The main benefit of running it in a VM is that you can run the supervised version of HA. If it's in Docker, you generally are running the non-supervised version. Supervised version is easier to use in general.

I followed your other video and already have Home Assistant installed and working in a Docker container, but I'd much rather have this method setup and working so I could use Supervisor. My questions are:
    1. How do I uninstall the Docker version/container successfully and completely (so it doesn't interfere with this version/method) before I install Home Assistant using the method illustrated here?
    2. I have the Sonoff Universal Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus Gateway with Antenna plugged into the back of my DS218+ and working fine with the Docker container version installed already, will it keep working if I switch to this VMM version, or is there something else I will also have to do?

      1. You can just delete the container and the folder that's mapped and everything will be deleted.
      2. You'll have to pass the USB through to the virtual machine (it's in the setup option and highlighted in the video).

I haven't ever tried to use those dongles so I can't say for certain, but the VM should just pass them through. If it's two separate ones and one is working and the other isn't, I'd switch them (in the USB ports) and see if it sees the other device. If it is, it's most likely just a USB pass-through issue.

You should invest in a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) for your NAS, and creating static IP addresses is dependent on your router. If you google your specific router brand (and/or ISP provider) and "static IP", you should find your answers

I btry to re-install HA, but same stuff .... I am so tired that i configured a lot of stuff, I tryed to SSH, but it told me that my psw was wrong (I probably forgoted it). I don't know if it's a problem from VMM or HA ... If someone has an idea ? I shearch all over the internet and nothing ... or at least to get my config save ? I don't know where are the VMM files stored ?

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Год назад +1

If you changed the config file in HA, it's almost certainly that. HA doesn't play well with config files that aren't formatted properly and it basically just becomes inaccessible. Not the best option, but if you have any backups, that's your best bet. Also, moving forward, try and take snapshots of the server before making any major changes so you can roll back.

It'll most likely has to be done with firewall rules, though I am not that familiar with SRM. I believe you can configure the VM with a VLAN tag which is what you'll have to use to get it on that VLAN, but in terms of the firewall, you'll have to allow traffic (unless the port is listening on all VLANs and you can just set the tag).

If I previously installed the Docker version and the installed the Supervised Virtual Machine version, can I just delete the Docker folders and uninstall Docker? Quite the run-on sentence😵‍💫

Yes, if you no longer want it there or don't want to use Docker, you can remove it.

Hi. Followed your guide, it works: both on PC and on iOS app BUT only when im on local lan. How do you get access when outside home? I got VPN (with VPN port open/it works great), also, I gave access to virtual machine manager for the user I have created for the VPN + my normal user for Synology. But still not working outside LAN. Any ideas? Thank you for fantastic videos, always to the point.

Very interesting but I'm going to have to put aside ego and ask a very basic question. In step 14 you state, "Navigate to the first IP address in the list and port 8123 to access Home Assistant! ". I've tried to figure out how I navigate to the virtual IP. So my simple question is how?

Do you think the 718+ is a good device for it?
I got some dockers running (adguard, unbound, vaultwarden, watchtower, acme.ch)
And using plex (with hardware acceleration).
I don't want my nas to run slow. My nas has NO problem running those tasks!
I've upgraded the SynologyDS to 16gb RAM. And want to give the HomeAssistant VM 6Gb!
Do you think it will run well? I'm not planning heavy stuff like surveillance. Just some automations for sensors, lights, Shelly's, TVs, Doors, switchbots, plugs, ect.
