  • West Bay Kayak Fishing
In this angler vlog, I am kayak fishing lyme bay - launching from seatown beach for easy parking and portage and fishing near West bay, back towards the rocks at Charmouth. Hardly one of the UK's top secret fishing locations, but well worth a look. Flat sea and scorching sunshine all week make it perfect for kayaking, but less perfect for kayak fishing for sea fishing! A small tide and stagnant water causes very few fish to stir. Sea fishing from the kayak presents a number of safety challenges, even on flat sea. As I'm fishing on my own, it makes sense to stick to the coast line, determined to catch a fish on my chosen method, but things don't go my way and I eventually decide to take the risk of heading much, much further out to find some moving water and fish, but a sea mist rolls in.
I am often asked how far out you can go from the beach on a kayak and the answer is not straight forward - it doesn't just depend on the ability, it depends on the tides, wind, swell and equipment that you are using. Although I am a fishing guide and experienced all round angler, I treat every session as a sea fishing lesson and on this occasion, I am reminded that you have to fish the method that works on the day, whether that is lure fly or bait fishing. Kayak fishing for sea bass (or just 'bass' if you live in the UK!) is growing in popularity and there's an increasing number of boats on the water fishing near west bay, but it is far from easy and the safety aspects must not be taken for granted.
If you would like sea fishing lessons or guided kayak fishing trips, please visit the Fishwish website at www.fishwish.co.uk or feel free to contact me for availability of guided kayak fishing 2021 (note: There is currently only one kayak fishing club in the UK and that's the welsh based South West Kayak Anglers who are working hard on producing courses for beginners, so do check their website too if you would like to learn how to sea fish from a kayak). Please support British Sea Fishing by only taking fish that you're going to eat yourself.

Nice vid Charlie. Good to see you're only human with the big snag up! Better to see a nice variation with the tackle and its results, great selection of species there. Btw, we can all lip read you know! 🤣

Great video, loved the tangles. Interesting that there are Tope about. There was a Tope or Smoothie that got away back in 2014 when was fishing Seatown. Great to see the Plaice Magnet on film.

Carperblue Fishing Thanks. Give it a go. The fly fishing isn’t always like that. I was really tried; but rusty and had too many vertical rods and obstructions around me. One thing I’ve learnt is that you can’t try and do everything on the one trip...but it’s nice to have options. If I had stuck to my guns, I expect I would have had those wrasse on fly, but I got too irritated too quickly and stripping lines back is hard work. No idea how those competition guys in reservoirs manage it for 8hrs at a time.

Fishwish i think it was made much tougher having other rods on the yak 👍

Looks like a belting bit sport! Glad it's not just me who has to bleep out swearing in repetitive tangles, and uses budget rods! 😊

You see, more experience means you don't need a dry suit

Thanks for watching. Can tell if you’re being sarcastic or serious, but yes it was one of those rare occasions when the weather and sea conditions didn’t warrant a dry suit.
