumb but I also didn’t want to loose my excitement in getting dressed and feeling good in my clothes. I’m still working on it and try to have pieces that can be dressed up and down using accessories/shoes etc.

    Hi Emily, I enjoyed this video. I’m glad uve made mistakes too. I have a fantasy me wardrobe which keeps rearing it’s ugly head. The truth is I’m happiest in jeans, a tee and trainers, very simple neutral and basic. I dislike florals on me as I’m not blessed with your lovely long legs, hey ho😂 patterns swamp me. I think comfort also plays a big part in how you feel about an outfit…..so why do I keep looking at pointed toe kitten heel boots….look lovely under jeans and with long skirts but the reality is, I don’t do skirts or couldn’t walk far in kitten heels….is this a woman thing, wanting unsuitable items of clothing that actually never get worn. Im still evolving and I’m 58, so your journey ain’t finished yet girl😊

      @EmilyElizabethMay , Ross Simons is nice for traditional. I don't like the cheap looking minimalist jewelry, but I dont like the gaudy cheap stuff either. Statement jewelry is good on some, and I like artisan jewelry as well, and not just the boho pieces, but the modern as well. Taxco jewelry is beautiful as well as native from all over the world. It's just that the minimalist jewelry is so very boring that it doesn't do anything to enhance a person's wardrobe or personality. One last thing, if you're going to wear gold chains, try to buy real gold. It looks better, and it's an investment that actually goes up in value.

    • @EmilyElizabethMay
      @EmilyElizabethMay  3 месяца назад +1

      @@guerralg63 it always amazes me how we all see things so differently, I feel as though minimal, delicate jewellery looks more expensive. It just goes to show how subjective style is! 🥰🩷 nothing wrong with minimal or maximal jewellery in my eyes, as long as the person wearing it loves it!

    • @guerralg63
      @guerralg63 3 месяца назад

      @EmilyElizabethMay that's true. It's always in the eye of the beholder. Unfortunately, with minimalist jewelry, it's almost indistinguishable from the cheap stuff you see at Target and other stores and online discount stores. Also, it just hides and makes very little impression, very forgettable. If you don't wear it, no one will notice, but to each his/her own. So long as the person is happy and feels good in it, that's all that matters 😌

      I agree there are different problems to tackle for both body shapes. But, being someone who has been thin and then curvy for a bit - both body shapes have different challenges. When I was thin, I was constantly trying to balance my wide shoulders with narrow hips (and small breasts). When I was much heavier, certain dresses all of a sudden looked great on me while most of my old style looked horrible and didn't balance well.
      I think its important to find somebody with a similar body shape. Not just thin and curvy, but overall shape and proportion.

    • @txandmt196

      How rude you are. So Emily is “fortunate that [she’s] thin and tall” and you’re a victim because you’re “short and curvy” (what a euphemism). Perhaps you could “put more effort into” losing weight and becoming fit. Then you might “see change” in yourself.
