Yoaobi is a collaboration between two people, Ikura (singer) and Ayase (the guy). Ayase makes all lyrics and music out of a novel and or a manga, so you can't explore the full experience unless you read the book before listening. This song "Gunjou" was created from a manga called "Blue Period" which is probably only available in Japanese language. One of few exception is the song "Idol" which was made specific to first episode of anime called "Oshinoko", both translated into English. If you have time, I recommend to watch the first episode of "Oshinoko" (1.5hr long) before listening to an english version of "Idol". Also the same song in live performance is available in RUclips.

Your interpretation is correct. I heard this song "Dark Blue" is for the anime in which high school boy became to realize he really likes paiting and determine to submit his work to art competition.
But I think this song depicts how high school age kids. or all age ppl, feel fears, agonies and strugglings for the future.
No matter how you fears. ppl still fully use his/her courages to move forward.
This is good cheer up song for everybody.

    yoasobi's "gunjyou(ultra blue)"
A song inspired by the popular comic "Blue Period" (written by Tsubasa Yamaguchi).
The outline of "Blue Period" is as follows.
    --------------------------------
"Yatora Yaguchi" is a second-year student who enjoys high school life by playing with friends until morning.
Still, the grades are excellent at school. Because He can handle everything smoothly
He couldn't set a goal to live, but he happened to find it in the world of art.
He started drawing with a single picture drawn by his senior student.
Eventually, He will start studying in earnest with the aim of enrolling in the most difficult oil painting department of Tokyo University of the Arts.
He started attending a preparatory school for art school entrance exams from the art department of the school.
It is a story in which he meets students who are full of individuality and moves forward while being inspired.
    --------------------------------
This song has the background as mentioned above.
He wants to immerse himself in painting,
but he is worried and unconfident that his future profession will be unstable.
At the same time, the lyrics often show the conflict of wanting to do what you like.
There are anxieties and conflicts among growing young people.
If you know the background of the song and listen to it again,
you will get a different way of receiving it, which is interesting.

Ah, every time I hear this song I feel nostalgic.
I was a second year high school student when I decided to attend art college.

your interpretation of this song is not wrong, but I think not precisely right. I think this song is more about those dream chasers and less about identity as per looks or personality. this is like a story of people who struggle to make their dreams come true. as it was said in the beggining, "the usual" makes me yawn, like something is missing, the heart feels empty. living a life as normal people does is boring, until we find our true call for ourselves, which is greatness, pursuing a big dream. and the whole song just represented all of the struggle to pursue that dream (in this song, a manga creator). "Continuing on things I like is not always fun", that's the different from ordinary people and a dreamer. Ordinary people will stop and make it just as a hobby because it stressed them out. but a true dreamer will not give up even though it's torturing them, because that's the only thing can make them feel alive.
This song really represent my current stage as a new filmmaker. Everytime I feel like I will not succeeded, I listen to this song to boost myself.
